To think breakfast is important?

DS says I am being unreasonable, he is 11 and has a dx of aspergers.
This morning he presented me with a letter (he hates writing so i was quite chuffed by this!)

Please can we stop cereal for breakfast as i think it is NOT suitable for human consumption (or for that matter for animal comsumption). Any deal will do.
Love ds
PS it is also very boring having the same thing everyday
NOW PLEASE PUT THIS DOWN AND THINK!

Thing is we DO have cereal everyday (quick, easy, healthy?) but my brain knows not of alternatives.... His alternative today is to say i wont eat at all until lunchtime so he has had a glass of water and disappeared upstairs.

AIBU to say actually cereal is fine and stop moaning?
What do you have for breakfast? (i can honestly say i have had cereal almost everyday if my life so im a bit at a loss!)

(please be nice ive never started an aibu before!)

Title should have said aibu to think breakfast is important and that cereal is a good option, me and your sister and your grandparents have it every day and always have so quit moaning!

I eat toast for breakfast. Will he eat toast?

Sleepyhead33 · 18/08/2013 09:50

Scrambled/poached/boiled eggs and toast. yummy, fairly nutritious and filling.

Sleepyhead33 · 18/08/2013 09:51

Beans on toast

usualsuspect · 18/08/2013 09:51

Weekends I usually have a bacon sarnie.

HeySoulSister · 18/08/2013 09:52

He's right.... Cereal is rubbish. Which do you buy? Most are unhealthy

expatinscotland · 18/08/2013 09:53

I rarely eat breakfast. Have, bar one time when I was eating it, been a healthy size and enjoyed good health.

Not all people are suited to eating breakfast and, until recently, many people worked several hours in the morning before eating at all.

Sleepybunny · 18/08/2013 09:53

Blow his mind and make pancakes

Dilidali · 18/08/2013 09:54

We have continental breakfast, try that :)

Binkyridesagain · 18/08/2013 09:56

I only eat breakfast when I'm hungry, usually it's a piece of fruit or a yoghurt, sometimes scrambled egg or a bacon sarnie. Very very rarely eat cereal.

ClaimedByMe · 18/08/2013 09:56

I am with your son, cereal is boring, I do not like it in the morning but occasionally have a bowl before going to bed!

Toast, crumpets, fruit and yoghurt are all quick easy school morning breakfasts in this house. At the weekends, eggs (scrambled, poached, fried depends on what is fancied) bacon sandwiches, eggy toast sometimes even the full Scottish!

DragonsAreReal · 18/08/2013 09:56

I tend to buy brioche rolls and croissants, I usually have a melon cut up in the fridge or pineapple that they can have with yoghurt to.

Could not be arsed with the faffing about of cooking and the washing up early in the morning.

pop tarts are nice to if extremely sugary Wink

JulietBravoJuliet · 18/08/2013 10:01

I tend to have a banana for breakfast as it's not a meal I enjoy. Ds (7) is the same, but I insist that on school days, or days in the holidays when he's at sport club, he eats something before leaving the house. Weekends, he can skip if he likes and we tend to have an early lunch.

We usually have a range of cereals, as I like them for a snack or quick lunch if I'm rushing to work! We've currently got Cheerios, Weetabix, Sultana Bran and Porridge. Sometimes ds will ask for toast, sometimes a banana sandwich, sometimes omlette or scrambled eggs.

belief · 18/08/2013 10:02

Heysoulsister - me branflakes mostly, sometimes weetabix
Ds and dd - cornflakes or ricekrispies

All good suggestions everyone. What is the healthiest known breakfast option - ds used to have a banana as well but has refused for the last year (not suitable for earing in the mornings apparently!)

Dilidali - what do you have for your continental breakfast?

He is right! How about eggs? Protein and quick and easy? Or pancakes and bananas, or a bacon sandwich. Make him something different every day. Eggs are so quick. Doesn't take any longer to cook them than it does to toast a piece of break. Pancakes you just make the mixture the night before.

skaen · 18/08/2013 10:05

I stopped eating breakfast when I was your son's age and did a deal with my mum where I had a piece of fruit and glass of milk, or toast and milk. Now I make myself a 'latte'. Still rarely eat breakfast.

waltzingmathilda · 18/08/2013 10:06

No everyone wants to eat regimented meals. I don't, neither do the DCs. We tend to eat a brunch and an evening meal. It suits us. None of us could face food first thing in the morning.

Cereal is gods own filth, on that score I have to agree. Try scrambled eggs, toast, beans on toast, fruit, yoghurt, anything except the dried up scrapings from a rodents cage covered in sugar and milk.

gininteacupsandleavesonthelawn · 18/08/2013 10:07

Porridge (does that count as cereal?!) oatcakes and jam, toast and scrambled eggs, croissant, banana loaf, yogurt fruit and granola, toast and peanut butter, toast and cheese, boiled egg andsoldiers, bacon rolls at the weekend...

Iamsparklyknickers · 18/08/2013 10:07

Don't limit yourself to breakfast foods - there's nothing wrong with having a sandwich or wrap for breakfast.

I always fancied trying Miso soup for breakfast but never have (vegetarian.about.com/od/soupssalads/r/MisoSoup.htm)

Breakfast isn't my favourite meal I have to admit, for some reason it makes me feel a bit nauseous, I need a good couple of hours before my body is up for digesting things. A hot drink or 3 and I'm good till about 11am when I actually feel hungry.

frogspoon · 18/08/2013 10:08

Toast? Fruit? Yoghurt? Eggs? Croissants? Bagels? Beans?

Have you tried hot cereal? Either porridge, or adding warm milk to e.g. weetabix. Some people don't like cereal cold, but prefer it hot.

Crumbledwalnuts · 18/08/2013 10:08

Also hot chocolate - and even full hot milk coffee if he likes it and you allow? Banana loaf marvellous too (put nuts in?), ham sandwiches, and someone said beans on toast upthread. All great.

Crumbledwalnuts · 18/08/2013 10:09

Breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, dine like a pauper. !

ILetHimKeep20Quid · 18/08/2013 10:10

I'm a cereal addict, or was until recently. Was on holiday, all inclusive breakfast buffet style and it was plain to see all the doughy, squishy, overweight people queuing up for the cereal and pancakes. The lean, slim, healthy looking people (who were mainly not British) were eating fruit, tomatoes, cucumber, cold meats, boiled eggs. After a couple of days I switched to the more continental breakfast and felt great, not hungry again until about 1pm, whereas I usually struggle to get to noon without needing a mid morning snack.

trinity0097 · 18/08/2013 10:14

Having the same thing all the time can get boring. Easy alternatives might be:
Toast
Croissant
Pain au Chocolate
Beans on toast (just zap some in the microwave for a minute or so)
Bagel
Scrambled eggs
Granola and yogurt
Sausage sandwich (cook a few when you have the oven on the previous night and then zap in microwave to heat up)
Different choice of cereals.
Porridge
Toasted muffin
Savoury muffins (he could help make them!)
Bacon sarnie (just pop in oven for 20 min or so, not hard to do)

Weekend breakfasts for us are more of the mini full English type, rather than a dash off to school/work type.

SybilRamkin · 18/08/2013 10:20

Continental here too. Ham, salami and/or cheese with bread and sliced tomatoes and cucumber. People generally think it's a bit odd in the UK but it's totally normal in Hungary!
