to hate this "D"C, "D"H, "D"D business

... and wonder if everyone else hates it too and is just to afraid to break the cycle! I'm a relative newcomer to posting on forums, and I'm sure there is some hilarious origin to the tradition. But:

  • it now just looks and sounds twee
  • it isn't humorous in any way
  • you'd all save yourselves a keystroke if you just typed D, H, P, M, C, etc...?? Still perfectly understandable

There are some ambiguities I guess - S for son or sister? but that's still there whether or not you drop the D anyway ..

Go on .. I dare you ...

I've never liked it. But I think it's against the law not to use them. Grin

Panzee · 23/08/2013 20:04

I hate it, and don't use it. :o

ChippingInNeedsSleepAndCoffee · 23/08/2013 20:04

Aww clueless newbies often say this - never mind, most of them get over it pretty quickly when they apply some logic to it :)

Crowler · 23/08/2013 20:04

I hate it, and don't use it.

ditto

StuntGirl · 23/08/2013 20:05

Just use husband, sister etc. There's no rule that says you have to use the abbreviations.

ilovebabytv · 23/08/2013 20:05

it doesnt bother me but then neither does bubba/hun/txtspk/xxx. But i do find the hypocrisy of people getting on their high horses about the latter whilst using dp etc annoying!

meditrina · 23/08/2013 20:05

ODFOD, and use other sites if you don't like this one.

Chanatan · 23/08/2013 20:06

"when in rome",springs to mind.

pianodoodle · 23/08/2013 20:06

I'm newish I prefer typing the whole word out but don't as it didn't seem to be the done thing!

Nagoo · 23/08/2013 20:07

If you use LO instead I will be judging.

Welcome to MN :)

You'll fall in soon enough. You will one day say DH in a text message by mistake.

MissStrawberry · 23/08/2013 20:07

Since it isn't meant to be funny it is irrelevant that you don't like it.

If you don't like it here, go away.

girliefriend · 23/08/2013 20:07
Grin

I am too institutionalised in the ways on mn not to use it now but I don't like it and even worse on occasion think in terms of 'dd' - arghhhh!!!

CoteDAzur · 23/08/2013 20:07

Another newbie. Bless Smile

pianodoodle · 23/08/2013 20:07

Too many "donts" and "didnts" in that last sentence for it to make much sense :)

TattyDevine · 23/08/2013 20:08

Go with it, twas ever thus...

Merrylegs · 23/08/2013 20:09

Yes. Obviously it's naff and twee but, honestly? It's just internet shorthand. Give it a week or two and you won't even notice.

MissStrawberry · 23/08/2013 20:09

"as it didn't seem to be the done thing!"

Stop with this done thing crap. Make your own choices about what you post and don't be a sheep.

Capitola · 23/08/2013 20:11

I hate it, but do it, unless I remember not to.

TheDoctrineOfPositivityYes · 23/08/2013 20:13

DH is clearer than just H.

SpottyDottie · 23/08/2013 20:13

i hate it too. I don't refer to my husband as my dear husband in real life, however much I love him!

notanyanymore · 23/08/2013 20:15

is the D for Dear?

notanyanymore · 23/08/2013 20:16

Ah sorry, Spotty's already answered that!

meditrina · 23/08/2013 20:17

"D" also stand for dratted, damned, dastardly, dreadful (add your own here).

MN is a community with it's own idiolect. To can join it or not. THe Internet is a huge place, and I am sure there are sites with idiolects where you will feel at home. If this isn't the one, you won't settle here, and best to leave now.

Bumblebee333 · 23/08/2013 20:19

I dont mind seeing it written but if I want to tell my dh (ha) something I have read on here its awkward because I have to change it to what I know he will understand.

NadiaWadia · 23/08/2013 20:20

It is stupid, but I am guilty of using it as well. The main problem is the ambiguity, like you said DS could be sister or son, also DF could be father, fiancé or friend. Why not just type the word out. Then some posters get it mixed up so you have no idea what they are banging on about.

Then with the children, eg if you have 2 boys and 2 girls they are DS1, DS2, DD1 etc, right? But instead some posters put DD3 to mean their DD is 3 years old. More confusion!

But I suppose it doesn't really matter, and I doubt it will change as it seems part of the MN culture. Maybe there should be a guide for newbies that also explained things like biscuits (which I still don't get!)
