To be very confused by this man's reaction to being offered something for free?!

At the shop where I work tonight, a man came to the counter to pay for a bottle of Pepsi. They are on a BOGOF at the minute, so as I handed him his change, I said, "Do you want to grab another one of those? They're buy one get one free" He leant right forward over the counter and practically snarled, "I'm sorry, what did you say?" I repeated and he said, "I can read. I saw the sign and I don't want a free one. I want ONE BOTTLE OF FUCKING PEPSI NOT TWO!" and stormed out, flinging me a filthy look!

There were three other customers queuing who all commented on how rude, and downright bloody odd, his reaction was. Seriously, did I deserve that? I don't think I did anything wrong; I wasn't trying to up his spend, or sell him anything! Times like this I hate working in retail!

Obviously he's being a tosser. However, it annoys me when it's BOGOF when I only want one. Either you get two and one goes to waste or you feel cheated. He has no right t be a nob about it though.

jessieagain · 21/09/2013 22:56

He was very rude and horrible.

I can understand why it may annoy people though as sometimes you only want one an you may feel you are overpaying for the one item to subsidise the offer iykwim.

Amy106 · 21/09/2013 22:56

No you certainly didn't deserve that. The man sounds more than a bit strange. Try to forget about him. He isn't worth the time.

80sMum · 21/09/2013 22:56

No YANBU. It costs nothing to be polite! How hard would it have been for him simply to say "no thanks, I'll just take the one bottle."?

How strange! What an unpleasant man! I am always so grateful if I am reminded of a bogof offer. I usually end up scuttling back for another one, while the person on the till is waiting patiently (while the queue gets longer and longer!), and I thank them profusely. Especially if it is useful stuff such as buy 2 t shirts/jumpers and get the third free (whatever size!) like in my favourite clothes shop in Norway. Grin

SirChenjin · 21/09/2013 23:02

He was a twunt. His (correct) reaction should have been "no thank you"

AveryJessup · 21/09/2013 23:06

Sounds like he needs to lighten up...! You're just doing your job so there was no need to be rude.

He would die here in the US, every time you go to pay for something in any mainstream retail chain it's "Are you a member of our [retail chain name] Awards Club?

(No)

Would you like to join? It just takes 10 minutes to sign up and you can get 10% off your first 10 purchases under $15 and 3% off your first 8 purchases over $800!!! Etc etc inane ramblings

(No thanks, I'm fine)

We have an offer on panty liners today - you can get three for the price of two. Would you like me to run and get you another 2 boxes of !!!PANTY LINERS!!! from the shelves??

(No, thanks I'm fine)

And would you like to donate to our Books for Rescue Dogs campaign? 1% of your purchase goes to buy more books for dogs in shelters?

(No, thanks, I'm fine)

Do you need a bag today? Its 10 cents per bag?

Aaaarrrggghhhh!!

It drives me insane when I just want to buy something and get out the door. It still wouldn't excuse being rude to staff though. Everyone has a job to do and I'm sure staff get bored repeating this crap to every single customer as well.

loveliesbleeding1 · 21/09/2013 23:32

Prick. At least everyone in your queue thought he was a twat too.

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 21/09/2013 23:50

Wow, would it have hurt him to say thanks and just take it home? Hmm

JulietBravoJuliet · 21/09/2013 23:57

The thing is, it's a little local shop and I've never, ever been asked to remind people of the offers, as, to be fair, it's costing the shop money. I just like to try and make sure customers get the best deal for their money! Most people are grateful, as they've just not noticed the signs! He was a miserable twunt and there was no need for it. Has my 7yo ds sat next to me as well, so really did not appreciate the language!

He was a twunt.
End of.
And if you work in customer service for more than thirty seconds you will have your fair share of stories of that type and worse... Most of my friends are either in retail or call centre work. Get four of us round a pub table and it's like a competition!

It's horrid when it happens and you do question yourself but in a few weeks time he will be a 'you won't believe this wanker' story and all your friends can laugh at him, and he will still be a sad angry little man who likes to feel big by belittling others. and breathe

Sorry, that turned out to be therapeutic!

Gruntfuttock · 22/09/2013 00:05

What a vile man! You definitely didn't deserve that and I'm sorry that his unhinged and aggressive behaviour upset you, as it would anyone.

ToffeeCaramel · 22/09/2013 00:14

How horrible for you. He sounds vile

SouthernComforts · 22/09/2013 00:35

Arf at books for rescue dogs campaign

JesuslovesmethisIknow · 22/09/2013 00:36

nasty man,ignore him.

skyeskyeskye · 22/09/2013 00:37

that was really rude. I was in Poundland and bought a bottle of 7-up. when I got to the till the girl said, oh these are 2 for £1 so I dashed back and got another. The signs saying BOGOF werent under the 7-up so I hadnt realised. i was grateful for the free bottle of 7-up!

seasalt · 22/09/2013 00:39

He is just horrible. I love when shop staff tell me about a BOGOF that I didn't notice.

PrincessFlirtyPants · 22/09/2013 00:41

He sounds horrible. Don't sate another second thinking about him.

I was a supermarket the other day and I bought a 12 pack of coke and the lady at the cash register pointed out that the 24 pack was on offer and only 50p more. I thought it was lovely of her to say Smile don't change because of one man.

PrincessFlirtyPants · 22/09/2013 00:42

*waste not sate!!

AbiJen · 22/09/2013 00:43

sometimes, people get pissed off with something in their life and need to cut loose. he probably had shitty stuff happen and didn't care enough anymore because you know what, life's shit... and he's in a mood and he just doesn't fucking care, and don't talk to him because you'll get what you deserve....
I can almost bet he regretted behaving like that to you and you really need to think he's going through something and it's not you, it's him.
Smile
It's a very depressing time for lots and lots of people. We're all going through something.

Poverty is on the rise, so is divorce, unemployment and depression.

Chin up, keep smiling! You've got a job, you're healthy and you have friends to keep you smiling Smile

CharityFunDay · 22/09/2013 00:43

YANBU, the man was BVU and in common parlance a right wanker.
