AIBU?

To not get why people hate Dubai so much?

1000 replies

Cutitup · 16/09/2013 22:18

What is there to hate?

I think it's a great place to have a holiday. Great restaurants, great service, fab shopping and spa treatments.

I do understand the problems of domestic and construction staff being exploited but this is not a problem unique to Dubai. I just don't get the vitriol, the 'it has no culture' etc.. I say get out of the bitter farm and play with the hay!

Jesus, you're hard wok
OK it all my fault because I told yo to fuck off. Well really, welcome to the world. you live in a far more correct and sheltered world than I do or ever did. And I think you smelled the blood and went for the prize re google on this thread, only to find people were not too happy with your level of intellectual absolutism.

As I said before, people can not be nice in the real world. But they often are if you give them a chance

Scotland. Now there's a place I would never go. Along with Birmingham.

What a shame- it seems we will never know why poppy thinks it is OK to have businesses in Dubai despite her strong views on the place or what portofinos friend said when she expressed the same views to him/her going to Abu Dhabi as she has to strangers on here about Dubai or where the majority of Dubai haters go on holiday.

Still, it all goes to demonstrate my point throughout this thread- you can like or dislike whatever you choose, but that doesn't give you the right to criticise the choices of others, particularly when you don't actually demonstrate your principles anywhere other than your computer keyboard.

Portofino. You are at perfect liberty to report any of my posts if you believe they are personal attacks.

I think you are mistaking personal attacks with taking issue with individual poster's POV or tone. Which I am not aware is prohibited.

I am more than willing to discuss human rights but I don't accept that Dubai is the only perpertrator, and I don't accept that this can be singled out as the reason not to go if other countries with human rights abuses are exempt from this diktat

No you can't in July to August at all really, but why would you need to when you can do it virtually daily for the other ten months of the year?

Oh, and cote wtf was the point in posting a link to the Workd Bank data when it didn't actually support your quote.

You said GDP per capita in 2012 was $90,000 for Qatar and $169,000 for Monaco, yet neither of those counties had data for 2012 in the link you posted.

Coincidently, in 2011, according to that table, Qatars GDP was also $90,000 but Monaco's was $163,000. Did you actually quote 2011 figures (and get Monaco's wrong) or did you actually use data from somewhere else?

Might i suggest that if you are going to try and shove data down people's throats and you provide a link to the place it was sourced from, you at least use a link which supports your quotes.

It just seems that no-one can actually say that the reasons for not liking Dubai put forward aren't valid, so only responses are:

You're a hypocrite
It's bad elsewhere
You don't know what you're talking about

Then repeat and go round in circles for days.

Bear, just give it up.

The whole thread is bored to tears in the time it took you to get it through your head that 160>90. You seem to have got it now, though. Congratulations.

Did anyone expect people to react favourably to the charge that they were efffectively morally and ethically bankrupt if they went to Dubai? Did you expect that we would say, "oh goodness, I did not know. Thank you for enlightening me. I must mend my ways at once. But please, first, allow me to explain myself to you as you have requested".

It is entirely relevant to discuss what action one should take to tackling human rights abuses. Saying that it is reprehensible to go to a country that has human rights abuses is fine if you apply that to all such countries. But the result of this is that you can only reside within Europe and the Anglosphere, and even within that group there are significant exceptions. I reject this curfew but if someone wishes to adopt this ethical stance, then that is their decision. And there is no need to get al huffy about it.

But throughout this thread I have not been able to rid myself of the sneaking suspicion that the main reason that people don't like Dubai or wouldn't go is that they think it's a bit, well, common. Which is probably true.

As I've said, bonkers thread.

"sneaking suspicion that the main reason that people don't like Dubai or wouldn't go is that they think it's a bit, well, common"

How odd. You seem to worry more about being perceived as "common" than about your lack of rights, the slaves you own under your employ, and the villagers with pitchforks who surround your gated community.

Really cote I am better qualified to know if 90 is smaller than 160 than you are.

Funny how you haven't actually addressed the fact that your quotes appear to be incorrect, as you have been so quick to jump down my throat at every opportunity, and that, on the face of it my initial comment, that your quote was so last year, may actually have been true even by your standard of requiring a full years data, if you actually quoted 2011 data (and got part of that wrong).

I can totally understand the reasons people do want to go there. There have been some quite fair posts by people who live there, explain their reasons and demonstrate an understanding of the issues. That's quite fair enough. Many posters though have just tried to derail the discussion by trying to discredit individuals rather than discuss the issues at all.

starwarslegoboy · 28/09/2013 09:03

Challenge the setting of individual poster's agendas, yes. Or should I just do as I'm told?

I think when people make references to things that can be discredited, it is entirely relevant to the dicussion to point that out, particularly when it is done it such a condescending and patronising manner.

Re Poole. I did live there in a nasty house in a horrid street called Shaftesbury Road. I was doing some bank community nursing t the time, Canford Heath and Turlin Moor were delightful. The kids were lovely, so gentle and polite. Poole should have a dome placed over it and the people moved to another country or better, planet.
