AIBU?

To not get why people hate Dubai so much?

1000 replies

Cutitup · 16/09/2013 22:18

What is there to hate?

I think it's a great place to have a holiday. Great restaurants, great service, fab shopping and spa treatments.

I do understand the problems of domestic and construction staff being exploited but this is not a problem unique to Dubai. I just don't get the vitriol, the 'it has no culture' etc.. I say get out of the bitter farm and play with the hay!

I would rather be in a poor country with all my realfriends and family than stuck in a boiling hot desert with only a maid for company

it's too hot ...Shock

Yet you still haven't answered my question asking if you could explain how you can have such strong negative thoughts on a place you are financially benefitting from, poppy?

BlingBang · 27/09/2013 20:57

I Had amazing friends when I was an expat, I really miss them. My maid was great company actually, a real hoot - I miss her too (and not because I clean my own loos now).

Ach well, starwarslegoboy - you lost me when you posted;

" Large numbers of Indian workers aside the workers are generally well cared for."

Thank you for wishing all the best to me. Likewise. Who knows, perhaps outwith the unwieldy thing that is the is the internet forum maybe we might have got on better.

I think I have been pretty cool with your personal attacks and telling me to fuck off and all so, well, see you around perhaps.

Ooh I'm scared Grin

"Statistics can be interpreted in a multitude of ways and there are many definitions of things like 'the richest country'"

No there aren't. The measure for "richest country" is GDP per capita. It is not "who has the most maids" Smile

"Please tell me what qualifies you to decree that your interpretation is correct?"

This is no interpretation, you... oh lovely smart person Grin

But if you really need to know... An MBA focused on Fin and Econ and a career in financial analysis (mainly in emerging markets) and fund management. Some of us have actually studied this stuff, you know.

This was fun while it lasted, Bear. Let's do it again sometime. Smile

Dh has just got back from a few days in Dubai on a work trip. He was flummoxed. Sent me a text from a shopping mall saying there was a Boots and a WH Smith and a Clinton Cards. The body guard of the celeb he was filming told him he owns a Ferrari Spider, whatever that means.

The people he was staying with were encouraging us all (me and the dc included) to go out for a longer stay and enjoy the sun and the swimming pools.

I can honestly say I would NEVER be tempted to do this. There must be 200 countries I would sooner visit.

I wasn't trying to scare you and I think I can top trumps your MBA cote but I can't be arsed to try.

One thing I will never beat you on is your ability to patronise others to a staggeringly high level.

Actually, I will also never beat your twattish use of smileys either.

Whatever, Bear.

Next time, when someone shows you that you were wrong, accept it with grace.

Hope that helps Smile

I have just re-read the last few posts on this thread and am actually embarrassed by my part in it.

Different people have different opinions.

I believe that unless you are beyond reproach, you should keep your opinions to yourself, but descending to this level of bickering is insane, and I include myself in that.

Beach

You must be a very odd Scot if you are so offended by being told to fuck off in an debate.

Ach indeed

Ha ha ha

Bonkers thread

And to answer this question seriously;

As a Scot, will you be voting on devolution, even though it won't affect you as you don't live there? Somehow I get the impression that if you can, you will?

The vote isn't on devolution - we have that already. It is on independence.

Well, it will affect me, and it will affect my children. It will affect pretty well all my family and most of the people I hold dear. I would also prefer to live in Scotland than where I am now and therefore what happens in this referendum matters to me and could influence me WRT where I decide to live. I don't think I am eligible to vote however.

It is so bonkers starwars, it's the perfect example of a situation where no one is 100% right.

starwarslegoboy, in my culture, 'fuck off' is either an expression of incredulity, or, a come aheid...

Report
giveitago · 27/09/2013 21:22

Just not interested in the place. Who cares.

The only people I have met who are jumping in the air to go there are people who have never travelled before.

starwarslegoboy · 27/09/2013 21:33

No it's not, it means many thing,, I'm a Scot too. And being told to fuck off is generally not offensive in a political debate.
Or are you from Morningside?

Report
Beachcomber · 27/09/2013 21:46

Or are you from Morningside?

PMSL.

'Fuck off' actually said to a person is to be used with caution where I'm from. (Or obvious incredulity as posted before.)

It sort of depends on the intonation what happens from then on.

Am feeling homesick now.

Report
starwarslegoboy · 27/09/2013 22:08

Ok. I reckon it means more things where I come from than where you come from

Likewise 'cunt'. I do enjoy well crafted and skilled use of the word, but I can appreciate it's not for everyone

Again, best

Um, no BlingBang.

Have had enough of this personal crap now . Was just saying that 'fuck off' is not said entirely lightly where I'm from. That's all. It's not a guessing game.

Well, you know, starwarslegoboy, Scotland aside and all - telling someone to fuck off isn't very nice.

I kind of ignored it when you did it to me on this thread, but your insistence that I should take is, as a good Scot, is fucking me off now.

Again, cultural perhaps.

Been. busy today. Seems like we are still ignoring the human rights issues in favour of personal attacks. Nice.
