I am actually quite heart broken about the dross they are stuck with.

American tween shows Confused Terrible. Why do they all sing?

Cartoons today Hmm

Lad at work, 23 - never heard of Thundercats, or He-man.... Jesus wept.*

*I bet he actually did too, fairly certain Jesus loves He-man.

AIBU to feel this way? WIBU to buy all those great shows on DVD and make DD watch them and only them

Do you think it would consitute a criminal offence to hunt down whoever made Spongebob, lock them in a cellar, and throw away the key

I'm sure today's "kids" will say the same eventually and get all nostalgic about Spongebob...I actually like Spongebob! Never really liked He-Man, but give me Dangermouse any day!!!!

Bluestocking · 24/08/2013 09:31

I was a child in the 60s/70s. As far as I'm concerned, 80s/90s kids shows are an abomination. There are some awful kids' shows about now, but Spongebob is great - very surreal and witty. Try it again!

TylerHopkins · 24/08/2013 09:31

Show them Grange Hill, what school used to be like!

insummeritrains · 24/08/2013 09:32

Totally agree. Some of the drama in the 80's and 90's was brilliant for teens too..press gang, byker grove, grange hill, Moondial. Thought provoking storylines..what do they have now?? Tracey beaker?!

brightnearly · 24/08/2013 09:35

What I miss is stuff like 'The Tripods', properly mysterious and scary

TheFoosa · 24/08/2013 09:36

my dd LOVES Fresh Prince of Bel Air

Hazelbrowneyes · 24/08/2013 09:44

Oh I do like Spongebob but tv shows when I was a kid were fab.

You couldn't beat The Sooty Show IMO. I love watching episodes on Youtube.

Saved by the bell, California Dreams, Boy meets world, Rugrats, Clarissa, Hey Arnold, Family matters, Beverly Hills 90210, Blossom, Home Improvement, Sabrina & Step by Step were among my favourites.

SPsTotallyMullerFuckingLicious · 24/08/2013 09:46

I still watch Fresh Prince and Kenan and Kel now.

SpongeBob is great. We are watching the movie right now.

I loved Byker Grove and Grange Hill.

Art Attack with Neil Buchannan as well. Not that fanny faced child on the Disney Channel

AuntieStella · 24/08/2013 09:47

I'm another feeling sorry for those who didn't get to see 60s/70s TV shows!

I think iCarly is great and never liked Grange Hill at all.

Rentaghost was amazing but to tidays kids would be just absurd really with the wobbly sets and so on.

commanderprimate · 24/08/2013 09:51

Totally agree! I showed my three year old a 1978 edition of Playschool recently, and he absolutely loved it, Johnny Ball and Floella Benjamin had him giggling away in seconds.

dopeysheep · 24/08/2013 09:51

Also - Phineas and Ferb, Regular Show, Adventure Time - all great!

Fakebook · 24/08/2013 09:51

My dd is always asking me to put on cartoons I watched when I was small on YouTube. She now loves Thundercats, rugrats, Popeye the sailor man, tom and jerry, looney tunes and pink panther. She also loves Maid Marian and her Merry men.

IMO, there's very few good cartoons, comedy shows, game shows and dramas for children on TV these days

Tallalime · 24/08/2013 09:52

Nope I cannot stand Spongbob, it's awful. DD watches it all the time, several times I have caught myself humming 'Computer Wife Karen' at work Angry

I will definitely give you 70's shows - lots of those were fabulous too

There was a lot of good child/teen drama in the late 80s early 90s. The BBC doesn't make things like the Queen's Nose and the Demon Headmaster anymore, which we watched right up until about 12/13.

Sunday night dramas like the Narnia dramas, aren't broadcast either anymore.

BatmanLovesAllan · 24/08/2013 10:06

I really, really miss Pinky and the Brain Sad

BitchyRestingFace · 24/08/2013 10:07

We have lots of them for our DC. Not so much 90s (bit past our era, we were teens by then) but 70s/80s.

What I think is a shame is the demise of the children's TV slot on BBC1 and ITV from 3.30 till 5.35 (Neighbours time!). Because those were all that was on for kids, so that was what you watched, and your friends all watched it too, there was a universality to it that I don't think there is anymore, with 4527896254 satellite channels showing 24/7 programming.

Agree 100% with the posters who miss things like Moondial, Tripods and so on. The BBC (and ITV to a lesser extent) was great at those spooky / mystery serials. Dark Season was another, with a young Kate Winslet.

Challenge TV was showing re-runs of Knightmare recently. I had a good old wallow in nostalgia Grin

dufflefluffle · 24/08/2013 10:12

As a family our favourites are Tom and Jerry and Spongebob!! Some of todays shows aren't bad....and some of the old cartoons were awful (I hated the Road Runner and Bugs Bunny)

I've been watching Funhouse and Knightmare on Challenge with the kids and they love them! They did ask what cassettes and record tokens were when Pat Sharp was announcing the prizes on Funhouse though, and why a kid would want a leather briefcase Grin.

BitchyRestingFace · 24/08/2013 10:27

Oh duffle we love Roadrunner...but I loathe Spongebob and refuse to have it on!

Pinky and the Brain and Animaniacs were actually hilarious Grin

I think kids programmes today are far better- Aquabats, Almost Naked Animals, Spongebob, the new Looney Tunes is fab.
Saying that DS (5) is partial to a bit of Bananaman and Hong Kong Phooey.
On that topic was I the only only one who didn't know HK Phooeys name was Penry not Henry week. It's short for Penrod apparently. (One for the Baby names topics perhaps)
