to wonder what on earth my family do with kitchen roll and toilet paper?

2 weeks ago I bought 18 rolls of toilet paper and 8 kitchen rolls.

I went to get some toilet roll this morning to discover we had not one sheet left. How where has it all gone? No one has been ill. There are only 4 of us and one is in nappies and we use wet wipes on him.

Same applies to kitchen roll. I have about 3 sheets left.

They were good quality - andrex and plenty. Seemingly the ftist is not unbeatably long (or whatever claim their adverts make now) and the second is not plenty.

So where has it gone? Looks at DD suspects craft projects......

There are only 3 of us here and one in nappies and same thing.

I think DH eats it or something.

My dad got a bee in his bonnet about this when we were little and started telling us how many squares were needed for each toilet "job" lol! If mum hadn't stepped in he'd have rationed it by standing outside the door and pushing the required amount underneath!

PenguinBear · 16/08/2013 10:22

We are the same here. I blame DP, he uses about half a roll each time he goes to the loo, it drives me nutty!

meganorks · 16/08/2013 10:25

Well maybe they are like my DP. Was appalled to spot him using kitchen roll. He wraps it round and round his hand several times then give whatever he is clearing up one wipe and chucks it! So he usually uses 3 or 4 sheets of kitchen roll where 1 would do. He apparently does the same with bog roll.

Wtf!

twofingerstoGideon · 16/08/2013 10:34

I seldom buy kitchen roll for this very reason. What does kitchen roll do that (washable) j-cloths don't? I think it's wasteful and environmentally unfriendly.

FannyMcNally · 16/08/2013 10:40

First of all change to value/basic kitchen roll. My local Tesco appears to have stopped selling their own brand but Sainsbury's are 2x100 sheet rolls for £1.25. They might not be such good quality as Plenty etc. but with our families using it like it's going out of fashion it's a must. I've had to insist with the dds that you use ONE sheet and if you need another THEN rip another ONE off not just keep unravelling until the spindle stops Hmm

Toilet rolls are a complete mystery. I use some Andrex thick stuff that doesn't need handfuls for each wipe but try telling that to the McNallys!
Each day there is a lonesome empty roll waiting for me to replace. I feel your pain.

pianodoodle · 16/08/2013 10:44

Yes I bought brand name loo roll thinking it would be a saving as it wouldn't get used as quickly. Wrong.

Then I changed to basics loo roll but in DH's own words "my wallet says yes but my arse says no" Hmm

NaturalBaby · 16/08/2013 10:54

My family and friends know the kitchen roll is rationed - I have flannels and cloths which get used for cleaning up and go in the wash with the tea towels. We hardly ever buy kitchen roll, what do people use it for??

Dc's have been instructed to only used 2 squares of loo roll per wipe and DH tries to go to the loo at work as we have a septic tank so that's his money saving measure!

farrowandbawl · 16/08/2013 10:59

I thought this this morning, went to put yet another empty loo roll in the bin and found another 5 in there...it was emptied less than 1 1/2 weeks ago. It's not as though you can supervise them to make sure they only use so much at a time or just 1 square SAS style.

FannyMcNally · 16/08/2013 11:00

We use kitchen roll for drying our hands in the kitchen before touching food. I can't guarantee the freshness of the hand towels in the kitchen after watching dd3 dry the dog on it! We also use them for covering stuff in the microwave, mopping up work surfaces, touching raw meat, soaking up fat when cooking, serviettes, oh the uses are endless! Grin

ClaraOswald · 16/08/2013 11:11

Piano- to which my response would be "tough shit" Grin

or he can be responsible for buying it. See the usage come down when they actually see how much it costs.

I did this with my DH and cheese. He used to get through tonnes of it. I asked him one evening to get his usual cheese, some bread and some milk and crackers on the way home and he came in with a tiny square of cheese and looking pale.

thebody · 16/08/2013 11:13

3 men in our house dh and 2 dss. we go through a load of bog roll. they must polish their arses with it.

pianodoodle · 16/08/2013 12:10

clara that's a good idea. I mentioned on another thread that DH was working out our outgoings and thought groceries were about £25 a week... Pahahaha!

Jan49 · 16/08/2013 12:17

There's 2 in our house and we get through about 1 toilet roll a day. But we use a lot less kitchen roll, maybe one a month or so.

ClaraOswald · 16/08/2013 12:27

One a day???????

There are 2 in our household. We get through 3 a week, with two toilets!

Ginocchio · 16/08/2013 12:36

Clara surely the number of toilets doesn't increase consumption, though? After all, there are still the same number of arses...?

ClaraOswald · 16/08/2013 12:38

One roll upstairs and two downstairs.

Jan49 · 16/08/2013 12:43

One of my neighbours says the toilet roll use in their house increased considerably after they installed the second toilet.Grin

We've only got one toilet. But I work from home and my ds is a student and home a lot. So we use our own toilet during the daytime instead of elsewhere.

HappyMummyOfOne · 16/08/2013 13:55

I get through tons of kitchen roll as hate cloths. Its great for cleaning especially with pets. Id give up a lot of things in the kitchen before kitchen roll.

jaabaar · 16/08/2013 14:29

I am a guilty one here.... Use tons of toilet paper, can't help it...

chesterberry · 16/08/2013 20:48

I live on my own and a roll of toilet paper usually lasts me most of the week. I go through maybe 5 in a month. When I lived with ex-P we would go through 3-4 rolls a week, I have no idea what he was doing with it. I just don't get how people can get through so much.

thefuturesnotourstosee · 16/08/2013 22:34

I asked dp.

He said he uses it for wiping his bum, blowing his nose, wiping DS's face, cleaning his ears Confused, and wiping the bldy basin after shaving.

I asked DD. She looked at me as if I was stupid and calmly informed me that when she had 4 friends round last week and they all disappeared so quietly and nicely to her bedroom for a couple of hours they took lots of kitchen roll and did chromotography experiments (seperating out different colours in felt tips by colouring kitchen roll then wetting it)

So now I know. Sigh.

I stopped buying kitchen roll as I was fed up at how quickly we used it. Now we just use washable cloths and I wonder how we ever used so much of the stuff!

Andro · 17/08/2013 00:13

DD(6) is the toilet paper demon in the Andro house - she goes to the toilet half as much as her brother yet uses 3x the loo roll...go figure!
