to think that "bring your own drinks" in Indian restaurants refers to alcohol only?

We often go to an unlicensed Indian restaurant and I can't believe the number of people who bring their own soft drinks. Big bottles of Coke etc. I think this is really unfair. "Bring your own" clearly means alcohol only!

But in this case KelleyHopter you are allowed to bring your own drink ( which DO include soft drinks) but I would assume you are not allowed to bring your own food.

You're saying soft drinks are included in the byo policy. We're saying that if the restaurant sells.soft.drinks then why on earth would they want you to byo?

It's not equality you silly sausage.
A restaurant chooses not to sell alcohol. Why does that mean they then have to take a hit on soft drinks when licensed premises do not?

It's nonsensical and grabby.

Yes that is the crux of the argument.Of course I don't think the restaurant want you to do it.All I'm saying is if they say bring your own drinks and DON'T clarify it by saying they has to be alcoholic then you are perfectly intitled to take whatever drink in that you want.

ninja - if the sign said not food then you would byo food - but this says byo drink so if one hasn't been in that restaurant before to know that soft drinks are on the menu it is easy to mis-interpret.

as someone who doesn't frequent indians and has never been to a byo type place before I can definitely see why this would happen.

Ninja I have yet to see a restaurant with sign and ads which explicitly state you are not to take your own bread or side dishes.
So why aren't you doing that too.
Think of all that lovely money you could be saving!

If the restaurant DOSN'T have a sigh or tell you not to bring your own food then Yes you would be intitled to take your own food.It DOSN'T matter if soft drinks are on the menu,if it says bring your own drinks,you are well within your rights to bring whatever drink you want.

If it DOSN'T say you can't take in your own bread or whatever then why not? Although most restaurants I've been to have said no outside food.

TBH restaurants just need to make it clear. I once took a bottle of wine and a bottle of lemonade because I wanted to add some lemonade to my wine. They took the bottle off me when I got in. I was cross because they hadn't made it clear. They should say 'bring your own alcohol' not 'bring your own drinks'. I happily paid for lemonade from them to add to my wine but I had no idea they were even going to sell them!
