Twice a week I go food shopping & have my breakfast in the cafe (about 9.30) dc has already had a bf & a spoon of porridge. So when I order my breakfast, I always ask for the free stage one baby food. Manager (new) saw me put it in my changing bag & told me the food is to be eaten there & then. I gave the food back but politely explained that dc would have it for lunch & I would freeze the rest. No-where is the store does it say you cant take it home :-(

Yes yabu, it is not given out to stock your freezer but to feed children whilst in cafe, if you want the food take dc at lunchtime

meganorks · 04/09/2013 11:17

YABU
I think that is taking the mix a bit. They don't have to offer free baby food but it is a really nice gesture. Clearly it is meant to be for when you are there. I don't think you need a sign to tell you that. And if everyone starts pocketing it they will probably stop offering. I think you should only take it if you need it then and there.

KonnieLingus · 04/09/2013 11:17

YABU

OnTheBottomWithAWomensWeekly · 04/09/2013 11:17

yanbu. Free baby food with your meal, its up to you when you use it. Manager was a jobsworth. It's like if your sandwich came with a free bag of crisps, would they stand over you while you ate them all.
Stand up for yourself if they do it again.

HairyGrotter · 04/09/2013 11:18

YABU. It's a gesture, not a 'free for all' thing IMO

NoMoreWasabi · 04/09/2013 11:20

YABU

rattlemehearties · 04/09/2013 11:21

Yabu - but next time take it, keep it out on your tray, then put in your handbag while clearing up!

Onesleeptillwembley · 04/09/2013 11:22

Seriously? How sad is that. If you're so short should you be going to cafes? If not then have you no shame? I just read this out to my son. He said you're a 'scratter'.

OnTheBottomWithAWomensWeekly · 04/09/2013 11:24

no shame? Oh please. How is it different to the crisps example?

NoMoreWasabi · 04/09/2013 11:25

OnTheBottom - that's not a direct comparison. If I rock up with no kids I'm not given a jar of baby food. It is for the baby to have in the restaurant.

Lorelailovesluke · 04/09/2013 11:25

Why do people call people jobsworths when they don't like what they are doing. What is wrong with doing a job correctly, why do people have a problem with that.

inneedofsomehelpplz · 04/09/2013 11:29

ok, point taken lol & what on earth is a scratter? can only presume its a commoners word since ive never heard of it ;-)

If you go to Ikea, the sign says; free baby food if you spend over 3£, right? not, free baby food if your baby happens to be hungry. It's not to be kind, its not a nice gesture, its a huge multinational massive profit making entity that has one objective; to take your cash. Taking soemthing from them that they have offered when you spend money is hardly being shameless.
now, since OP says "store" in her OP and not tiny little friendly local cafe, I have the same thoughts as re Ikea.

SkinnybitchWannabe · 04/09/2013 11:31

YANBU. When my 3 were little I always got the free pot of baby food and took it home. What on earth is wrong with that?
I would not have given it back to the manager either.

paperclipsarebetterthanstaples · 04/09/2013 11:31

Yanbu. If it's free it's free. Shouldn't matter when baby eats it.

Floggingmolly · 04/09/2013 11:33

You "explained" that your baby would have it for lunch????
Did you pour the unused milk from the milk jug into a Tupperware container, explaining that it'd be just the job for your afternoon coffee as well? Hmm

Onesleeptillwembley · 04/09/2013 11:36

Oo nice one! But we're not common, sorry to disappoint. Grin It's a word commonly used here in Yorkshire by teenagers for poor, scruffy rough people. Or people that help themselves to things in the manner if the OP. I can certainly see it hit a nerve. And why.

KissMeHardy · 04/09/2013 11:40

And where, actually,OP do you draw the line at theft?

OnTheBottomWithAWomensWeekly · 04/09/2013 11:40

Yes, calling the OP a poor scruffy rough person probably would come across as rather bitchy. Could hit a nerve.
More fool you lot, making sure the big companies get as much of your money as possible, and refusing freebies on the grounds it might make you look poor or needy. That weird British reserve putting more profit in their pockets. Good show!

FruitSaladIsNotPudding · 04/09/2013 11:41

I always do this in ikea. Shocking.

inneedofsomehelpplz · 04/09/2013 11:42

hardly onesleep - thank god by dc dont use such words:-P & most mothers did this - buy a meal & get free baby food & this is how it is advertised. I phoned customer services who state it does NOT need to be eaten on site - it is a promotion to get parents to eat in their cafe rather than the store next door. but if me taking something offered for free makes me a "scratter" then I presume most posters are - who turns down a freebie?! LOL.

OnTheBottomWithAWomensWeekly · 04/09/2013 11:44

If you ever get a free chocolate with your coffee, make sure you send it back rather than take it for your kid. And that mint on the dish with your bill, you'd better swallow the whole thing before you get out the door, you common theif!

Famzilla · 04/09/2013 11:45

Theft, really?

I'm sure the cafe have bumped the price of their food up to accommodate for the price of the baby food. It was given to feed the baby, there was no agreement as to when the baby had to be fed with it and it made no difference to the cafe staff.

Some people's responses are so ridiculously OTT. To be fair I wouldn't do what the OP has done myself, but to say its theft and call her names is just pearl clutching 'holier than thou' at its finest.

HandMini · 04/09/2013 11:50

YABU. And rude.

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie · 04/09/2013 11:52

Oh bollocks....next time, just open it...take a spoon out and then take it home to freeze.
