To not work til 1am?

I love my job. I work very hard, take my lieu time when it's been earned (eg if I work a weekend), but don't count it all up. I know for a fact I've worked way over my contracted hours recently, which I haven't minded because I enjoy it and sometimes it's necessary, and it tends to balance out.

We have a big event on on Saturday (big gala dinner) and a lot needs to be done for it. I have worked late every night this week and stayed up emailing and doing work til midnight on one evening. I left earlier yesterday (still a bit later than I would usually) and a couple of colleagues have got funny with me because I said I was meeting friends as I needed the break - ie I wasn't going to sit at home doing more unpaid overtime.

I know my limits, and I know I'll be no good to anybody if I don't get enough sleep and some rest without thinking about the dinner. I also know I have worked my absolute hardest, but one colleague has been making not so subtle comments that he doesn't think I'm doing enough. In my opinion I physically can't do any more.

AIBU to not work til 1am at home for this event?

YANBU, at all. No ever wished they worked longer or harder especially for free on their deathbed do they? Not that you're going to die or anything Grin

Enjoy your time off.

If you do work at home until 1am, it's not for the event really, is it? It will be so your colleague has no grounds to make snidey comments. Feck 'em. Go to bed. Get some sleep. All will end well after Saturday. He has no right to clock your hours. He's a prick who you will barely remember in years to come. Sleep! Now!

Oh and enjoy Saturday.

YANBU

I hate working more than my contract hours as it is expected rather than appreciated.
