To think size 12 is not "heavy"

CruCru · 30/08/2013 18:51

I keep seeing comments on here from people who are size 10/12 who think they are heavy. I would never think this is even remotely heavy, just a healthy slim size.

OP posts:
usuallyright · 01/09/2013 11:35

ouryve, there've been a few people on here describing themselves as chubby, out of shape or wobbly at size 8. You might not consider that kind of comment disordered thinking or in the realms of an eating disorder, but I do.

Salbertina · 01/09/2013 11:36

Personally i think women's clothes sizing is bonkers anyway! Dh just looks for his waist/leg length or chest/neck size and bingo! For us its do bloody variable, imprecise and guilt-inducing! and all propagated half the time by bulimic beauty editors/misogynistic designers anyway!

ouryve · 01/09/2013 11:37

They're not in the majority, though, usually. And they're not the people who have been directly attacked.

Pinupgirl · 01/09/2013 11:38

It is not "up one's self" to have confidence Russian-its taking me to nearly the age of 40 to get to the stage where I am happy with the person I am-and that includes what I see in the mirror-and I wont have strangers on a forum denigrate that.

I apologised to the poster who thought I had been rude-did you miss that post in your hurry to snipe at me further?

I called no one a twat-read my posts carefully. I said that people in general who witter on about diets I find to be "miserable.boring twats". Imo of course.

Anyhoo this thread seems to be veering off in rather a strange direction so perhaps lets call it quits eh?

WorraLiberty · 01/09/2013 11:39

Absolutely Pinupgirl

WorraLiberty · 01/09/2013 11:40

Ooops X posted

I was agreeing with this...

Agreed worra-lets all agree that people come in all sorts of different shapes and sixes and as long as we are happy with our lot in life then that's all that matters.

Pinupgirl · 01/09/2013 11:42

Exactly the point I was trying to make usually before I was jumped on for being too up myselfHmm

Nowt wrong with wanting to try and be as healthy as you can and if that includes getting to a weight you feel happy at-all power to you.

Plenty wrong with people who quite obviously slim going on and on about how they have a bit of wobble to their stomach or how they must lose 7 pounds to be happy-that is fucked up as is thinking that anyone over a size 12 is obese-which I believe was the starting point for this thread?

RussiansOnTheSpree · 01/09/2013 11:42

Someone who doesn't exercise is likely to be out of shape whatever dress size they are. Being in shape is not a function of dress size. I have lost an inch off my chest since stopping doing weights at the gym (historic shoulder injury coming back to bit me on the bum). I'm less 'in shape' and yet slightly smaller. I'd prefer to be more in shape on my upper body but I can't risk my shoulder getting worse.

Birdsgottafly · 01/09/2013 11:45

"If you are 5' a 30" waist represents 50% your height. If you are 5'7" a 30" waist represents 44% of your height. Simply from a health perspective the smaller waist:height ratio is healthier."

But what about hip size? My DD buys jeans to fit her hips, the waist is to small, some women have a bigger frame (as has been said again and again, but ignored). So the waist size is irrelevant. As is sizing to anyone who has muscular thighs.

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 01/09/2013 11:45

Well that would ring a bit truer were it not for everything else you've said, Pinup!

At 5"4 and a size 8/10, I can grab flesh/fat anywhere you like to mention... at a size 12, I'd have at least another chin and a fistfuls of spare flesh. I would certainly look chubby, unless people think double chins are normal?

RussiansOnTheSpree · 01/09/2013 11:45

Several posters have said you have been rude. I haven't noticed you apologising to everyone. I find people in general who bang on and on about how confident they are (this demonstrating the complete opposite) to be overwheeningly hubristic twats. Yes let's call it quits.

RussiansOnTheSpree · 01/09/2013 11:46

Exactly, nit.

Pinupgirl · 01/09/2013 11:48

At size 8/10 and 5'4 you are not fat imo theoriginal-and women are supposed to have a bit of body fat.It serves an evolutionary purpose.

Bunbaker · 01/09/2013 11:51

"But what about hip size? My DD buys jeans to fit her hips, the waist is to small, some women have a bigger frame (as has been said again and again, but ignored). So the waist size is irrelevant. As is sizing to anyone who has muscular thighs."

Waist size is important. If your DD has a small waist in relation to her hips she probably has a healthy waist to hip ratio.

I have that problem as well. My waist is 12" smaller than my hips. Further up the thread someone pointed out that waist to height ratios is important.

This link and this one explains it.

This link explains why the waist to hip ratio is important as well.

KatoPotato · 01/09/2013 11:59

I'm a size 12. I've worked bloody hard to get here. I continue to work bloody hard. I no longer think I'm fat, but pics on profile to see if I actually am?

usuallyright · 01/09/2013 12:00

You're supposed to have some body fat Nit.
It is NORMAL.

FunnyRunner · 01/09/2013 12:02

Agree it's all to do with height and build. I'm 5'6" and at size 12 I was slim with nice curves. Even when slim overall I have a wide pelvis and good boobs. Even at size 14 I look relatively slim and in proportion because of the way I carry my weight. It helps that my arms, shoulders and face are very slim.

Bunbaker · 01/09/2013 12:03

Is that you in the blue dress? You look fantastic.

usuallyright · 01/09/2013 12:03

Kato, you are not fat. You have a lovely figure.

Pinupgirl · 01/09/2013 12:03

You look lovely kato-you are very pretty.

itsonlysubterfuge · 01/09/2013 12:05

Maybe I'm shopping in different shops then other people who have bought things in the US. I wear a size 14/16 in the US and in the UK. Maybe it's only for thinner people, or maybe you lot buy nicer clothes than I do.

Also as far as the waist to height ratio, I was trying to say that bigger taller or shorter didn't effect the size of clothes you wore, it was size of the waist (or hips in some people's case) that determined the size of clothing you wear. So someone with a 30" waist would be a size 12 regardless of their height. I may be wrong, but that is my understanding.

itsonlysubterfuge · 01/09/2013 12:07

that should saying being taller or shorter.

happybubblebrain · 01/09/2013 12:08

KatoPotato - you look great, not at all fat.

To be less than a size 12 I have to starve myself. Not healthy and not worth it.

AnyoneButLulu · 01/09/2013 12:10

Subterfuge, measurements naturally scale up with height, though they are not directly proportional. That's why BMI is based on height squared not just height or cubed. A 30 inch waist would be fine on a 6 foot woman but chubby on a 5 foot woman, and probably a health hazard based on the "half your height" rule. If my 5'11" SIL had my measurements she'd look like a famine victim, but on me (5'3") they look fine.

KatoPotato · 01/09/2013 12:12

I think it's clear that there's no exact science here! I still have belly fat to lose but I'm not going to drive myself demented doing so!

Vanity sizing aside I'm finally happy, but that's because I'm fit and healthy now.
