I don't know why, but spaghetti just tastes the best. A good old spag Bol. Not with penne or pasta shells or bows. Spaghetti it must be.

No Italian would eat spag bol? Next you'll be saying they don't put cream in carbonara...

nokidshere · 15/08/2013 16:38

Taglietelle or Fusiili here

miffybun73 · 15/08/2013 20:34

Do people really put cream in Carbonara??!! Sounds revolting.

I use this recipe for Carbonara, but keep the garlic in rather than discarding. uk.phaidon.com/the-silver-spoon/recipes/2010/april/22/spaghetti-carbonara/

Annunziata · 15/08/2013 20:43

I'm sorry but cream in carbonara is awful...

Olive oil, egg, pancetta and black pepper.

I have a friend who puts black pudding in hers!

OnTheBottomWithAWomensWeekly · 15/08/2013 21:27

If you put cream in it, it isn't a carbonara, you'd need to call it something else.

AlpacaPicnic · 15/08/2013 21:39

I eat my 'bol' with rice, with penne, with chips or on toast...

but rarely with 'spag'!

And I also put soy sauce on top of mine...

EmmaBemma · 15/08/2013 21:39

No cream in carbonara here. And i used linguine, not spaghetti. I do put pecorino romano in - not much, as it is very salty. And no olive oil, apart from the small amount I use to fry the pancetta in, which gives off loads of lovely fat as it browns. I then toss the pasta in that before I add the egg and cheese.

EmmaBemma · 15/08/2013 21:42

That Silver Spoon carbonara looks a bit claggy to me! I know that's probably heresy, but still. I like mine to have a slightly silkier, looser consistency.

Snatchoo · 15/08/2013 22:08

Only six months ago I would have disagreed and said penne was the way to go.

But I've gone off penne, it's spaghetti only now. Which pisses DH off because he doesn't like it (philistine).

starfishmummy · 15/08/2013 22:25

Penne or um some other fancy share I get from time to time nut can't remember the name of. Spaghetti or linguine are too messy and won't fit in the jar I have allocated to past storage!!

starfishmummy · 15/08/2013 22:25

Shape

starfishmummy · 15/08/2013 22:26

(oh bugger)....but

Jux · 15/08/2013 22:37

YANBU. And for the record, bolognese is vile with linguine.

Sparrowlegs248 · 15/08/2013 23:04

Fusilli. Easy to eat.

ShadowsCollideWithPeople · 16/08/2013 00:37

Grin Jolleigh. Hope you enjoyed your bolognese and crusty bread. I had the same tonight, and ate it whilst watching season 1 of Black Books. Was awesome. Thanks for putting the idea in my head! Ha, I love the smell of raw meat, when I made lasagne last week DP walked in to the kitchen to find me sniffing the mince Blush. I fully admit to being a weirdo!

I have to say, IMO cream never belongs in a carbonara. The absolute best carbonara I have ever had was in a Christian Brothers house in Rome that my family goes to for lunch every time we are there. Their housekeeper makes it in the traditional way, with just pasta, eggs, pancetta, pecorino and a bit of starchy pasta water. It is pure heaven, ludicrously delicious. Cream would just make it all heavy and slimy.

ShadowsCollideWithPeople · 16/08/2013 00:39

Well, actually, I'm not sure if it's the traditional way or her traditional way, but it is definitely cream free and bloody tasty!

CreatureRetorts · 16/08/2013 06:10

Alpaca you add soy?!!!

Oh and I love egg carb. Yummy.

Shadows - I enjoyed it very much. I didn't even think about black books! I watched his stand up Monster instead and very good it was too Grin

And now I have to drag my backside to work while craving bolognese...some things about pregnancy really are inconvenient!

I made loads though so just need to hold out to a normal hour Smile

LittleEsme · 16/08/2013 07:30

Spaghetti. Each time.

What is spag eating etiquette? Do you swirl onto fork and slurp up every strand, thereby dousing yourself and others in sauce droplets or do you fork, lift and bite thus allowing the excess spag to drop back onto the plate.

Someone please learn me Grin

Emilythornesbff · 16/08/2013 19:45

Lean over the bowl littleEsme
But DS uses both hands.

Jolleigh · 16/08/2013 20:03

Definitely lean over the bowl...no pasta-in-eye mishaps that way Wink

Emilythornesbff · 16/08/2013 20:45

And shovel it all in. Mmmmm.
