Something is metamorphing on my car door! WIBU to move it?

Yesterday when I got home I noticed this little bug on my car door. I took a picture to see if I could identify it, but forgot about it.

This morning I got back from town and realised it was still there - but now it looks like this. I think it's a ladybird.

So should I try to take it off and put it somewhere more sensible? (Like on my rosebush? Or, seeing that it's apparently survived several miles driving around town, is it so firmly fixed that if I take it off I'll damage it and kill it? And does anyone know how long ladybirds take to pupate?

I would leave it where it is, and take pictures every day. Ladybirds can take up to two weeks to finish the pupal stage.

Wow, that's amazing.

AKAK81 · 21/08/2013 13:30

I'd be more concerned about potential damage to your paintwork.

Being that bright colour on your silver/grey car it'll most likely get eaten by a bird.

(Like my lovely Cabbage White Butterfly caterpillars- we had at least 5 batches of eggs. They hatched. Baby 'pillars. Then nada. They have gone)

TheSlug · 21/08/2013 13:42

Wow, that is incredible! I think it is a ladybird too, but I've never seen it in this stage before (only baby stage from first picture) and adult stage of course. I would leave it and take pics every day!!

RustyBear · 21/08/2013 14:56

Two hours later, it's now sticking out at an angle from the car and has more spots It might not manage to stay on at 30 mph at that angle. I probably won't need to use my car for a day or two, so I'll leave it for now and see if it's still there tomorrow -I think a bird will probably get it though. Sad

I only learned that those little bugs (in your first picture) were baby ladybirds this year, from a 5 year old. I have since told many of my friends (also in their 40s) and they were amazed too.

RiffyWammal · 21/08/2013 16:18

I have seen those little bugs and never knew they were baby ladybirds! Shock

OP, can you construct some kind of cover for it until it develops, to protect it from birds and from blowing off when you drive? Maybe some kind of bottle lid sellotaped over it? (no idea if this would damage the paint, though)

MakeMineACafPow · 21/08/2013 16:25

That thing is hideous!!! All these creepy legs. I have just lost all fondness for ladybirds! Bleugh!!!

WowOoo · 21/08/2013 16:34

Wow. No idea what it is, but I've seen the first pic version before.

Secretswitch · 21/08/2013 16:38
