to want to call the woman who has used my email address to order stuff again?!

Someone who has the same name as me keeps using my email address when ordering online. She registered with one company in July so I called the co to get them to inform her and also to check there was no fraud involved.

There's been quite a few more since then (about ten retailers). Today she's used my email to register with a different retailer. This time there's a phone number and her address on the confirmation email.

I rang the retailer to ensure no fraud but right now I want to ring her up and say stop using my email address please! Am I being unreasonable to expect my email address not to be used by a random stranger and to want to tell them to stop it? Kind of a WWYD but it's driving me nuts.

TBH if I was you I would worry about it happening the other way round and her receiving my personal info etc - so why not just change your email address?

WorraLiberty · 15/08/2013 20:36

Just ring her

But be polite because it's probably something as simple as she's forgotten a dot between names.

DrHolmes · 15/08/2013 20:37

I am getting this too but its with an american woman. I have seen her pics and i get e-mail notifications of her subscribing to card payment systems for bills and motorways and stuff! Very annoying!

Yes, i'd call her!

HooverFairy · 15/08/2013 20:37

I'd ring! She clearly doesn't realise, you'd be doing you both a favour, plus her name and address have been sent to a stranger. If it was me which it very well could be I'd want to know.

kali110 · 15/08/2013 20:37

Could be an accident if there was nothing dodgy. She prob forgot to put a number in the email address.you could contact her but id probably just set up a new email!

kungfupannda · 15/08/2013 20:38

Do you know what her actual email is? If so, drop her a friendly email, pointing out her mistake and asking her to correct it. If she's remotely sensible she will probably change her email address or be more careful in future.

FreeWee · 15/08/2013 20:46

See if you were feeling naughty you could have some fun with this subscribing her to junk mail and spam texts to get your own back or you could do the sensible thing and ring her and tell her she's been getting her email address wrong

Vatta · 15/08/2013 20:47

I'd ring her, she's probably just typing in her email wrong and not realising. Simplest way to let her know would be to ring her.

alwaysinamuckingfuddle · 15/08/2013 20:48

If she is using her own credit card/address/telephone why on earth would she do that? Bizarre!

Not sure what to say really except to contact companies directly and tell them she has input the wrong email address and to delete it off their system?

SaucyJack · 15/08/2013 20:49

It's probably something as innocent as you're at hotmail.com, and she's hotmail.co.uk or similar.

Ring her up and politely point it out. You'll be doing her a favour too.

Skaramoosh · 15/08/2013 20:50

I'd email her rather than ring, if you know what her actual email address is.
I have the same issue as someone with my name has a hotmail.com account and mine is hotmail.co.uk - I get work emails meant for her and my DP has emailed her more than once instead of me, I would change my email address but have had it many years and feel it would be more hassle!

DwellsUndertheSink · 15/08/2013 20:54

are you using googlemail? If so, the gmail system does not pay any mind to punctuation in email addresses: to Dwellsunder@ gmail is the same as dwells.under@ and DWeLls.Un.DeR@

She may therefore be using what she thinks is her account, but actually she has mistyped it. SO she may be Dwellsunder1@

I nearly had kittens when I thought some of my private stuff was heading to one of the other people with my name. But 'twas not,

WorraLiberty · 15/08/2013 21:42

That's true Dwells

I was thinking of gmail when I said it could have been a miss placed dot.

Rainbowshine · 15/08/2013 22:02

Thanks everyone. I don't have her email so I will call her tomorrow once I am less wound up by it. It is googlemail address as it happens!

Googlemail is shite like that. I used to have an address with them and got a few emails that I assumed were just wrong email addresses. One was about organising a funeral Sad

NewAtThisMalarky · 15/08/2013 22:07

I gave up on gmail for this reason. Its quite shocking Imo that it still goes on.

TerracottaPie · 15/08/2013 22:37

Is she near enough to rock up at her house and ask her in person to stop using your email?

I'm pretty sure that would work :o

WorraLiberty · 15/08/2013 22:38

Yes I had two gmail addresses that were very similar

So say one was worra.liberty@gmail etc....and the other was worraliberty@gmail etc

I'd get replies sometimes sent to the wrong address - ie the one I hadn't sent the email from.

DorisIsWaiting · 15/08/2013 22:43

I would ring her and let her know nicely that she must have incorrectly typed it as it has come to your account. I'd do it nicely but reiterate the fact that if you weren't so nice you could have had copies of bank details or receipts sent to your account (passwords etc..). I think in this scenario she is far more vulnerable than you.

kali110 · 15/08/2013 22:59

Omg i have a gmail account i didnt realise!did companies actually take any notice when you told them?im shocked by that cz of data protection laws.

DwellsUndertheSink · 16/08/2013 08:05

just to reiterate, unless you got your gmail account in beta phase, there are no duplicaton addresses - so you can sign on to your gmail account using any random punctuation, and it will always take you to your own account, as long as the letters stay the same. Numbers are different, but dwells.under@ and dwellsunder@ and DW.ells.un.der@ are all the same address. Your mail is not going elsewhere the people sending the emails are sending them to the wrong account, possibly because the other person has typed it incorrectly.

gintastic · 16/08/2013 08:11

I've been having this as well, my email is [email protected] - now out of the blue I'm getting emails addressed to [email protected] in my inbox?

How is that possible?!? One was from Playstation Network - I emailed them to let them know, and cc'd the 'wrong' email in - but the cc'd email ended up in my inbox?

Am v confused...

CaptainJamesTKirk · 16/08/2013 08:18

This happened to me...
Lady had the same name I was .co.uk, she was .com.

The first time I emailed her but it continued. I knew where she lived and when her Asda shopping was going to be delivered. She sent me a 'ooppps LOL, sorry' email but it continued! She finally stopped when I sent her a strong email telling her to be careful because from her work address she forwarded me an email about her daughter and her daughters school. I explained in my email that I knew her name, where she lived, where she worked, her daughter's name, her daughter's school etc... And that she needed to be more careful with her personal information. It stopped after that.

I agree with most - ring her.

She MAY have entered it wrong in purpose so your email clogs up with junk circulars when companies sell on email mailing list etc, and not hers. Just a thought....
