Aibu to have complained about this man who came to help write will

So, me and DH desperately need to make a will.

Decided to do them separately. Man came to the house, very abrupt in his manner and not particularly likeable. Anyway, got on to the subject of what would happen to the kids if something happened to me and DH, he asked whether we were planning anymore children and I said that we weren't, he then said 'well are you having sex?'. I didn't respond and he then said 'well if you are and you don't use contraception, well you can't possibly say you are not planning anymore children.....'. He then kept blathering on about ignorant people and unprotected sex!

When he left I realised how inappropriate his comments were! I had a call after the meeting from an admin person at the company to check a few details and I said that I didn't want to proceed as I had been so appaulled by the man they sent!

I'm not sure if I was right or hyper sensitive!

Wow, totally inappropriate.

I suppose some sort of very tactful phrase about 'any future children' would have been vaguely acceptable but to comment about your sex life is just not on. You are quite right not to proceed with this 'company' - find a solicitor, preferably with a personal recommendation.

Hmm

Very weird.

eurochick · 28/08/2013 12:29

Very odd. Avoid avoid avoid.

catinabox · 28/08/2013 12:37

Oh My Gosh!! Please complain to the company that employs him OP. Ask for your money back and some sort of apology. This is absolutely awful practice and this man should not be allowed to do his job. I'm not normally so black and white but this is an breach of ethics.

Hulababy · 28/08/2013 12:37

Totally unprofessional and inappropriate. You were right to complain. I'd be tempted to put the complaint in writing also as a back up. This man needs pulling up on his methods!

I would recommend calling a solicitor who specialises in this area of law and getting them done. They will often come to the house if your prefer, or you can go to them. Many will take instructions over the phone too.

It is usually cheaper to have joint wills made, rather than separate ones.

We had our wills drawn up by a Mn's who posts under the name of mumblechum1 she can be often found posting in the legal section and is fully qualified solicitor and will writer. She did have a paid for advertisement in small business section. I would thoroughly recommend her a very efficient service and if you are not near she can do the consultation on the telephone. Her charges are very reasonable at least half of what some of our local solicitors charge for exactly the same service.

catinabox · 28/08/2013 12:40

Just to add, I really think you do need to complain officially if you can! This man is probably going into home of vulnerable people...... and sounds very poorly equipped to deal with sensitive things. (that's me being VERY measured!)

Imwoodword · 28/08/2013 13:07

Agree with mowbraygirl, mumblechum did mine and DH and was fab.

Mumblechum did my will she is a solicitor who specialises in will writing and is registered with the correct professional body.

Hegsy · 28/08/2013 13:19

Shock you're more restrained than me OP I would've kicked him out!

Hulababy · 28/08/2013 14:07

Lonecat - think mumblechum1 is a legal exec, so a lawyer but not a soliitor. But yes, mumblechum does offer a freelance will writing service via MN and has many happy customers on here - do a search.

The Will Aid scheme is running for November 2013, you pay £90 for a single or £135 for a pair of matching / mirror wills, the solicitor donates their time for free and the cash goes to various charities including Save the Children, Age UK, NSPCC, and British Red Cross. www.willaid.org.uk

Good god! Yes, you need to consider what might happen if you were to have any more kids, but that is the worst way imaginable for a professional to discuss it!!!
