To not get why people hate Dubai so much?

1000 replies

Cutitup · 16/09/2013 22:18

What is there to hate?

I think it's a great place to have a holiday. Great restaurants, great service, fab shopping and spa treatments.

I do understand the problems of domestic and construction staff being exploited but this is not a problem unique to Dubai. I just don't get the vitriol, the 'it has no culture' etc.. I say get out of the bitter farm and play with the hay!

OP posts:
Bearbehind · 27/09/2013 16:01

poppy please can you explain how your thoughts on Dubai make it unacceptable to live there but perfectly acceptable to benefit from the income of your businesses there?

I fail to see how that makes you anything other than the biggest hypocrite on this thread.

Theodorakiss · 27/09/2013 16:22

Yes diamond, I am lying. Poole is a marvellous place full of jolly nice people.

DiamondMask · 27/09/2013 16:25

It's got me in it. I'm quite jolly even before a drinky Grin And all the neighbours know each other and we have street BBQ's.
Maybe it's because we are festering

BlingBang · 27/09/2013 16:28

I Think Poppy is entitled to not want to live in Dubai, even if she has businesses there. It's the slating of all expats who live in Dubai (as she did when it suited her) that I found strange. They are all crap and immoral and brash execpt her basically.

No one has to like Dubai.

starwarslegoboy · 27/09/2013 16:35

Beachcomber
While I might agree with you for some of your points, it does not negate the fact you have strutted about your soapbox for days now demanding that all expats justify themselves and ask for penance for the sin of living in Dubai. And In a very unpleasant tone too, I might add, so I fail to see why you're getting all huffy when it's given back to you.

I think you forget that you are on an internet forum and 'Dubailovers' do not have to explain themselves to you or anyone else.

It has been akin to those mental breasfeeding debates where Cath from Croydon is catigated and accused of killing millions of African children because she has the temerity to feed her child a carton of Cow & Gate.

CoteDAzur · 27/09/2013 16:35

Bear - I don't have to "give it a whirl" because I know the facts:

GDP per capita (2012) - approximate figures:

Monaco $169,000
Qatar $90,000

I between the two, there is Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, and Norway.

If you don't believe me, check out World Bank figures. Not as fun as that newspaper article you got your info from, but some of us prefer the facts Wink

Bearbehind · 27/09/2013 16:40

But blingblang surely if part of your dislike of a place is the way employees are treated and if, by virtue of having businesses there, you are very likely to have employees there too, how can that possibly not be hypocritical?

I agree that no one has to like Dubai, but liking Dubai as far as it suits someone, then slating everything else, makes them the biggest hypocrite ever IMO.

BlingBang · 27/09/2013 16:42

Ha, ha, have we really reached the dizzy heights of 'My country is richer than your country'!

If someone continues this on a new thread when we hit the limit and going to kill them.

poppydoppy · 27/09/2013 16:44

But blingblang surely if part of your dislike of a place is the way employees are treated and if, by virtue of having businesses there, you are very likely to have employees there too, how can that possibly not be hypocritical?

It depends what you do. I am not willing to share what we do on a public forum.

CoteDAzur · 27/09/2013 16:45

"Yes I lie awake at night thinking about who, per capita is the richest"

Only because you have already decided (erroneously) that you are the richest in the world Grin

CoteDAzur · 27/09/2013 16:51

Bling - This is not about "mine is richer than yours" but about introducing some people who clearly love wealth a little too much to reality.

Like this one:

Theodorakiss Fri 27-Sep-13 15:08:49
Actually sweetie, we ARE the richest country in the world. And proud of it. We also own most of your festering little island

Err, no you are not, love. Sorry to rain on your parade Smile

Beachcomber · 27/09/2013 16:51

Thanks limitedperiodonly.

starwarslegoboy your personal attacks are getting better and better!

Bearbehind · 27/09/2013 16:54

Not that it actually matters cote but that data is soooo last year.

starwarslegoboy · 27/09/2013 16:56

No, it's not but feel free to report me.

CoteDAzur · 27/09/2013 16:57

"Dubailovers' do not have to explain themselves to you or anyone else. "

Funny enough, nobody asked them to. Yet, they can't stop themselves from explaining themselves. The thread title is not asking why Dubai is loved. So why have they been banging on for days about what a lovely place Dubai is and how its critics are laughable jealous hypocrites?

poppydoppy · 27/09/2013 17:00

I wonder if Theodorakiss ever became ill (god forbid) lost her job or something happened in the region would come back to the UK.

A lot of expats hate the UK yet they are happy to use the NHS and send their children to our Unis (home status) despite living out of the UK for 10 years or more.

Dubai and Qatar, will soon be very expensive countries to live in the cost of living is rising but wages are not, school fees and rents are becoming a real problem for the average expat.

CoteDAzur · 27/09/2013 17:01

Economic data has to be "so last year". 2013 isn't over yet and you can't expect its economic data to be available.

Feel free to dream that Qatar will double its GDP per capita to take #1, though. Hope springs eternal Smile

Alternatively, admit that you were wrong. That is an option, you know.

poppydoppy · 27/09/2013 17:04

CoteDAzure, I often wonder why so many uae expats post on here daily when the UAE is such an amazing place to live?

If Dubai has so much to offer why are they ALWAYS posting on a UK site

poppydoppy · 27/09/2013 17:06

Theo, do you know why the Qatari's have been on a world wide shopping spree ?

starwarslegoboy · 27/09/2013 17:08

Cote. You are out of context. Read the thread to understand

CoteDAzur · 27/09/2013 17:09

I don't think so, but thanks for caring.

Bearbehind · 27/09/2013 17:09

cote, I actually couldn't give a shit if I'm wrong or not. that kind of data is always subject to change anyway, hence your quotation of 'approximate figures' and is constantly updated so two thirds of the way through a year, last years data is unreliable too.

Anyway, it's really not the point.

This thread is beyond bonkers now.

Does anyone want to help me fill the last 100 posts with Biscuit?

Bearbehind · 27/09/2013 17:10
Biscuit
CoteDAzur · 27/09/2013 17:15

"I actually couldn't give a shit if I'm wrong or not."

Interesting. Is that because you are intellectually dishonest or because you have no pride?

" that kind of data is always subject to change anyway, hence your quotation of 'approximate figures'"

No it's not, and I said "approximative" because I wrote 169,000 and 90,000 (rounded to thousands).

Let me know if you have trouble understanding this and we can go over how and why 169,000 is greater than 90,000.

starwarslegoboy · 27/09/2013 17:18

Oh, thanks Cote, I do, I really do
