to hate this "D"C, "D"H, "D"D business

... and wonder if everyone else hates it too and is just to afraid to break the cycle! I'm a relative newcomer to posting on forums, and I'm sure there is some hilarious origin to the tradition. But:

  • it now just looks and sounds twee
  • it isn't humorous in any way
  • you'd all save yourselves a keystroke if you just typed D, H, P, M, C, etc...?? Still perfectly understandable

There are some ambiguities I guess - S for son or sister? but that's still there whether or not you drop the D anyway ..

Go on .. I dare you ...

I've always seen it as merely a code, and not implying "dear" at all, any more than "dear Mr X" means you're chummy with the addressee.

On the other hand, LO gets on my three pennies, as does "baby" used without the definite article, e.g. "when baby arrives/ was feeding baby yesterday. Boak.

echt · 23/08/2013 23:11

That should be threepennies.

pianodoodle · 23/08/2013 23:14

*pianodoodle (and others) no one cares if you choose to type out husband, son, daughter etc - they only care when someone whinges about an internet wide abbreviation or when they type things like hubby. bubba, little man etc.

Duly noted :)

Do people sound out "dear/darling husband" when reading posts? When I read it my inner voice says "dee aitch" and I know they're talking about their husband.

Nanny0gg · 23/08/2013 23:45

What Suelford and echt said.

I've been on loads of forums (being old, I even remember when it wasn't Forums, it was Usenet) and you just get used to however things are done on each one.

There's no problem if you don't follow 'convention' to the letter, but for some reason it does seem to grate if you bring in 'conventions' from Netmums another forum.

sweetiepie1979 · 23/08/2013 23:50

Yeah! I hate it and try not to use it! But I've been using it more lately I'm gonna stop. It's so annoyingly twee your totally right and I'm so glad you reminded me.

Kendodd · 23/08/2013 23:56

I hate it, but use it. I'm not going to in future (I'm a rebelling sheep).

kitnkaboodle · 23/08/2013 23:58

Up the revolution!

OP posts:
usualsuspect · 24/08/2013 00:02

Don't use it then, no one will give a fuck.

usualsuspect · 24/08/2013 00:06

Although, you can't use, hubby, other half ,partner etc or someone will start a thread moaning about that.

Mn is not the only forum on the internet, and guess what, they all have their own acronyms.

Go and tell them they are doing it wrong.

jessieagain · 24/08/2013 00:23

It is just shorthand because when you read a post quickly ot skim read it, husband and daughter and son doesn't stand out as clearly as dh, dd and ds.

Also if you just wrote h, d and s it would be quite unclear as well.

It helps speed up writing as well.

usualsuspect · 24/08/2013 00:25

It doesn't make you some sort of edgy rebel if you don't use it.

Write how you like.

kitnkaboodle · 24/08/2013 00:34

"It doesn't make you some sort of edgy rebel if you don't use it."

damn!

BD stands for Baby Dance Shock I thought it stood for Badoink Blush

Baby dance is just fucking awful though, awful.

exoticfruits · 24/08/2013 07:28

They did at least get rid of BD-I think it got ridiculed too much.

theodorakisses · 24/08/2013 07:28

I also hate it, its smug and twee. I have never used them apart from op which is used on normal forums.

FurryDogMother · 24/08/2013 07:38

Another hater here, for me it makes posts harder to read, not easier, and I get confused between all the DS, DSis, DSIL etc. etc. I think I was using DH back in the dark ages of Usenet, but it's always grated on me, just as txtspk continues to do. I think it must be my age :D

bigbuttons · 24/08/2013 07:41

get over it.

TiredyCustards · 24/08/2013 07:53

Ds, dd, dh, dp I use, but dsil, dfriend, ddad, ddog are a bit silly imho.

fluffyraggies · 24/08/2013 07:57

I have no particular feelings on it either way. I just read the post and think about the subject.

I do wish posters would put DP (partner) instead of DF to mean fiance though. I find choosing the term fiance over partner very twee tbh. And as an abbreviation it gets mixed up with father and friend easily, as has been mentioned.

eurochick · 24/08/2013 07:58

I hate it. I've never used it once and I have been on here a good while at this point. The patronising "Ah bless, a newbie" comments are rather silly.

I find it odd that MN prides itself on not being twee (unlike the huns) and then adopts these short forms.

It doesn't take long to type "husband" or whatever so I will continue to do that.

exoticfruits · 24/08/2013 08:00

It took me ages to work out DT which was twins.
