Twice a week I go food shopping & have my breakfast in the cafe (about 9.30) dc has already had a bf & a spoon of porridge. So when I order my breakfast, I always ask for the free stage one baby food. Manager (new) saw me put it in my changing bag & told me the food is to be eaten there & then. I gave the food back but politely explained that dc would have it for lunch & I would freeze the rest. No-where is the store does it say you cant take it home :-(

What I don't understand is why you would ask for the baby food.

Yes, it is available for free if you want/need it.

But it's not the same as taking home a packet of crisps or juice or whatever that came with a meal.

You asked for the free food. But you knew you wasn't going to use it. That part doesn't make sense to me.

If the food was given to you, like the crisps example, then that's different IMO.

Not that I think it's a big deal, or that you are a thief or anything, I mean it's only a jar of food but....why ask for it in the first place?

It's been a long time since my DCs were little but I thought they did that in case you wanted something to eat, and your baby was hungry, you can get a free jar of food so you stay in the cafe and spend money, rather than going home?

not offended lol :-D find you rather amusing & was hoping to be educated on some more commoner words-if thats ok?

& I didnt actually ask for the baby food - was simply asked by the cashier if i wanted stage 1 or 2 food. its a 50p pouch which obviously i could live without but as its offered to me, not going to turn it down?!

i think ibmu by shopping where i do tbh :-|

InNeed It is a "commoner' word, its a word that's used where we live.

SPsTotallyMullerFuckingLicious · 04/09/2013 13:26

It isnt**

ArgyMargy · 04/09/2013 13:35

Er, OP you did say "I always ask for the stage one baby food" which did put a particular slant on your AIBU. I didn't think it was an automatic "here's your free jar" situation. YABU for being ambiguous.

hatsybatsy · 04/09/2013 13:38

YANBU - they gave you the food - it's an incentive they offer to get people into the cafe and it worked. Up to you when you eat it.

If you were given a prepacked kids sandwich with each adult meal - would it be stealing to take it with you if your kids didn't eat it at the cafe?

any incentive they offer is up to them but they can't retrospectively attach conditions to it.

WaitMonkey · 04/09/2013 13:39

YANBU. It really isn't theft. I would have just tried dc with a spoonful, then put it in my bag.

inneedofsomehelpplz · 04/09/2013 13:39

i do usually ask but quite often am simply offered the free food at the tills as at this time the cafe is mainly full of parents & babies :-) or if my dp is sitting at the table with dd i ask but if she is with me ((like today)) it is offered.

anyways, customer services have confirmed that it is a promotion & has been for years & is acceptable so im happy ;-)

If there is a BOGOF offer, but I only actually need one should I leave the other one there?

pebspop · 04/09/2013 13:43

tbh i was tempted to take the free pouch from ikea cafe and i haven't even weaned my baby yet!

i didn't buy an adult meal in the end but would have taken it if i did.

YANBU!

epic78 · 04/09/2013 13:44

Sorry yaba. The only cafe I know locally which does free baby food does specify it has to be eaten in cafe.

inneedofsomehelpplz · 04/09/2013 13:59

epic - which cafe is this? i was at asdas & according to customer services, free baby food is for everyone as it is a promotion & does not need to be eaten in store. there is no sign stating you need to eat the promotional baby food but there is a sign stating you cannot bring your own food/drink onto the premises. if it was only to be eaten on site then i wouldnt have the baby food as it is such a waste as she is only just being weaned. i hate waste. so maybe asda shouldnt offer stage 1 as the pouches are way too much for a tiddler!

Yanbu. It's free baby food for your baby if you have one, if you purchase crisps and get a free chocolate bar but don't fancy it right then - how many of you would honestly give the chocolate back?!

Madness!

It's free because you've spent enough for them to be able to offer it to you. They won't be making a loss.

usualsuspect · 04/09/2013 14:06

I don't think I would do it, but it's hardly the crime of the century.

epic78 · 04/09/2013 14:06

Morrisons

PedantMarina · 04/09/2013 14:07

Turn it around:

The number of places where I see the staff throw away full, still-sealed, barely-touched condiment sachets. Even sealed, I guess the staff are not sure the customer didn't leave germs all over them?

So this guy wants to take baby food that's been handled by a customer, and give to the next customer's baby? Would you want that jar on your table?

Mutley77 · 04/09/2013 14:07

I think it's fine. They did this in john Lewis when dc1 was a baby and my friends and I used to meet there a lot for lunch and coffee. We often took a couple of jars each from the basket on the counter. No one minded. It was there for customers.

usualsuspect · 04/09/2013 14:08

I don't think it would ever cross my mind to do it.

milkysmum · 04/09/2013 14:11

I would certainly take it home for later if baby not hungry when it was given- it is certainly not theft and I am no scratter either!!!!!

LegoAcupuncture · 04/09/2013 14:14

YABU. You're asking for it even though you know your child isn't going to eat it at the time. Would be different if you were ordering your food, thought your child was hungry but didn't want it after all. I'd be too embarrassed to do this.

kmc1111 · 04/09/2013 14:20

If it's something that's offered up without asking, fine, but if you have to ask for it, not ok. For example if you take a bread roll that's been put on your table to eat later, no harm done because if you don't use it, it just get's thrown away, they can't serve it to someone else. But asking for extra bread to be brought out then putting it in your bag so you can make a sandwich later isn't on.

You have to ask for the baby food, it's not part of a meal deal you're ordering for yourself and they don't just give it to everyone who walks through the door with a baby, so YABU.

inneedofsomehelpplz · 04/09/2013 14:21

epic - i wont have my breakfast at morrisons as love my ketchup & refuse to pay for it. i understand why they charge as people take them home but to punish other customers?! & when i take my kids to morrisons, if they dont eat their fruit - i take it with me - is that stealing?

OP posts:
usualsuspect · 04/09/2013 14:24

If it was offered I would take it, but I wouldn't ask for it just so I could take it home.

inneedofsomehelpplz · 04/09/2013 14:26

i can see both sides :-P
