Man v's Food

Fab programme and guaranteed to make me feel hungry, would love to try the pulled pork that seems to be on most of the menus, but I can't believe people buy the calorific heart attack inducing burgers/dogs etc on a day to day basis
Most of the dishes look ok when they're making and then 72 layers of different cheeses are added. He talks about flavours, grease and more grease must actually be the taste.
Is Man v.s food America at it's worst?

Who says they're buying them on a daily basis?

The vast vast majority of diners in the restaurants are nowhere near obese.

CookieLady · 14/09/2013 22:06

Oh God, it's addictive viewing! Some of the dishes look interesting but the portion sizes Shock

CoffeeTea103 · 14/09/2013 22:07

I think he takes on the challenge meals in each restaurant which doesn't reflect the usual portions. However some of the usual portions are also huge. It's enough to put me off.

mrspremise · 14/09/2013 22:07

lol @ 72 different layers of cheese Grin

CookieLady · 14/09/2013 22:08

I agree with Magic. I don't think people would eat those meals day in day out.

RinkyDinkyDoo · 14/09/2013 22:11

The usual portions are enormous and bursting with naughty things, the challenge meals are just redonculous. Some of the people featured say they go there for lunch daily or a few times a week.

Do we have similar places in the Uk ? I'm not sure we do.

Yakky · 14/09/2013 22:14

I shouldn't think most people eat like that every day.
and he himself claims that when he's finished filming a series he has to go on a serious health food kick otherwise he'd be the size of a winnebaygo!

HorryIsUpduffed · 14/09/2013 22:17

There's always a few other people in the caff sharing the monster special.

We prefer the heat challenges. Ah the pain

IEatDates · 14/09/2013 22:17

I make pulled pork all the time.

Im fact, I havent done it in ages. Its DUE!

Love that programme, although I made the mistake of watching on my fast day when doing 5:2.

FreudiansSlipper · 14/09/2013 22:19

i find american food bland and often sweet tasting. there seems to be lots of sugar on sauces, dressings etc and the portions are big, very big

i love the programme, it often puts me off food and i often feel sick watching it but there is something likeable about him

NoelHeadbands · 14/09/2013 22:22

I'd pull his pork

ILetHimKeep20Quid · 14/09/2013 22:28

An Indian restaurant near me was on it once. Perfectly reasonable, normal place but have a killer curry on the menu which is unbearably hot, but you get it for free if you finish it.

Kamchatka · 14/09/2013 22:29

Apparently he makes himself throw up after he eats ALL THE FOOD.
And employs a dietician to keep him half right.

BOF · 14/09/2013 22:30

DP likes it, but I always find the sheer quantities bordering on immoral.

meganorks · 14/09/2013 22:32

Some of it looks great. And the quality of meat and stuff used looks better than you would get in a similar sort of restaurant here. But the cheese looks rank! And normal portion sizes are massive. No good for me - I can't leave food on my plate!

LegoAcupuncture · 14/09/2013 22:35

I would love to try most of the places he does, particularly the BBQ places.

Mmmmmmmmmm pulled pork.

TrollyDolly1 · 14/09/2013 22:45

We went to restaurant featured in the summer. It was in Sarasota. DP and BIL went to do the challenge - it was a hot wings challenge made with amongst other things ghost chillies. They were all set to do it until the the waitress pulled out a waiver form for them to sign! DSister and I stepped in and persuaded them it was a stupid idea. They had a sandwich instead it was enormous, filled with steak, chicken, onion rings, mozerella sticks, onions, mushrooms and 72 flavours of cheese. They were both very quite on the journey home.

Yakky · 14/09/2013 22:54

Why do Americans have such huge portions? Are their Macdonalds larger too?
Why can't they just eat normal human portions instead of being presented with something a bear would struggle with?

Trigglesx · 14/09/2013 23:07

No, McDonalds sizes are the same as here, from what I remember, although there are variations in the menu depending on where you are in the country. For example, the McDonalds in Maine had lobster rolls on the menu. Grin The one in Arizona had a spicy breakfast burrito on their menu.

There are a lot of "all you can eat" places and some places the portion sizes are fairly large, but other places they are just regular portion sizes.

You can't look at that show and say "oh that's the way all restaurants are in America." Man Vs Food is set up to specifically showcase these restaurants with extremely large food portions or huge food challenges.

manicinsomniac · 14/09/2013 23:14

ugh, I've never heard of the programme but, from reading this thread, it sounds like it shouldn't be allowed on the tv! Grin

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 14/09/2013 23:17

OP did you actually use the word redonculous?

I think I luffs you.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 14/09/2013 23:17

italics fail

MichelleRouxJnr · 14/09/2013 23:23

Ooh OP make yourself some pulled pork.
Sooo easy, so delicious.
I use this recipe (at the end of the article):

www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/wordofmouth/2013/jan/31/how-to-cook-perfect-pulled-pork

It was MvsF that made me first try it. I've tried a few recipes but this one, imo, is nicest and easiest.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 14/09/2013 23:23

Man v Food is quite fun to watch but dangerous too because it can make you hungry and normalise the eating of huge greasy portions!

Our other favourite here in the Hearts household is BBQ University. It is classic. The host keeps talking about the "handsome cross-hatching of grill marks" on your piece of meat and so now we can never grill anything without Handsome Cross-Hatching. They have a Grill Cam and will grill anything and everything (mangoes, corn on the cob, prawns, monkfish were on the last episode). We have introduced Skewer Night where we eat everything on skewers. Classic.
