I've had it a while and I just can't warm to it. I'm close to launching this laptop through the window on a daily basis. There may be light at the end of the tunnel with 8.1 coming out in October but so far it's a load of shit!

YANBU it is horrible and very user unfriendly.

ZacharyQuack · 05/09/2013 10:52

YANBU. I call it Windows Hate.

Crinkle77 · 05/09/2013 10:53

Yeah it's awful. You need to have a degree just to try and shut the thing down.

lizzzyyliveson · 05/09/2013 10:53

Download Classic Shell, then do bottom right 'hot corner' click on the cog icon, at the very bottom of the screen click 'change PC settings' then choose General and you can turn off the silly 'gestures' and regain control of your laptop.

LittlePocket · 05/09/2013 10:58

Thanks Lizzie will try that. I'm on the verge of completely turning my back on windows.

HATE IT.

My mother in law just got a laptop with Windows 8 and is forever bringing it to me to fix (family IT person by default). I can't wrap my head around it. I hate it.

GalaxyDefender · 05/09/2013 11:06

A rule for you ladies - with Windows operating systems, it always goes good-bad-good-bad.

XP was brilliant. Vista was shit. 7 is also brilliant. 8 is shit.
Their next one, if they follow the pattern, should be ace Grin

If you know anyone techy, see if you can find a copy of Windows 7 somewhere and replace 8 with it. It's the only real cure, I'm afraid.

AM78 · 05/09/2013 11:08

I have been so Confused with it that I have just ordered windows 7, can't wait to get back to something that actually works after 2.5 months of trying to get the blimmin thing to do what I want!

flatmum · 05/09/2013 11:10

yanbu I completely agree with you. I work in IT and everyone thinks its pants

Tapirbackrider · 05/09/2013 11:10

I'll second the previous poster who suggested windows shell - my new laptop is Windows 8, and is a massive PITA.

Windows Shell saved my sanity (and the life of the laptop)!

LittlePocket · 05/09/2013 11:10

Completely agree with you on the operating system being good-bad good-bad Galaxy. I'd be quite happy to continue to use xp despite how old it is now - so simple. The best by far. Can't complain about 7 either. Didn't like vista much but warmed to it eventually. But 8 is just the devil incarnate!

StuntGirl · 05/09/2013 11:10

I'm fine with it. I occasionally accidentally sweep and bring up a screen I don't want, but I just close it again. Don't really get all the Windows 8 hate!

liquidstate · 05/09/2013 11:34

I uploaded Shell its free and easy to use - Sanity almost restored. Doesn't get rid of the annoying black bar at the side that pops up everytime the cursor goes near though. Anyone know how to get rid of this?

Bea · 05/09/2013 11:38

oh! I hate hate hate it... I thought I would get used to it... so just hung in on there... but lasted about 8 months and then got dh to get his techy work bloke to take it off and put windows 7 back on! It is sooooo annoying... it takes 5 more clicks to do something when in 7 it's just 1 or 2!
Those flipping things that pop up and slide in and then how do you shut down and minimise windows???!!!
Arrrgh!
I think you can tell I hate it!

Yes! just get a copy of windows 7 put back on it!!!!

comingalongnicely · 05/09/2013 11:52

As per above, Classic Shell pretty much turns it back into Win 7. I put it on within the first week & haven't looked back since.

And don't bother waiting for 8.1 - the "start" button they're putting back just takes you to the stupid tiles, it's nothing like the "real" one...

jasmine3663 · 05/09/2013 11:58

I hate it. Microsoft have forgotten that they are making software for people to use!

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 05/09/2013 11:58

It's awful isnt it....that dreadful home screen.....I clicked on the desktop icon in bottom left corner and it takes me to a desktop which resembles windows 7 .

m0nkeynuts · 05/09/2013 12:00

I don't love it, but can't say it particularly bothers me either! Having said that, I do pretty much everything in the old style desktop view (with program shortcuts along the taskbar) so it doesn't feel massively different to earlier Windows versions.

HarumScarum · 05/09/2013 12:00

Yep, Classic Shell all the way. It turns your Windows 8 laptop from an irritating shiny brick into a usable item of technology. Quite honestly, if they persist with this silly tiles business, they will drive more and more people to Apple or Linux.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 05/09/2013 12:02

Recently got a new laptop, so had Windows 8 foisted upon me. Downloaded classic shell like others, so it basically looks like Windows 7.

We also discovered that there's a setting somewhere Control Panel that turns off the bit that pitches you into another screen every time your pointer gets near the edge. Before that I seriously wanted to throw things!

Sallystyle · 05/09/2013 12:06

This is why I switched to Macs.

Windows are crap, full stop.

Lonecatwithkitten · 05/09/2013 12:06

(Whispers) move over to Mac and discover not having to close things down and interface that is logical to use.

fatdaddy72 · 05/09/2013 12:09

You are being both - It was designed pretty much for new generation touch screens. On my work PC with touch screen I love it. On my laptop without touch screen I find it tiresome. The update will improve it but it's worthwhile fiddling with settings to get rid of the rubbish features as well.

flatmum · 05/09/2013 12:11

Ive got a touchscreen and it is still annoying. It is the first windows OS after 15y + usage (home and work) that has made me finally decide to buy a Mac.

fatdaddy72 · 05/09/2013 12:31

Macs are great.Until you need to spend another £1000 after three years when they are obsolecent.
