Man v's Food

Fab programme and guaranteed to make me feel hungry, would love to try the pulled pork that seems to be on most of the menus, but I can't believe people buy the calorific heart attack inducing burgers/dogs etc on a day to day basis
Most of the dishes look ok when they're making and then 72 layers of different cheeses are added. He talks about flavours, grease and more grease must actually be the taste.
Is Man v.s food America at it's worst?

ILetHim - where is that curry place?? I would take that challenge!!

LeGavrOrf · 15/09/2013 00:14

This is the best programme ever to watch when on a diet. You are so revolted by what he eats that it puts you off raiding the fridge.

LeGavrOrf · 15/09/2013 00:15

Haha at cross hatching grill marks. I am obsessed with getting decent cross hatches on steak when I cook it, my family thinks I am a saddo (they have a point)

MartyrStewart · 15/09/2013 00:18

My local American style Diner does a lot of the dishes featured, and has this playing on a loop in the corner with subtitles. Grin

CoolaSchmoola · 15/09/2013 00:19

Portions in Germany are also mahoosive, and I've seen challenges there that knock the majority of MVF into a cocked hat... Still watch it though, even though I much prefer Diners, Driveins and Dives.

PinkyCheesy · 15/09/2013 01:49

We (DH, 2 DSs and I) did a small US road trip last year to visit some of the MvF restaurants. And each one was AMAZING. Lovely staff, really delicious food, and reasonable prices. They had all done well on the back of being on tv but they didn't seem snooty or pretentious about it and it didn't seem to have affected their regular clientele. Certainly none of the food was greasy/tasteless/full of additives. We did share the 7lb breakfast burrito between us though! I think the programme is a great way of showcasing American towns in a way that you don't usually see, and really making the most of their little home-grown independent eateries.

mrsSOAK · 15/09/2013 08:53

Unfortunatly there is a greasy spoon near where we are that serves a kids breakfast, so called because it weighs the same.
It contains a supersized 8 egg cheese and potato omelette, 2 bacon, 2 sausages, 6 fried eggs, beans, tomatoes, mushrooms, 4 hash browns, 4 black pudding, saute potatoes, 4 toast, 4 bread and butter and 4 fried bread.
Unsurprisingly we are in the area where obesity is increasing and at a faster than average rate.

hermioneweasley · 15/09/2013 09:00

Agree with pink cheesy - I think it showcases the best of American cooking. The Maine lobster last night had me dribbling!

Also asking "why do Americans eat such large portions" is pretty racist. Hard to generalise about a country and a population that size! Some restaurants in America serve larger portions than we are used to in the UK, that would be my observation.

McNewPants2013 · 15/09/2013 09:01

The pub by me does a challenge which i will copy from their website

A flaming feast not for the faint hearted! Our massive burger is packed with:Two flame-grilled 12oz beef burgers, Two breaded chicken breast fillets, Spicy chilli beef, Melted Cheddar cheese, Onions, Crispy bacon, Onion rings & served with a giant helping of chips! Think you can handle the mighty 1kg challenge? Get your name and photo on the Hall of Flame!

I love MvF it always make me hungry.

Alisvolatpropiis · 15/09/2013 09:02

I like the programme, particularly that it's focused on independent restaurants.

Yes the size of challenge meal is ridiculous but that's usually the point unless it's a heat challenge. I do sometimes sit there thinking it's a waste of food and if they can spare it,the restaurant owners could do something more positive with it. But I doubt anyone is choosing the challenge meal on a daily basis.

I've been to America a few times. Portion sizes can be larger, but not as a rule. America has a lot of obese people but then it has a huge population. You're as likely to see an impossibly thin athletic person as you are a very obese one.

mrsjay · 15/09/2013 09:06

whats not to like cheese some grease a bit of chilli or pulled pork topped with cheese Grin

TBH the meals are a gimmick for the place to encourage people in to eat normal portions of food it probably started as an advertising and it just took off,

mrsjay · 15/09/2013 09:07

you all need to watch Diners drive ins and drives, IT has me drooling much more than man v food

Tee2072 · 15/09/2013 09:29

Yes. All people in the United States eat like that every day. It must be true since you saw it on TV. Hmm [eyeroll]

mrsjay · 15/09/2013 09:30

@tee your pet hate has reared its ugly head again Grin

Tee2072 · 15/09/2013 09:33

Yes, Mrsjay. It has. Grin

GillyBillyWilly · 15/09/2013 09:40

Don't think people go to those places every day. Some people might but they must be in a very tiny minority.

Check out the red dog saloon in shoreditch (London).... It's near my office and I've been there twice... It's amazing and they have great food and a couple of challenges that I will never do! DH won't try either Grin

ImATotJeSuisUneTot · 15/09/2013 10:04

There's a place in Scarborough that does mega-challenge meals, nachos, burgers etc.

There was a time I could have eaten them easily - but not now I'm 2+ stone lighter and a complete carb refuser. GrinGrin

Trigglesx · 15/09/2013 15:01

The Maine lobster last night had me dribbling!

My mean old mother was rhapsodising the other day about how she'd just been back from visiting my aunt in DownEast Maine. My aunt's son (my cousin) owns a lobster boat, so she can get fresh lobster pretty much whenever. When I lived there for a few years, we had a lot of lovely fresh lobster dinners at my aunts. Yum yum yum!! Maine lobsters - divine!! Grin

whats4teamum · 15/09/2013 15:16

Guy fieri is much better on diners, drive ins and dives.

Portions are obscene on man vs food.

I have spent a lot of time in USA and portions are massive but it is the norm to take home a doggy bag which is still sneered at in UK.

greentshirt · 15/09/2013 15:17

Macdonalds is larger in the US, their medium meal is our large size, their large is not available here.

mrsjay · 15/09/2013 15:20

I had a normal size Mcdonalds in florida although you do need to watch for the drinks but I didnt find their burgers and fries any huger that here, YY to doggie bags i took some home on occasion

FredFredGeorge · 15/09/2013 15:20

There's places with similar challenges in the UK, e.g. Tuckers Exotic Meat has one with 64oz of steak.

mrsjay · 15/09/2013 15:22

I have seen curry challanges advertised there is a place in Glasgow (i think) that you need to sign a disclaimer for ,

cocolepew · 15/09/2013 15:26

I don't think they make MvF anymore. Man was probably worried about his arteries.

cocolepew · 15/09/2013 15:28

64oz of steak Shock. Do they just throw the cow on the plate?
