To think size 12 is not "heavy"

I keep seeing comments on here from people who are size 10/12 who think they are heavy. I would never think this is even remotely heavy, just a healthy slim size.

I think that we have lost all perspective on what healthy is, tbh.

Every study shows that if a level of activity and mostly a good diet is followed then being overweight doesn't impact on our overall health and lifespan.

Being overweight and obese are two different things, entirely, it is the difference of liking a social drink and being a raging alcoholic for 10 years.

I have Lupus, i attend my hospital for regular appointments, i took part in a trial which included disease screening and full bloods, my score for all major illnesses/disease was in the very low category, which surprised me as i was bordering on obese, at the time (i had just come off steroids and was recovering from blood clots through Pneumonia).

My consultants explained the effect of diet and lifestyle on the body. Weight only starts to matter when it reaches a certain level, which is more than having a stone to lose, if that person's general lifestyle was good.

I am Vegan at home and Vege when out (for practicality), reading through the cheap/healthy meal thread, i was amazed that pasta and cheap meat was considered healthy and veg was a "bulk-er" and not part of the real food ingredients.

I think we have lost all focus and relay on unsupported claims about health and weight via "Women's/health" articles/magazines.

If we held up Women from some African nations as an example to how we can all look, most of us would have to starve ourselves to death. If we held up other women who have well padded arses and thighs, then many would need fat injections. We come in different shapes and sizes.

KatoPotato you look lovely in that pic

And it proves what so many of us have been trying to say

If you feel you still have belly fat to lose, that's your own personal perogative. Only you know what condition your body is in underneath your clothes.

It certainly doesn't make you body dysmorphic or any of the other ridiculous things people are saying, because you want to maintain your dress size.

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 01/09/2013 12:21

Yes, I know I'm not fat now, and I know you're supposed to have some flesh!

I'm saying if I, at 5"4, would be chubby at a size 12, then of course it's possible that someone of 5 foot could be!

I don't think being able to walk for two hours without turning a hair is anything amazing, tbh. Although it would be today for me because I have an infected foot. :(

Bunbaker · 01/09/2013 12:33

I should think that most healthy people would be able to walk for two hours without turning a hair regardless of how much they weigh.

BlingBang · 01/09/2013 12:33

I'm about 5 5" and a 12. I probably don't look that overweight in the UK to most folk but really could do with losing some weight and toning up the wobbly bits to be healthier. Of course a 12 on some people can make them look big. How can folk not see that a 12 on someone who a 5 2" and someone who is 5 10" is totally different?

BlingBang · 01/09/2013 12:35

Was the fat friend though when I lived overseas. Then felt much skinnier when back in the UK. Folk in the UK are deluded.

ILikeBirds · 01/09/2013 12:35

Yes, I find the thought that being able to walk for 2 hours without stopping is impressive is a little bit depressing tbh

RussiansOnTheSpree · 01/09/2013 12:38

Bling because they have serious issues. Which they are trying to project onto others. If I was a 12 I'd be practically round.

RussiansOnTheSpree · 01/09/2013 12:40

ILikeBirds More than a little! Hugely. We are, as a nation, becoming more and more sedentary. So many of us have practically enforced sedentary lifestyles. Exercise isn't just important for physical health, it's important for mental health.

Good luck Sunshine! Just think how much better you will feel.

FunnyRunner · 01/09/2013 12:54

Blingbang it's true what you say about being in a different country giving a different perspective. We were in Portugal over the summer and lots of the women are very slim - but equally a lot of the men are fat round their middles. I don't know if it's just the pressure of having a 'bikini' body.

But I do think genetics play a part too. Even when I was younger and slimmer I found it hard to buy bikinis abroad - my hips and breasts were just much bigger. I remember a friend working in Zara telling me that a lot of slim women with decent boobs find it hard to fit into Zara jackets etc because they are continental sizes and are cut very neatly round the chest. Certainly that was my experience - suit trousers were perfect but couldn't button the jackets round my norks.

FunnyRunner · 01/09/2013 12:55

Sunshine come and join us on the C25K threads :) It's for total beginners and I'm enjoying it so far.

Pinupgirl · 01/09/2013 13:01

sunshine-by all means try and get a bit healthier if that is a concern for you. But never beat yourself up for a size label in your clothes-its not who you are. Love yourself,be confident and you will be a lot happier regardless of whether you are a 14,smaller or bigger.

BlingBang · 01/09/2013 13:01

Funnyrunner - true, many European women are smaller than in the UK - the cut is probably different. Lived in Asia and it was hard to shop in the local clothes stores. Was often a XXL and the cut was for shorter women with small boobs. Got a shock in my first week though when went into a knicker shop and asked if they had "these" in my size to be met with, "Madame , we have nothing in your size". Grin

Bunbaker · 01/09/2013 13:04

Being somewhat underendowed in the boob department I shall get myself off to Zara to look for a jacket.

I bought a nice black jacket from BHS in the sale last month, but the darts in the bust just make me look even more flat chested Sad.

It only cost £15 though so someone will find themselves a bargain in the charity shop.

Pinupgirl · 01/09/2013 13:07

The reasons that people in Asia and some parts of Europe are generally smaller are largely genetic. The same reason why a lot of afro-carribean women tend to the larger build-again genetics.

I have exactly the same build as my mother-broad shoulders, big boobs, very slim through the hips, slim arms and legs but carry weight on our stomach. My sister is very slim and has exactly the same build as my dads side of the family-tall,slim,no boobs,no bum.

I could diet until kingdom come and I wouldn't have the same build as my sister-ditto she could eat and eat and she wouldn't have the same build as me. Vive la difference I say.

Well fancy that russians and bunburner - not from what I've seen.

Smug much? Come walking with me one day and see how you go, then. Oh and excellent selective reading there.

RussiansOnTheSpree · 01/09/2013 13:21

Sedentary lifestyles. Makes the ordinary seem extraordinary. :(

wharr I can easily imagine that you know a lot of people who can't walk for two hours. I know I do. But that doesn't make walking for two hours a Herculean or even noteworthy feat. It just shows how much attitudes in this country have changed for the worse in recent years.

wharrgarbl · 01/09/2013 13:23

Didn't say it was Herculean - it was in there as one marker of my relative fitness for things. One.
And not in the UK, as it happens.

Does anyone actually read for content, or just assume meaning from the keywords they apparently skim over?
