To detest most scouse celebrities

Afroturf · 07/09/2013 14:59

Cilla Black, Paul McCartney, Jimmy Tarbuck et al - celebrities who take every opportunity to remind us about their days in Scottie Road and all who, coincidentally, moved away from the city years ago.

What fake accents....I have never heard anyone else speak with Cilla Black's particular accent.

And now bloody Les Dennis has reared his head. God, how I've loathed him on Celebrity Masterchef - another one harking back about 'me Mam and Dad in Liverpool'. Fuck off. He was on radio 2 this morning with Rhod Gilbert and, my word, what a fucking name dropping twat. It was embarrassing.

I am not a fan.

Now I must mention that I'm from Liverpool, a city I love and live in today. I can't, however, abide these 'professional scousers' who go on and on about where they're from. Perhaps it's to try and fool us plebs that they are one of us. Again, do fuck off.

I don't want this thread to descend into an anti-Liverpool rant as my city is a very special place but wonder if anyone agrees with me. I think it's probably the fact that they come from the same place as me that I have a particular distain for them. I dare say that slebs from other parts of the UK annoy folk from their neck of the woods too.

Of course if we're counting as unacceptable people who've lived in L8 for a bit we'll have to include Courtney Love and, er, Hitler

Afroturf · 07/09/2013 17:20

Demented do you mean Jamie Carragher? He's definitely known for his strong accent with a lot of the foreign LFC players unable to understand him. Grin One of my favourite clips Here

I was just going to say Pete Burns mrsjay. I am a proper scouser, born in Anfield (the district that is, not on the pitch!) When I first worked in the town centre, Pete Burns worked in Probe Records which was filled at lunchtime with admiring girls, me included! He was so gorgeous back then!

MarthasHarbour · 07/09/2013 17:25

YY i was just thinking this the other day, how annoyingly false CB and PMc et al are when interviewed about the good old days of the 60s in Liverpool, when really they were living in London at the time Confused

Someone upthread mentioned Donna Air (off topic as she is a geordie) but she annoys the fuck out of me. My sister went to school with her and the day after her first Byker Grove performance had been aired she kicked off in the dinner queue the next day, tried to push in front of my sis saying 'dont you know who i am?' my sister told her to fuck off to the back of the queue and learn some manners Grin

She now tries too hard with an accent that she certainly didnt have at school Wink

Now David Morrissey on the other hand - i have fancied him for years and he can do no wrong Blush

bottleofbeer · 07/09/2013 17:27

It's a bloody minefield. The purists will say those of us under Sefton council are wools despite the Liverpool postcodes. Yet I think parts of North Liverpool (us of the non purple wheeliebins) have some of the worst accents. There's a noticeable accent change in the two miles between Waterloo and Bootle. I think the guttural phlegmy sound is much more prevalent in the North. The South accent sounds 'cleaner' to me.

mrsjay · 07/09/2013 17:27

he was beautiful in dead or alive

Wandaaa · 07/09/2013 17:27

I know everyone has mentioned him, but I have to turn the TV over every time John Bishop comes on.

As for Jamie Carragher I'll be surprised if he is on Sky sports much longer, can anyone outside Liverpool understand anything he says?

KoalaFace · 07/09/2013 17:27

I love Paul Barber (Denzil from Only Fools and Horses). If anyone has anything bad to say about him please don't! I'll be gutted!

TensionWheelsCoolHeels · 07/09/2013 17:32

I'm a but reluctant to post, seeing as I'm not a scouser and have no idea of the criteria required. But, aren't those McGann brothers who are all actors scousers? Or do they fail the test as well?

bottleofbeer · 07/09/2013 17:33

People find me very hard to understand but that's because I talk very, very fast.

Pete Burns was lovely, can't believe what he's done to himself.

KoalaFace · 07/09/2013 17:35

I just googled Paul McGann and his IMDB page doesn't say and his Wiki page says from "Liverpool, Lancashire"! Haha Wiki is so rubbish!

Lovecat · 07/09/2013 17:35

Oh, Pete Burns :( He used to be so beautiful... I saw him do a PA at The State flanked by two bodybuilders painted gold in tiny pants waving huge purple fans at him...

TheWoollybacksWife (great name btw), I looked him up and it was Chris Amoo. Seemed like a really, really lovely bloke.

Whoever it was that used to play Karen Grant in Brookie was a complete bitch. She barged to the front of a nightclub queue and still had a gob like a slapped arse on her even when she got let in ahead of the rest of us... A colleague of mine's teenage daughter did work experience on Brookie back in the early 80's. Apparently Ricky Tomlinson & Sue Johnston were utterly lovely.

Lovecat · 07/09/2013 17:36

But they were born in Blackpool and Warrington so they don't count.

bottleofbeer · 07/09/2013 17:37

Ten years in Nov since Brookie ended :(

frizzcat · 07/09/2013 17:38

Ah yes Paul Barber - good one

Now I want to know all the dirt on John Bishop - really can't abide him

pokesandprodsforthelasttime · 07/09/2013 17:38

Liverpool proabably was in Lancashire when Paul McGann was born. Merseyside was invented in 1974.

BOF · 07/09/2013 17:38

My accent is pretty soft, but that's my Crosby posho side coming out Grin

frizzcat · 07/09/2013 17:39

And I like Pete Burns - doesn't mince his words

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 07/09/2013 17:41

fatherbrianeno george melly Is proper scouse.

It is me who has only lived in liverpool briefly. Don't know why I mentioned it - it's just confusing. Grin

timidviper · 07/09/2013 17:41

Ooh yes Lovecat Ricky Tomlinson, he's a proper scouser. Isn't Sue Johnston from Warrington though?

The WoollybacksWife I wish I'd thought of that name! DH is a woollyback.

bottleofbeer · 07/09/2013 17:42

Waterloo and Crosby used to be pretty much on a par of 'poshness' I think. Waterloo is going downhill, fast.

Last few times I've been on South Road of a weekend there's been some serious, violent incident. Yet I do love a bit of South Road wrongness Grin

TheWoollybacksWife · 07/09/2013 17:44

I loved the State. Drinks first in the Harrington then into the State by 10 to take advantage of the free tickets that always seemed to be doing the rounds in 6th form. It cracks me up now that DD doesn't go out until after 11.

BOF · 07/09/2013 17:44

Oh, you and I are on the genteel side of St Johns Road Grin

HopeClearwater · 07/09/2013 17:45

Lol I'm with you on the South Road wrongness. Crosby town centre looks like a wasteland these days too. Pedestrianising Moor Lane killed it.

HopeClearwater · 07/09/2013 17:47

All the accents seem worse when I go back now. Especially the young ones. The older people seem to speak a softer version of scouse; more laconic, less aggressive.
