To think breakfast is important?

DS says I am being unreasonable, he is 11 and has a dx of aspergers.
This morning he presented me with a letter (he hates writing so i was quite chuffed by this!)

Please can we stop cereal for breakfast as i think it is NOT suitable for human consumption (or for that matter for animal comsumption). Any deal will do.
Love ds
PS it is also very boring having the same thing everyday
NOW PLEASE PUT THIS DOWN AND THINK!

Thing is we DO have cereal everyday (quick, easy, healthy?) but my brain knows not of alternatives.... His alternative today is to say i wont eat at all until lunchtime so he has had a glass of water and disappeared upstairs.

AIBU to say actually cereal is fine and stop moaning?
What do you have for breakfast? (i can honestly say i have had cereal almost everyday if my life so im a bit at a loss!)

(please be nice ive never started an aibu before!)

What FredFred said.

The need for a hearty breakfast is a myth. Cereal is mostly shite.

I enjoy a kipper with a scrambled egg at about 11am.

DD eats shite before school.

I love cereal and could eat it for every meal, DS doesn't like it and won't eat it. Unless its one containing loads of sugar, which I won't buy

pooka · 18/08/2013 15:14

I don't eat first thing. Haven't since I was about 10.

Idea of waking up and eating straightaway makes me queasy. Will happily have something light at about 10 or 11. Today I had some cherries and Greek yoghurt.

Dcs all very fond of breakfast. Eat loads almost as soon as thy get up. So does dh. But my mum and brothers are the same as me.

McNewPants2013 · 18/08/2013 15:17

I normally don't eat till midday, can't stomach breakfast.

Viviennemary · 18/08/2013 15:22

It just sounds like he is sick of cereal. Those cereal bars are quite nice but are high in sugar and not that nutritious so I've read. But it might be a change for a while. Some nice ideas. Banana loaf sounds good!

ToysRLuv · 18/08/2013 15:43

Cereal can be a bit "stuffy". I'm used to a Scandinavian continental breakfast, i.e. bread or toast, boiled eggs, cheese or ham, sliced cucumber or tomato. Yum!

Alternatively, lightly salted porridge, cooked in milk or water. He can put in a spoonful if jam or honey for sweetness, but the Scandinavians and Scots just often have it savoury.

VoiceOfRaisin · 18/08/2013 15:44

I agree with your DS. Cereal is nutritionally suspect and we only eat it owing to advertising. The cereal contains loads of sugar and a lot of people over the age of about 6 yo can't digest raw milk.

What about toast and an egg?
Or porridge with sliced banana?
Or muesli mixed with Yoghurt?
Or fishfingers and baked beans (if you have 15 mins to cook)
Or fried tomatoes on wholemeal toast?

I think breakfast is important only if your DS is not eating lunch, and then it is vital.

ilikebaking · 18/08/2013 16:12

I agree with your DS cereal is vile, vile stuff.
But, saying that, I don't eat any 'breakfast' food. Toast, cereal, pastries, etc. I will eat hot 'breakfast food' like fry up, eggs, porridge occasionally.
I cannot function without a proper meal first thing in the morning and I mean a PROPER meal.
I plate up an extra portion of dinner, every night and have that for my breakfast. DH thought it was nuts, but has since accepted it and so do my parents and the ILs.
My favourite breakfast is on Mondays, when I (usually) get roast. But, this mornings spag bol with garlic bread was pretty nice.
Its fajitas for dinner tonight (boo to no roast!) so will have that for breakfast tomorrow.
Do not make DS eat more cereal, but do make sure he has something in him, there are so many studies saying how children need to have food in the mornings. A lot of grown ups skip breakfast and while that is an okay choice for them, you should not let your DS because you are responsible for him, and should really be making sure he eats. Once he is grown, let him eat or not eat, what ever and whenever he wants.

Latara · 18/08/2013 17:57

I love porridge with half a tsp sugar made with skimmed milk; followed by fruit and a Brew

For your DS there are lots of options; I suggest writing them down and giving him a choice as he sounds mature enough to choose sensibly.

BsshBossh · 18/08/2013 18:03

Terrific suggestions on this thread. belief have you asked DS what he would fancy eating in the morning?

justmakingdo · 18/08/2013 18:05

I rarely eat breakfast but if I do its usually scrambled egg, mushroom and tomatoes.
All microwaved in 6 minutes

TrucksAndDinosaurs · 18/08/2013 18:09

I had mashed avocado wrapped in ham slices at 10am.
Much nicer than nutritionally pointless cereal.

justmakingdo · 18/08/2013 18:11

I like avocado mashed on toast....mmmmm

BrianButterfield · 18/08/2013 18:14

Toasted sandwiches in a toaster maker are easy enough for him to make for himself and you can have all sorts of fillings that he might enjoy experimenting with.

If he's having cereal every single day, I can see why that would get boring.
Just the same as everything would if it was the same day in, day out.
Have some days of introducing different breakfasts.
Good ones would be:

  • boiled egg with toast 'soldiers' to dip in
  • toasted bagel with cream cheese -bacon or sausage sandwich
  • beans on toast
  • banana and a yogurt
  • croissants
belief · 18/08/2013 18:57

Brilliant suggestions everyone - i will start trying different breakfast options from tomorrow and will be asking him what he would like

My main consideration tbh is any alternatives must require little or no preparation and very little washing up!

OP posts:
StickyFloor · 18/08/2013 18:58

Malt loaf
muffins
brioche
biscuits

My kids had absolutely nothing for a few months and then I decided I would rather they had something sugary in them than nothing at all.

belief · 18/08/2013 19:13

Have just discussed this with ds and decided that:

Bearing in mind we never have the sugary cereals/ the ones aimed at children we dont think cereal is so bad. (well ds says he wouldnt mind it if he can have the milk and cereal separately)
Plenty of the suggestions up thread are worse - and will definitely not starve off hunger till lunch.

We are having porridge tomorrow which will. My main issue with having different options for breakfast is that i will have to think. I dont want to think early in the morning :o.

Or have more washing up which the porridge will cause!

I am really grateful for all the ideas :) Thanks all!

Porridge- put in a cereal bowl this eve with milk in fridge. By morning it will have soaked thoughly and you can pop in microwave for 1 min. Eat straight from bowl
Do the same larger bowl if for more people.
You can add raisens/ grated apple etc this eve and it will all soak in also. No prep or exta washing in morning

goodasitgets · 18/08/2013 19:34

If you have a blender
Hot milk, banana, honey or peanut butter, handful of oats
Really filling

belief · 18/08/2013 20:02

I love those suggestions!
I think anything with oats has to be good.

We havent got a microwave - my kitchen isnt tiny but not enough worktop space for a microwave

MelanieCheeks · 18/08/2013 20:28

Google overnight oats.

SPsTotallyMullerFuckingLicious · 18/08/2013 20:34

Give him left over pizza from the night before. It will blow his mind!

That's the only time I eat on a morning. I even save pizza for the morning.
