Of course it's not exactly Sonic the Hedgehog on Megadrive.

But whats the big deal?

There are violent movies, violence all over the internet etc.

I worked (a couple of years back) with guys that played GTA and COD and they were never violent.

It has an age certificate. If you don't want to play it - don't. If you don't want your child to play it - don't let them.

I just can't see why people are so fussed about it?

If anything this fuss gives it more publicity and makes it more attractive. Like banning a film makes you want to see it.

Care enough to start a thread though OP Wink

hardboiledeggsandnuts · 23/09/2013 20:35

Most people who say it should be banned have clearly never even played it, as they say things like "you get points for killing hookers and stealing cars". Those who have played it would know that statement is complete cobblers

Sirzy · 23/09/2013 20:37

I don't like the game but if that is what adults decide to do for entertainment then fine that is their choice.

I will continue to judge anyone who allows a child to play it though

NoComet · 23/09/2013 20:52

I don't give a monkeys what adults play, but I do care, as the parent of two ~teen DD's, what 9-14 year old boys play.

I'd really rather their heads and fantasies were not filled with violent sexist crap, before they have their first girl friend.

JCDenton · 23/09/2013 21:28

It's certainly disproportionate compared to the actual content I reckon half of it is because it's a big 'name' which has been controversial for a while. Little outcry for Saints Row before it went all superhero despite similar content. The other half is because it's a game and new media are scary. I don't mind the criticism goibg around regarding depiction of women which may be justified but there's a lot of crap talked about GTA by people who've never seen it in action.

Methe · 23/09/2013 21:32

It looks exactly the same as the last GTA, which was shit. Dh has got this one and I've been working while he's been playing this evening and it looks boring, sweary, aggressive shit. Good soundtrack though!

If you want to play an amazing game get The Last Of Us by NaughtyDog. Best game of its type I've every played and absolutely beautiful.

YANBU and I wish the dogooders would be quiet about it.

Have you seen the bit where you can go into a strip club and have a dance with a topless dancer though.. 18 rated games were not like this in my day. Maybe the same concepts were there all along but the graphics make it just too realistic IMO. I was schocked.

Other choice bits I've seen after observing about 20mins were the character having sex and also killing someone by stamping on their head multiple times.

I think parents who let their kids play this and watch similar stuff on film and tv are totally irresponsible.

I do agree there has been a lot of hype for it...don't know what the solution is though.

HoldMeCloserTonyDanza · 23/09/2013 22:25

The hype is deliberate - the makers want headlines and opinion pieces and AIBUs about the game's violence and sexism. That is the marketing strategy they have adopted.

I feel sorry for anyone with a 9-14 YO gamer because they will be desperate to play it but honestly the hype will blow past in a couple of weeks and they'll get over it. No big deal.

JCDenton · 23/09/2013 22:32

^ Almost certainly true, you can pick out a moment in each game that's there to shock and adds nothing to the gameplay. Cynical, but effective.
