Just for example, and it annoys me every time I hear it,

Both Nirvana and Malcolm in the Middle were not big when you were little.

Nirvana was big in the late 80's/early 90's

MitM started in 2000.

Rather a lot of these make perfect sense, for exa mple " youre young, thats your fault" is fault as in a fhing that is wrong with you, not a thing you are to be blamed for. Gelatin is another word for gelignite, same thing. And i admire the woman in beeswing, even if she does end up a homeless alcoholic!

Nonsensical lyrics...what about smells like teen spirit, hailed as one of the greatest rock songs of all time? "a mulatto, an albino, a mosquito, my libido....a denial" What the fucking fuck are you chatting about?

Heartbrokenmum73 · 15/08/2013 00:52

YY to Land of Make Believe being creepy Talla!!

I've had to stop listening to it on my ipod because it gives me the heebie jeebies - not the way I remember it from being a child (shows age). And the child at the end - wtf is she talking about? A ghost? Too creepy!

UnitedZingDom · 15/08/2013 02:03

laura I don't know the song or the context you are referring to, but if it is a command/request for the Lady (questionable!) to recline, to rest or to become horizontal on the bed the simple present of the verb -lie- should have been used.

if on the other hand "Lady" is a hen and the singer is expecting fresh eggs for breakfast "lay on my big bed" is a grammatically correct sentence - revealing a slightly
eccentrical farming method.

Bit late Ipswich but on the radio here they said it was rugby Confused

Mawgatron · 15/08/2013 07:20

Love this thread! Was reading through it thinking 'do going to write about lady lumps' then someone else did!

But, no one has mentioned Rudebox by robbie Williams yet:
Ok then back to base heads, dance like you just won the special Olympics, I got the Rudebox at the back of the spaceship.
Hmm. Nice work there Williams, you bell end...

"Having said that, I was quite distressed when a wise MNetter pointed out to me that Macey Grey's word crumbles, rather than her wok wobbles when 'you' are not near. Sad times."

I always thought it was "I wear grobbles". No idea what they are!

Winter, Father and Son was not originally a Boyzone song! And "You're still young, that's your fault" - not using "fault" in a critical sense, but in the sense of flaw or issue/problem.

SPBisResisting · 15/08/2013 07:34

"Ambition and love wearing boxing gloves
And singing hearts and flowers "

Is it not A vision of love? I always thought it was about romantic notions of love vs the reality. Hmmm

carlywurly · 15/08/2013 07:51

The one with "can you handle me the way I are" in it. Or arrrgghh as it makes me go..

VeryDullNameChange · 15/08/2013 07:52

No More "I Love You's" " by The Lover Speaks/Annie Lennox. Yes that's how they punctuate it, don't blame me.

SPBisResisting · 15/08/2013 07:54

lol at arrrrrgh :o

Dave Barry, an American satirist, held a poll through his column to find the worse song lyrics of all time.

McArthur Park won hands down.

Nirvana was big in the late 80's/early 90's

Nirvana were still big in the late 90s and early 00s, and to some extent the mid-00s.

They just didn't tour very much...

SPBisResisting · 15/08/2013 09:22

How strange! You're right then, that makes no sense

superlambanana · 15/08/2013 09:29

Ooh while we're on the subject of bad grammar, may I suggest Take That's The Flood, with 'There was more of them than us'? Now I like TT, but every time I hear this I have to sing 'were' really loudly to drown it out Angry

Winter123 · 15/08/2013 09:33

Thanks SPB you've cleared up that then! Me and my brother used to be so confused at this when we were little... I suppose we were taking it too literally! Smile

Novemberish · 15/08/2013 09:33

Midge Ure - If I was...

If I were Midge. Were.

Still, at least my old French teacher was able to compare this against "If I were a Rich Man" as an example of correct and incorrect usage of the subjunctive tense.

LauraChant · 15/08/2013 09:52

Onthebottom - yes I can see how she is admirable, I just feel in real life I would not be thinking "yay, escaped those patriachal chains for a life of hard weather and hard booze" but "actually getting a few acres dug and some babies on the rug sounds quite nice". Grin

I love the idea of Lay, lady, lay being about a hen.

SamuelAndOscarsMummy · 15/08/2013 10:01

I was born in 1988 so both were big when I was little lol! Nirvana when I was about 2 and Malcolm in the Middle when I was 12 ;) I was a very little 12 year old too, just to be pedantic!

SamuelAndOscarsMummy · 15/08/2013 10:01

I think the girl singing the song is about my age too so it's also correct for her!

BoyFromTheBigBadCity · 15/08/2013 10:20

I thought Britney was saying 'taste of a poision paradise'?

LauraChant · 15/08/2013 10:25

Oh really, Boy? I guess I must be over thinking it! Sorry Britney!
Blush

UnitedZingDom · 15/08/2013 10:31

I also hate it when anyone under the age of 20 sings/says anything like "my whole life" or "in all my life"

it's technically correct up to that point, but it irritates me so much
