to have gone through 3 sets of red lights?

Roadworks have been on my street since last November. There are 3 sets of temporary traffic lights meaning if you time it badly you add 15 minutes to your journey.

morning sickness is dreadful just now. I needed to go to Asda fifteen minutes away.

First I was stuck behind someone doing 25 mph in a 40 zone. Then on the way back someone was stopping all the time for no reason. Then came to a road with speed bumps and someone was stopping completely dead before tackling each speed bump. Then all the lights were on red. Nothing was coming so I went through them all. Then got home and vomited.

BU?

You are a danger to your baby and other road users. Stay off the road if you don't feel well enough to drive. No trip to Asda can be worth risking your life and others for.

ShadowSummer · 24/08/2013 20:52

YABU.

Driving through red lights is dangerous behaviour - and if you were retching and almost overcome by nausea, you most likely weren't in any fit state to be checking carefully enough to be totally sure nothing was coming (or starting to come) in the other direction through the roadworks.

You got lucky in that there wasn't any oncoming traffic, that's all. You surely must know that this was unreasonable behaviour, morning sickness or not?

Runningchick123 · 24/08/2013 20:54

Kirstyjc - it might not have been a fine, it could have been a serious collision and that would be a whole lot worse than the cost of valenting the car.
There was a third option - open the car door and throw up on the road right there, which is not pleasant but is better than causing an accident by running a red light.
There is no excuse for running one red light deliberately, let alone three red lights simultaneously.

Fakebook · 24/08/2013 21:31

Astonishing. You still don't think ywbu.

Why don't you read these stories and hopefully you'll change your mind:

Lives ruined because of careless driving.

Pigsmummy · 24/08/2013 21:37

I hope you get a ticket.

ExitPursuedByABear · 24/08/2013 21:53

I doubt the op was driving at 105mph. We don't know the exact circumstances of the temporary lights so all this hand wringing is a bit OTT.

SilverApples · 24/08/2013 21:54

Nah, she's an arse.
There should be no hand wringing, there should be a boot up the bum for an entitled and dangerous driver.

jammiedonut · 24/08/2013 21:56

You had the opportunity to stop when the lights turned red. If not the first set, then at least the second and third.
Why post on AIBU if you are so certain you are being unreasonable. It was wrong. It was illegal. You should've known better. If you feel you are too sick to stop at red lights you are too sick to drive, so please stop, at least until your ms wears off. You were very lucky in this instance, and I doubt you'll get a ticket if that's what you're worried about.

P.s not being unsympathetic, ms is an absolute bitch, I had to stop pretty much any activity that involved being upright and moving for a good six weeks because I was an absolute wreck

jammiedonut · 24/08/2013 21:57

Oh and the speed doesn't necessarily matter exit.My db was hit by a car doing 20mph. It didn't kill him but he did end up in hospital.

ExitPursuedByABear · 24/08/2013 22:00

I was responding to a link.

StephenFrySaidSo · 24/08/2013 22:24

if you are retching that means you immediately pull over in my book. no negotiation on that. retching means very likely to vomit which could cause serious loss of control- it is so dangerous to have taken that risk with your own and others' lives. if you retch at all whilst driving you MUST stop the car- it really is that simple.

the fact that on top of that risk you then went through 3 red lights just makes it 10 times more dangerous. the road space was already compromised by traffic lights and the road works equipment so if you had suddenly come across a vehicle or needed to vomit you were in a reduced space and far more likely to hit something. madness tbh. you put yourself in so much danger.

Fakebook · 24/08/2013 22:33

That link wasn't hand wringing, it's the potential outcome of driving dangerously. Accidents aren't a figment of someone's imagination. They do happen and happen when you least expect it.

Famzilla · 24/08/2013 22:42

"I'm certainly not an unsafe driver"

"I ran three red lights whilst retching and choking"

Hmm
SilverApples · 24/08/2013 22:56

Because I needed summat from Asda.
So it was perfectly reasonable.

candycoatedwaterdrops · 24/08/2013 23:09

I'm not sure what you gained from posting here. You may agree you were unreasonable but by listing your reasons, it just looks like you're trying to excuse yourself regardless of what you claim.

Tailz · 24/08/2013 23:10

OP, why on earth did you post about this? Serious question.

What were you expecting people to say? Is it some sort of sick boast? I genuinely don't understand.

WMittens · 24/08/2013 23:11

Is it some sort of sick boast?

I see what you did there.

daisychain01 · 24/08/2013 23:18

This thread has really lost me, or maybe I'm just a bit slow on the uptake. What does drivingisanightmare (hmmm .. apt name?) expect from this thread? Its just a succession of irrelevant lame excuses and after-the-fact justifications about breaking the law. No if's or but's, its as clear as night follows day.

Normally AIBU threads are posted because there is some dilemma or possibly multiple different possible outcomes. The law is black and white so there is no ambiguity when trying to assess liability. A red light is there for a reason, even if it is 3 in the morning or 3 in the afternoon. Circumstances dont come into it!

When you're in a hole, it's best to stop digging!

daisychain01 · 24/08/2013 23:20

tailz we x posted, clearly there is a lot of head-scratching going on!

JenaiMorris · 25/08/2013 09:26

The law might be black and white (although even then there are differences in how people are punished dependent on the circumstances in which they commit an offence), but life isn't.

OP could see the way ahead was clear. She panicked but I doubt she'd have jumped those lights if there had been something approaching or (ffs, like it's relevant) children on the road.

I can well imagine a situation in which it wouldn't be dangerous to jump a light. It might be unwise and illegal, but not necessarily putting anyone in danger. Comments about OP putting her unborn baby at risk are below the belt.

It was a poor decision made in a stressful situation and, if caught, i would expect and endorse points and a fine despite the extenuating circumstances. But I'm far more perturbed by the hysteria, blind adherence to roolz and mob mentality on this thread than by the OP's driving tbh.

ExitPursuedByABear · 25/08/2013 09:27

Well said Jenai.

'But I'm far more perturbed by the hysteria, blind adherence to roolz and mob mentality on this thread than by the OP's driving tbh.'

I rather like the fact that we have clear rules for driving in this country. I also prefer it when people abide by them.

JenaiMorris · 25/08/2013 09:47

So do I , silver. But (now it's my turn to be a little hysterical) I also prefer to look at transgressions on a case by case basis. When a society is so fixated on rules that it doesn't have the capacity to empathise (not condone - just to employ intelligence and imagination to seek to understand how and why a law was broken) and sometimes cut an offender a little slack, then it's in trouble.

JenaiMorris · 25/08/2013 09:59

This reminds me of benefits cheat threads, where inevitably there will be several posters who, through misplaced envy I suspect, will call for the OP to report the offender because 'no ifs, no buts , it's against the law', regardless of the circumstances.

They'd happily report someone doing a little cash in hand to get out of a tight spot and lump them together with those who genuinely take the piss. Those threads scare me.
