To detest most scouse celebrities

Afroturf · 07/09/2013 14:59

Cilla Black, Paul McCartney, Jimmy Tarbuck et al - celebrities who take every opportunity to remind us about their days in Scottie Road and all who, coincidentally, moved away from the city years ago.

What fake accents....I have never heard anyone else speak with Cilla Black's particular accent.

And now bloody Les Dennis has reared his head. God, how I've loathed him on Celebrity Masterchef - another one harking back about 'me Mam and Dad in Liverpool'. Fuck off. He was on radio 2 this morning with Rhod Gilbert and, my word, what a fucking name dropping twat. It was embarrassing.

I am not a fan.

Now I must mention that I'm from Liverpool, a city I love and live in today. I can't, however, abide these 'professional scousers' who go on and on about where they're from. Perhaps it's to try and fool us plebs that they are one of us. Again, do fuck off.

I don't want this thread to descend into an anti-Liverpool rant as my city is a very special place but wonder if anyone agrees with me. I think it's probably the fact that they come from the same place as me that I have a particular distain for them. I dare say that slebs from other parts of the UK annoy folk from their neck of the woods too.

Should add that we his loving children hid the remote ...

BOF · 07/09/2013 22:17

Frizzcat Grin

I so feel your dad's pain.

BOF · 07/09/2013 22:28

Mike Myers is Canadian-born, but both his parents were from Liverpool. I vote Acceptable Honorary Scouser.

BOF · 07/09/2013 22:30

John Parrot is perhaps borderline. I'd say Acceptable though.

frizzcat · 07/09/2013 22:42

Just me and you then BOF

Mike Myers and John Parrot are acceptable.

I was telling my sister about this thread and she said "oh what about Kenny Dalgleish?" Confused Epic Fail

Panzee · 07/09/2013 22:42

Not Liverpool, but about accents.
I used to know someone who went to school in Scotland with Robbie Coltrane. Claims his accent was English back then. :o

frizzcat · 07/09/2013 22:44

Also no one in Belfast speaks like Charlie Lawson - Jim Macdonald from Corrie

knickernicker · 07/09/2013 22:54

All scousers are professional scousers. There's a mawkery about the place. We drove into Liverpool shopping today and I saw this doctor's surgery covered in an enormous feel good homily, something like 'love life, love the pool.' And the women's hospital is called Liverpool women's not Liverpool womens hospital. There's a giant mawkfest permanently going on.

BOF · 07/09/2013 23:08

You're quite right. Nothing says mawkish like 'Liverpool Women's'. We are all just a bit shit Hmm

knickernicker · 07/09/2013 23:12

Mawkish doesn't mean shit. There's just something about the name of the hospital which I think represents how Liverpudlians feel-This is our hospital and were proud if it.

knickernicker · 07/09/2013 23:13

Catch yourself on Frizzcat.

BOF · 07/09/2013 23:15

Mawkish doesn't mean proud either. It means wallowing in misery. Which I am unconvinced that the signage of the Liverpool Women's hospital conveys, tbh.

BOF · 07/09/2013 23:21

I'm not quite right actually. Here is what the dictionary says:

mawk·ish [maw-kish]

adjective
1.
characterized by sickly sentimentality; weakly emotional; maudlin.
2.
having a mildly sickening flavor; slightly nauseating.

elcranko · 07/09/2013 23:40

Neil Buchanan is definitely acceptable, the man is a leg-end.

Saw Abbey Clancy on Strictly before, as much as she irritates me at least she hasn't tried to change her accent.

alliben22 · 08/09/2013 00:01

Jennifer Johnson, the fabulous mezzo who sang at the Proms last night is from Crosby.
I taught Ian McCulloch's daughter and Heidi Range's cousin.
Both girls were gorgeous, and Mr. McCulloch.....swooon! Even though he did wear shades at Parents evening!!

frizzcat · 08/09/2013 00:15

Bout cha Knicker

Pan · 08/09/2013 00:20

You do realise OP that this thread could be seen as just another scouser's whinge - except ironically about themselves...

BOF · 08/09/2013 00:21

Did you really, Pan?

Pan · 08/09/2013 00:25

yes, all over - Lark Lane, Rock Ferry, Sefton Park, Wavertree (Smithdown Road), Oxton - always avoiding the rent man.Grin

bottleofbeer · 08/09/2013 01:08

Jesus Cheeeerist Pan. I'm going to have to hold a minute's silence over the pure mawkishness of having had a baby at Liverpool women's mawkish 'ossy.

Kiss me arse.

AngryBeaver · 08/09/2013 04:02

What about local slebs?!
I used to work for BBC radio merseyside, met several, mostly twats. Ricky Tomlinson for instance.

But the biggest twat was a long standing presenter.
I had to go through his post everyday before he got in.
I had to remove any hate mail or anything negative so he didn't see it and get his ego dinted. (Twat)

What about Snelly?! Worked on both popular city stations for years?
Do we know him?!

Want2bSupermum · 08/09/2013 04:41

I hear you BUT I Paul O'Grady is lovely and his accept is a birkenhead accent, not Liverpool scouse. I met Clare Sweeny a few times in London and she was really nice. I think she knew she had 15mins to make her money so went for it. I don't hold that against her because she was working extremely hard when I met her.

I grew up on the Wirral and it was part of Merseyside until the 90's when it became part of Cheshire (we had L postcodes before and CH after). I grew close to the old border of Merseyside and Cheshire and no one had a strong scouse type accent all the way through to Hoylake in the early 90's at least.

Birkenhead, Wallasy, Moreton, New Brighton etc have a lot of ex-Liverpudlians living there. There does seem to have been a shift of people moving further away from Liverpool. All of my Dad's friends from schools were living in Oxton, Wallasey and Noctrum. They came from upper middle class homes. Their parents moved out towards West Kirby, Caldy, Heswall, Gayton and Parkgate in the 70's. My fathers generation moved from these areas to Chester through Manchester or London. My Dad is the only one who lives in the same spot which is in Cheshire. When I return to visit friends living in Heswall I am shocked that everyone has a scouse accept. My cousing, who grew up in Caldy, has a scouse twang. It is rather strange if you consider Nicola Horrick and Mrs Bucket (Patrician Routelage) are both from the Wirral as was John Peel. None of them have/had scouse type accepts.

I have no trouble understanding Jamie C or Stevie. I do have to translate for the Americans at the bar though!

Cazza72 · 08/09/2013 07:01

A bit confused that Jamie Redknapp's had a couple of mentions? I know he played for Liverpool, but don't think he's ever claimed to be scouse? Sure he's one of ours! Oh - as was Bob Marleys Dad ...

Cazza72 · 08/09/2013 07:05

Stand corrected - JK born in Hampshire, not Essex (cousin Frank def an Essex boy though) ... But that leads neatly on to the Mockneys ....

VestaCurry · 08/09/2013 07:07

Mawkery Hmm?
