I like them reasonably gooey too, but it's the taste that's the problem and I fear there's no saving them now.

If it's any consolation I did the same thing OP. A batch of perfectly good Rice Krispie buns destroyed. I never thought it was possible to have too much butter and syrup, but I was wrong.

I did the same thing. DH said 'just melt some chocolate' but I was all 'oh no the Internet says golden syrup and butter'. Gooey ming.

No but it's not a good twang it's horrible, so sugary it's almost chemical.

I think so. Maybe a touch of butter if you don't like them to set really hard but the syrup is completely unnecessary and overpowers the lovely gooey marsy taste.
