Not as far as I know. If it is I'm owed one too!

GetStuffezd · 31/08/2013 11:39

Never heard of it - sorry!

AgentZigzag · 31/08/2013 11:40

It isn't, but on MN there's bound to be someone who can twist it to be true for you Grin

SilverApples · 31/08/2013 11:40

DB gave his wife diamonds after the birth of their boy.
Being a feminist, she insisted on diamonds for all the subsequent births, regardless of gender.

mrsjay · 31/08/2013 11:43

oh Diamonds what is this sparkly malarky after giving birth never heard of it myself what do you get if it is a girl,

I cousin gave his wife a bracelet after their first born and a necklace to match after second born Envy

AgentZigzag · 31/08/2013 11:43

She's a martyr to the cause Silver, you must be so proud of her Grin

Thurlow · 31/08/2013 11:43

Yes, I believe it is known as a "push present" Grin

VenusRising · 31/08/2013 11:44

I think it's rather charmingly called a "push present"!

SilverApples · 31/08/2013 11:44

She has a ring and a pendant and a bracelet and earrings...
Grin

limitedperiodonly · 31/08/2013 11:44

Yes, it's the reason for eternity rings. But I think it's fairly recent tradition started by De Beers.

They also started the tradition that a man is supposed to spend a month's salary on an engagement ring. I think it's gone up to three months now.

Still Grin

VenusRising · 31/08/2013 11:45

X posts thurlow! Even as far as the "apostrophises" egad!

OryxCrake · 31/08/2013 11:45

Never heard of this. I've had two boys but no diamonds!

Mind you, some people on here talk about 'push presents', which I've never come across and certainly never received. As I recall I got an ice cream after one and a croissant and a cup of tea after the other.

SilverApples · 31/08/2013 11:45

I'm a folklorist, I've never come across this as a tradition, but I'd be interested to know the origin if it is so.

Fairypants · 31/08/2013 11:45

I've heard of such a thing but not in real life- I assumed push presents were an American thing.

OryxCrake · 31/08/2013 11:46

x-posts!

mrspaddy · 31/08/2013 11:46

An eternity ring... I dont think it is necessarily for a boy. Some people get them after the first anniversary, some for first baby.

ViviDeBeauvoir · 31/08/2013 11:46

Never heard of it but somehow think I'll have a job getting my ex to stump up for two diamonds retrospectively! :)

CarpeVinum · 31/08/2013 11:46

I am English, but DH is not.

Am I owed a diamond with 13 years extra sparkle interest ?

Can I swap it for a Kenwood mixer like what my mum used to have, with all it's super amzing attachments ? I'd love one of those more than I'd like a diamond.

It used to peel potatoes and everything.

waltzingmathilda · 31/08/2013 11:47

Not a diamond but an eternity ring is often given after the birth of a first child

AgentZigzag · 31/08/2013 11:48

I can think of easier ways of getting hold of a jewelry set Silver, her dedication is astounding.

Ooh, a folklorist, that sounds interesting. Is that a full time thing or something you do out of interest?

Carriepreston · 31/08/2013 11:48

I've heard of people getting eternity rings after birth of first baby, I thought that was for boys or girls though

Misspixietrix · 31/08/2013 11:48

Not sure. Grin

VivaLeBeaver · 31/08/2013 11:48

Yes, they've been doing it since the middle ages.

mrsjay · 31/08/2013 11:49

I had to wait 15 years and 2 children to get an eternity ring now they are just pushing out one baby wasn't like that in my day Grin

SilverApples · 31/08/2013 11:49

Interest, over the last 30 years.
She is a fantastic parent and her children are lovely. She may have stopped now, but then again, she may want a tiara.
