To find the "breast cancer awareness" Facebook status thing unfunny and stupid?

As far as I'm aware no breast cancer charity supports this and it's no better than a chain letter. If you want to help prevent cancer, give money to a charity. Last year it was appalling as the status updates could mislead friends and family into thinking you were pregnant, and this year it's all about getting them to think you are about to take an extended trip abroad. At best it falls flat, and at worst it could cause real upset.

*Miami. See, the rage even affects my proof reading skills!

I posted a (admittedly slightly ranty) FB status when the pregnancy one was all over FB, just asking that people take a moment to think about how they would feel if they had fertility problems and saw all these posts popping up all over the place with people "joking" about being pregnant. I then linked to a breast cancer awareness charity. I got torn apart. I lost a FB friend who thought it was a personal attack on her for posting the pregnancy thing Hmm. Several people said it's just a bit of fun and it's nice to do something to raise awareness - I don't see how it's promoting awareness if you just post a vague status and don't tell anyone what it's actually about. One person said I should lighten up, she had fertility problems and it doesn't bother her...well my best friend had been trying for years. These posts were really upsetting her.

Basically lots of people got very annoyed with me. I don't regret it one bit.

I can't stand the '97% of you won't share this, but I know the ones that will'. Like if you aren't an idiot who falls for chain mail you don't care.

Weasleyismyking · 12/08/2013 10:33

"I would rather people checked their tits one timeit takes them to update their statuses with loltastic rubbish like that."

^^ this. If the message people put on their status actually related to this it would raise awareness. It could go round once a year and be something as simple as "I've had a feel" or "checked".

I really liked the very first one that went round. It was the colour of your bra with no explanation. It was brand new and had people talking, then it all came out and made the press so did raise awareness by instigating conversation. That was the last year that it worked though.

i had a PM as soon as it said right girls it is that time again i didnt read any further, this is pointless and I don't understand why people do it, if you want to raise or support charity bloody get of facebook and do it, passing on your bra size or whatever is just showing you as a sheep do something more productive imo ,

sorry that turned into a rant it just annoys me Angry

mrsjay · 12/08/2013 10:38

the like ones of children with cancer or a disability are tasteless trills I agree with you like if you thnk this little girl is pretty beautiful blah blah gets on my wick

TheMagicKeyCanFuckOff · 12/08/2013 11:51

I hate the ones where you need to show you are against child abuse, for example. Because nobody is going to stand up and say, hey, I support child abuse, so I won't put a picture of a cartoon on my profile. So it spreads.

mrsjay · 12/08/2013 11:53

I reported a photo of child abuse on facebook it was a viral picture of a child being hit and the tag of lets stop abuse of children, this is actually exploiting children further and doesn't help

MalcolmTuckersMistress · 12/08/2013 12:12

I do hate this. Along with the shared sickly pictures with stupid sayings over the top.

Share this update if you think bears shit in the woods. Let's raise awareness of bears shitting in the woods and help eradicate it.

I feel stupid now as I liked a status which read 'I am going to Paris for 3 months' - the person who wrote it works in PR and it is the sort of thing she would do for her job. I do feel a bit foolish. I hate all this stuff too.

toolonglurking · 13/08/2013 12:13

Its annoying and stupid and a great way to get me to block you from my news feed and quietly judge your idiocy!

neddle · 13/08/2013 13:32

It annoyed me, because the first one I saw was from an Australian cousin who I'd never met. Said she was going to Paris, so I thought we might get to meet.
I felt really stupid when her friend laughed at me on the status.

Sunnymeg · 13/08/2013 14:38

These type of things also perpetuate the myth that breast cancer only effects women as we are the only ones who need to be in on the joke. I'm a breast cancer survivor and I had my chemo sessions with a lovely chap who was early 40's with two children. Sadly his cancer wasn't caught early and he didn't make it. If we do anything we should raise awareness that men can and do get breast cancer as well.

Doubtfuldaphne · 13/08/2013 17:11

Don't forget the worst one - where you leave your handbag in the house. Must start with 'I like it on..'
Nearly all my fb friends had 'I like it on my dining table' 'I like it on my bed'
Absolutely stupid and raises nothing for breast cancer.
