Man v's Food

Fab programme and guaranteed to make me feel hungry, would love to try the pulled pork that seems to be on most of the menus, but I can't believe people buy the calorific heart attack inducing burgers/dogs etc on a day to day basis
Most of the dishes look ok when they're making and then 72 layers of different cheeses are added. He talks about flavours, grease and more grease must actually be the taste.
Is Man v.s food America at it's worst?

they odo man v food nation so some other greedy bugger scoffs it

Grin @throwing a cow

FredFredGeorge · 15/09/2013 15:31

greentshirt That's not correct, McDonalds meals are slightly larger in the US, but it's nothing like the degree you suggest - A US Medium Fries has 380 calories, a UK Large has 500.

The respective medium Big Mac meal with Coke will only give you 130 more calories in the US than in the UK, so yes larger, but not the same as the difference between large and medium in the UK.

mrsjay · 15/09/2013 15:43

so not exactly a huge dinner plate size burger then fred I didnt think they were massive either didnt have to cram everything in , although the drinks seem to be small meduim larger and pail size Grin

sweetestcup · 15/09/2013 15:53

Im in Laguna Beach just now, coming to the end of a Californian holiday driving down from San Francisco and I have been really surprised at the so called normal portions we have been served in restaraunts, diners and fast food places, having expected everything to be huge! Rarely would I say anything has been too big up until last night when we ended up in a burger place that offered unlimited fries!

FredFredGeorge · 15/09/2013 16:00

I actually wonder if the difference in portion size actually has something to do with etiquette, the US never having had rationing and similar so no-one got the "finish everything on their plate" paranoia. So they all stick with the hosts responsibility to provide more than enough food, so it's easier to be polite and leave some, rather than making it easy to finish everything.

SPsTotallyMullerFuckingLicious · 15/09/2013 16:05

I love this show! Always makes me hungry. I wat a huge pizza slice, that's my goal. Go to America and eat a pizza slice the size of me.

ZingWantsCake · 15/09/2013 16:10

the pulled pork made me so hungry, but most of it I just makes me feel sick

hot dog eating competition for example. bleurgh. yet I watched it with morbid fascination

lljkk · 15/09/2013 16:15

lol @ Tee.
Even in the UK I rarely order food if we eat out. Everyone else orders what they want & DH & I hoover up the leftovers (we have huge appetites in general).
Thing about us Americans is that we think of ourselves as having rural farming frontier manual labour origins. So when food was plentiful you ate a lot because you could. And also, we enjoy & embrace prosperity so eating a lot goes with that. I think that's the cultural origins about big meals.

Canadian friend who now lives in my hometown (has done for years now), says that what baffles her is the cost. It's so cheap to eat in and prevents waste, she finds it hard to go along with the culture of eating out large & often.

The first time I saw MVF I just couldn't help thinking about the millions of starving people around the world, wondering how people in very poor countries would feel watching it, and how incredibly, ridiculously, maddeningly unjust the world is. One half starves while the only half binges.

The presenter man is quite likeable, though.

Tuon · 15/09/2013 16:37

I must try the pulled pork recipe. Always makes me drool.

The UK has huge potion sizes too, been to Frankie and bennies recently? Crap food in huge portions, the mushroom and ciabatta bread starter was huge, how anyone could eat a full size pizza after that I don't know.

ZingWantsCake · 15/09/2013 16:39

Tuon do you have a good recipe to make pulled pork?

SmiteYouWithThunderbolts · 15/09/2013 16:39

This. I do love the programme but I battle with that feeling throughout every episode.

Adam Richman is really quite cute though. Something about that twinkle in his eyes..

This ^^ definitely.

I also think like that when I read some of the Christmas threads each year.

But it's the way it is and no amount of thinking about it is going to change it.

OwlinaTree · 15/09/2013 17:01

I do like a bit of Man v Food. I like the fact they go to these tiny unknown towns in the US and tell you about them.

The challenges are epic! I struggle to finish a harvester!

OwlinaTree · 15/09/2013 17:02

You can always support aid charities to assuage your guilt!

Shelter is a good one.

mrsjay · 15/09/2013 17:03

you are right about the gluttony and people starving but it is what it is I suppose,

Renniehorta · 15/09/2013 17:16

We went to the USA on holiday this year. It was self catering so we bought food from supermarkets and also ate out in a number of restaurants and diners. It was the first time since I went to Hungary in 1972 where the food was not a stand out part of the holiday.

Everything was fried, including tuna and lobster and smothered in cheese and salt. Nothing tasted of anything but cheese and salt. Since when was cheese a condiment? It is not even nice cheese. The bread tasted really sweet. That made everything served with bread inedible, fried prawn and coleslaw served between slices of sweet bread! The fruit and veg looked delicious but were invariably tasteless.

It made me pine for food on holiday round the Med. We will have to consider long and hard before we go back.

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 15/09/2013 17:22

I love this programme!

However he always tastes the food and proclaims its the best ever, when it just looks like the same meat and plastic cheese he's eaten in every episode!

alistron1 · 15/09/2013 17:26

I wish we had awesome burger/hot dog places in the UK that they have on MVF. I want a foot long chilli dog more than anything.

BangOn · 15/09/2013 17:34

My feelings about this show are similar to those i had whilst visiting new york - a strange sort of fascination & ambivalence towards the all american spectacle

however the presenter is like a good-looking, apolitical mark thomas. Which always has me a bit Confused

Tuon · 15/09/2013 20:24

I don't Zing at someone posted a recipe up thread. I'm on phone so haven't looked yet but I'll he giving it a go.

ZingWantsCake · 15/09/2013 21:00

tuon thanks, no worries, I was given one since.

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 15/09/2013 21:07

God I love that programme.
There is nothing sexier IMO than a man who is passionate about food. I absolutely adore Giles Coren too!

NettoSuperstar · 15/09/2013 21:13

I love this show, the food looks great.
Adam is a trained Sushi chef too, I really would Grin
I make lots of American food at home, as it's the only way I'll get to try it, and it's delicious.
