To leave a workman in my house alone?

Up to you I guess.

I've done it more than once, and never had any problems. But I tend to only use workmen I feel comfortable with, even if others are cheaper.

I recently opted to pay £100 more for a fence because the cheaper guy gave me the heebies.

A reputable workman would never do anything to risk their reputation as they rely on it. If it is a long established, well known locally business or someone you trust has recommended them then I'd probably do it.

If you get any sort of vibe from them or only have a mobile number for them, then no.
