I am actually quite heart broken about the dross they are stuck with.

American tween shows Confused Terrible. Why do they all sing?

Cartoons today Hmm

Lad at work, 23 - never heard of Thundercats, or He-man.... Jesus wept.*

*I bet he actually did too, fairly certain Jesus loves He-man.

AIBU to feel this way? WIBU to buy all those great shows on DVD and make DD watch them and only them

Do you think it would consitute a criminal offence to hunt down whoever made Spongebob, lock them in a cellar, and throw away the key

Moon dial was brilliant. I used to really want to swish about that hall and garden in a long dress. When I grew up I joined a re enactment society and ended up doing an event at Belton House (the house in the series) so I got to live that dream, it was as fab as I thought it would be. I have a picture of DS 1 and his friend on the sundial all dressed up and another of them running down the long path like little moon dial ghosts. It's a brilliant and evocative place.

Tallalime · 24/08/2013 10:50

I was quite scared of tripods Blush

There were definitely more 'family' orientated shows on weekend evenings when I was a kid. Or maybe kids just watched more 'adult' tv then as they had no choice.

I'm not sure that having hundreds of dedicated kids channels is that great an idea...

I have a major weakness for DVDs and in particular nostalgic programmes from my yoof (I'm 26)

This Xmas' DVDs will hopefully include CatDog, Rugrats and Hey Arnold as well as new movies like Despicable Me 2.

DS turns 4 next week and one of his presents is a vintage Captain Scarlet dress up outfit that DH found cheap on eBay - we have the entire CS on video and he loves them (and Thunderbirds).

My DCs love lots of the older Disney (I actually got goosebumps a couple of years ago when I saw that they were finally releasing Fantasia on DVD - at that time we didn't have a VHS player so I hadn't seen it for years), topcat (NOT that awful film that was released recently Angry), Hong Kong Phooey, proper old Looney Tunes, Fairly Odd Parents, Dungeons and Dragons, New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh...

Starting to get them into Famous Five too :o

We don't generally watch actual telly (that's not me being smug BTW, they still have too much screen time, it's just DVDs instead) so they don't really know what's old and what's new IYSWIM? In fact when my dad gave us the old VHS player so we could finally watch some videos, they thought it was the coolest most gadgety thing ever. Funny how times change!

fuzzpig · 24/08/2013 11:05

Mind you I think every generation will mostly think new stuff is crap. My DSD is 15 and recently said with a sigh "I just can't watch Disney channel anymore, it's all crap! Bring back the old stuff!" referring to things like That's So Raven which were around about 5 years ago :o I think she is going to be a nostalgia nut like me and DH. She is always showing the DCs things like Kim Possible on youtube :)

LittleWhiteWolf · 24/08/2013 11:05

I don't know, there are some great remakes on these days. Spiderman, Avengers and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are all new and great fun for DD who is 4 and for DH and I, too!

catinabox · 24/08/2013 11:11

Chocky The BEST kids television ever.

Byker Grove Fantastic.

Moondial Fantastic.

Finger bob

You can get all the above on you tube. I've re watched loads of it over the last few years and it[s great.

CogDat · 24/08/2013 11:13

Kenan and Kel was awful. Saved by the bell was dire. Sabrina the teenage witch was dreadful. I could go on. Power Rangers? Eugh.
See, this is because I am older!
Your DC will be nostalgic for Tracy Beaker and Iggle Piggle just the same.

Billwoody · 24/08/2013 11:17

Has anyone mentioned The littlest hobo yet'
There's a voice that keeps on calling me....

MummyBeerest · 24/08/2013 11:18

YANBU. I've been putting old Muppets and Muppet Babies on YouTube for DD. She loves it.

And Art Attack was awesome.

Kid shows today do seem a lot more...kiddish than the old ones. Movies too.

I watched Matilda on Netflix the other day and was really shocked by some of the content. It was my favourite when I was young but now I can see that the humour was really dark.

might explain me a lot

KinkyDorito · 24/08/2013 11:19

Loved the 80s/90s cartoons - Jem, She-ra, Thundercats, X Men

But, also love Adventure Time now.

BikeRunSki · 24/08/2013 11:23

Ah, but have any of you seen That Puppet Game Show yet? Has become a firm favorite in this household. DC are very nearly 2 and 5 and DH and I reminice about The Muppets.

Mumbledore · 24/08/2013 11:24

I still miss The Raccoons on a Saturday morning Sad 'This is the Evergreen forest. Quiet, peaceful, serene. That is until Bert Raccoon wakes up...'

Tallalime · 24/08/2013 11:29

Oh! I had a Jem doll. She looked like a man in drag but she had flashing earrings.

I recently bought DD a Keyper from e-bay, she loves it.

I seem to remember a lot of plucky orphans (or as good as) on TV too. Pippi Longstocking - I loved her!

Loved, loved, loved The Tripods and agree with the other posters who said kids today are missing out on the drama programmes we watched in our youth.

However, there are some brilliant kids cartoon out there at the moment. Current favourites (mine, never mind the kids) are; Adventure Time, Regular Show, Gumball and even at times Phineas and Ferb. Although my favourite cartoon as a kid was Battle of the Planets, which I have since watched as an adult and is utter shite.

Viviennemary · 24/08/2013 11:37

I loved the one where the boy turned into a dog. Can't remember what it was called. There might have been a book too.

Tallalime · 24/08/2013 11:39

Woof?

ShakeAndVac · 24/08/2013 11:44

Ayone remember Alf - the alien?

Oh, I loved Alf! He chased cats and tried to eat them and came from the planet Melmac!
Grin

I loved the one where the boy turned into a dog. Can't remember what it was called. There might have been a book too.

That'd be Woof, I liked that too. Smile obvs spent far too much time watching telly
I also liked Mike and Angelo, with the alien who walked on ceilings

GrandstandingBlueTit · 24/08/2013 11:48

YABU to start a thread like this and name - what were they? - Thunderbirds? Thundercats? And ... He-man? ... as the epitome of great shows from that era... Hmm

I've never even heard of Thundercats and I'm 39. I've never watched He-man.

EstelleGetty · 24/08/2013 12:00

CBBC's remit was changed a while ago so that its programming was aimed strictly at under 12s. That's why children's TV is so shit! CBBC and CITV were still full of terrifying, pull no punches programmes in the 80s and early 90s and we could like it or lump it!

Mumbledore, The Raccoons on a Saturday morning was awesome! With its weird, oddly serious theme tune over the closing credits. Tallalime, I am so jealous of your Jem doll. I loved Jem. On YouTube, there are some very rude re-dubs of Jem and the Holograms where she's called Jizz. They are amazing.

gemdrop84 · 24/08/2013 12:06

I feel the same about today's tv, I mean wtf is Fleabag monkey face about??!! And it's all computer generated crap. I have been educating dd on decent kids tv. We have thundercats, and watched many cool shows on youtube. So far she loves Button moon, Looney Tunes, Tom and Jerry, old Disney cartoons, Gummi bears, Jem and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Fillyjonk75 · 24/08/2013 12:10

I love loads of stuff on CBBC. Tracey Beaker, Horrible Histories, Winging It, Marrying Mum and Dad to name but a few. DDs hardly watch any cartoons, only Care Bears, Milly Molly or Madeline on TinyPop.

In any era there are marvellous programmes and not so good ones. By the way, the "Things were better in my day" attitude means you have one foot in the grave, in my book.

Fillyjonk75 · 24/08/2013 12:11

The Sooty Show is still on CITV. I think it's better than I remember as a kid as it doesn't have Matthew Corbett, who I never liked much.
