Just read my friends update on FB.
"Robin Thicke is coming to my hometown......yippee!"
I commented that he was an arse whose view of women was completely wrong, and I was surprised that she was looking forwards to his visit.
She replied that his song lyrics and video were "just a bit of fun" and I needed to chill out.
I am slightly unchilled to say the least and did not want to get into a huge argument with her on FB. But I am quite shocked by her reaction. AIBU?

"Blurred Lines"
(feat. T.I. & Pharrell Williams)

[Intro: Pharrell]
Everybody get up
Everybody get up
Hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey

[Verse 1: Robin Thicke]
If you can't hear what I'm trying to say
If you can't read from the same page
Maybe I'm going deaf,
Maybe I'm going blind
Maybe I'm out of my mind
[Pharell:] Everybody get up

[Pre-chorus: Robin Thicke]
OK now he was close, tried to domesticate you
But you're an animal, baby, it's in your nature
Just let me liberate you
Hey, hey, hey
You don't need no papers
Hey, hey, hey
That man is not your maker

[Chorus: Robin Thicke]
And that's why I'm gon' take a good girl
I know you want it
I know you want it
I know you want it
You're a good girl
Can't let it get past me
You're far from plastic
Talk about getting blasted
I hate these blurred lines
I know you want it
I know you want it
I know you want it
But you're a good girl
The way you grab me
Must wanna get nasty
Go ahead, get at me
[Pharell:] Everybody get up

[Verse 2: Robin Thicke]
What do they make dreams for
When you got them jeans on
What do we need steam for
You the hottest bitch in this place
I feel so lucky
Hey, hey, hey
You wanna hug me
Hey, hey, hey
What rhymes with hug me?
Hey, hey, hey

[Pre-chorus: Robin Thicke]
OK now he was close, tried to domesticate you
But you're an animal, baby it's in your nature
Just let me liberate you
Hey, hey, hey
You don't need no papers
Hey, hey, hey
That man is not your maker
Hey, hey, hey

[Chorus: Robin Thicke]
And that's why I'm gon' take a good girl
I know you want it
I know you want it
I know you want it
You're a good girl
Can't let it get past me
You're far from plastic
Talk about getting blasted
[Pharell:] Everybody get up
I hate these blurred lines
I know you want it
I hate them lines
I know you want it
I hate them lines
I know you want it
But you're a good girl
The way you grab me
Must wanna get nasty
Go ahead, get at me

[Verse 3: T.I.]
One thing I ask of you
Let me be the one you back that ass to
Go, from Malibu, to Paris, boo
Yeah, I had a bitch, but she ain't bad as you
So hit me up when you passing through
I'll give you something big enough to tear your ass in two
Swag on, even when you dress casual
I mean it's almost unbearable
In a hundred years not dare, would I
Pull a Pharside let you pass me by
Nothing like your last guy, he too square for you
He don't smack that ass and pull your hair like that
So I just watch and wait for you to salute
But you didn't pick
Not many women can refuse this pimpin'
I'm a nice guy, but don't get it if you get with me

[Bridge: Robin Thicke]
Shake the vibe, get down, get up
Do it like it hurt, like it hurt
What you don't like work?

[Pre-chorus: Robin Thicke]
Baby can you breathe? I got this from Jamaica
It always works for me, Dakota to Decatur, uh huh
No more pretending
Hey, hey, hey
Cause now you winning
Hey, hey, hey
Here's our beginning

[Chorus: Robin Thicke]
I always wanted a good girl
(Pharell: Everybody get up)
I know you want it
I know you want it
I know you want it
You're a good girl
Can't let it get past me
You're far from plastic
Talk about getting blasted
I hate these blurred lines
(Pharell: Everybody get up)
I know you want it
I know you want it
I know you want it
But you're a good girl
The way you grab me
Must wanna get nasty
Go ahead, get at me

[Outro: Pharrell]
Everybody get up
Everybody get up
Hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey

Yes we all know the lyrics. Thank you for sharing.

She can like who she likes!

I wonder if OP would be up in arms if her friend posted 'Off to see a Wagner opera... I just love Wagner!' whether she'd feel sanctimonious enough to berate her friend.

People can have different likes to yourself. She said she liked him that's all. Not that she thought is lyric writing skills were superb and she loves the message his song portrays.

MissOtisRegretsMadam · 25/08/2013 08:38

Yabu

But why is all the hatred aimed at just robin thicke and not at pharrel and ti? They feature on the track and produced it.

ILetHimKeep20Quid · 25/08/2013 08:38

I'm sure not everyone knows them all. It's quite useful to reference the subject of derision, gives everyone a chance to join in.

FFS More pearl clutching and bosom hoiking about Robin Thicke! If you don't like his music don't listen or watch his music videos! YABVVU!

superstarheartbreaker · 25/08/2013 10:34

So I'm not the only one who feels the same about this tune then? What a shame that such a catchy tune has such shite lyrics and an appauling video. DD loves this tune but I was horrified when we watched it on U tube.

He is fit but Pharrel is fitter! I'm trying to convert dd to 'Get Lucky' by Daft Punk. Not sure if that is totally appropriate for a 5 year old but innocence is bliss! At least the video is clean.

superstarheartbreaker · 25/08/2013 10:43

[Pre-chorus: Robin Thicke]

You see the thing about this song that confuses me is that the chorus below could be seen as feminist....unless he means it in a sarcastic Taming of the Shrew type context..can anyone shed some light on this for me please?

OK now he was close, tried to domesticate you
But you're an animal, baby, it's in your nature
Just let me liberate you
Hey, hey, hey
You don't need no papers
Hey, hey, hey
That man is not your maker

If not mean ironically, I quite like these lyrics above. The rest is awful.

izzydazzling · 25/08/2013 10:54

there's all sorts of shit from friends on FB that I do not agree with - fox hunting, EDL, extreme patriotism, hunning, arse licking, blessedness, even a guy in America who is very fond of his guns. If I got rid of everyone it would just be me talking about my tea and posting Gene Pitney videos.

YABU and this is coming from someone who has had her own Thicke rant on FB (and only one person replied, so she can stay...)

Have to agree with izzydazzling, there's guaranteed to be one thing about every person on your facebook that you really disagree with-and vice versa.

YANBU to think that song (much as i loved the tune before i realised the lyrics) and him are shite.

YWBVVU to try and shame her like that by saying you were 'surprised she was looking forward to his visit' as if she'd gone down in your estimations and using her fb as your soapbox. No wonder she told you to chill out.

Remember it's not what you say most of the time but how you say it. If you'd just commented with 'thanks for telling me where to avoid :)' without the shaming and soapboxing, you probably wouldn't have got that back.

SlobAtHome · 25/08/2013 11:48

Blurred lines is about a girl that is kinky that the man has a slight obsession with because of that as he is kinky too...

What's wrong with that? He's not saying that everyone has to be like that.

Anyway, ignoring all that YABU to have bothered commenting in the first place. It had nothing to do with you and YABevenmoreU that you think she didn't respond properly to your unwanted input. Even if you were right about him.

onedev · 25/08/2013 12:11

I'm with Catgirl Grin

cushtie335 · 25/08/2013 12:37

Until I came on this forum I'd never heard of Robin Thicke or this stupid Blurred Lines song. I don't think I've actually heard the song yet, at least not consciously.

YABU. It's nothing to do with you if she likes this guy or not. It's a personal choice.

cushtie335 · 25/08/2013 12:38

Snorting at izzydarling and her Gene Pitney vidoes. I think you and me would get on.

DevastatedD0G · 25/08/2013 12:44

I would well do Robin Thicke, mostly because he's just filth. Some people like that.

KellyHopter · 25/08/2013 12:46

"Should also say that she's always been the type to share or like posts that are a bit "Don't let any man tell you how to live" people, IYSWIM.
so this comment has made me think she's going back on all that now."

Darren can't wash-up for toffee
That stupid Marilyn Monroe quote
Girl power

Anyone can trot out vapid, asinine tripe because Cosmo tells them they should. Means sod all about their opinion on actual misogyny. In fact, ime, often indicates they don't have one.

ILetHimKeep20Quid · 25/08/2013 12:49

But us women aren't allowed to be kinky of mine a bit of rough, or indeed filth are we?

ILetHimKeep20Quid · 25/08/2013 12:50

*or like

BelieveinWigan · 25/08/2013 13:19

YABVVVVU She can like whoever get on with your life and if it was me I would have unfriended you from your comment

pianodoodle · 25/08/2013 13:32

Only time I mentioned someone else's choice of show in a (very) derogatory way on FB was a family member who announced she was off to see Psychic Sally.

I just assumed she was joking but turned out she wasn't Blush

cushtie335 · 25/08/2013 13:35

Lol, Sally Morgan with her amazing psychic earpiece and amazing psychic employees quizzing the audience in the foyer and her amazing psychic employees utilising that aforesaid earpiece in a very unphsycic manner...

pianodoodle · 25/08/2013 13:42

Haha! In my defence I might not have posted anything if I'd thought she was serious.

Kind of hard to back pedal once you've already commented "pahahaha! What a bag of old wank!"

Only realised my error because all the subsequent comments were all supportive and enthusiastic!

cushtie335 · 25/08/2013 13:44

Snorting at "bag of old wank" you have a way with ze words pianodoodle.

Alisvolatpropiis · 25/08/2013 14:04

I've seen the lyrics prior to them being typed out in their entirety on this thread. Probably on the other thread about it.

Bar the anal sex reference (doesn't do it for me) they can be taken two ways 1) song about consensual rough sex 2) excusing rape.

I like the song. Yes the lyrics could have been different, the beat would have carried pretty much any lyrics.

It's not very feminist to tell other women what they can or can't like is it? Bit like Germaine Greer saying some women are too pretty to be feminists Hmm it smacks of "my way of thinking is right, yours is wrong, do as you're damn well told". Which is erm...the opposite of what feminism should be isn't it?
