To find the "breast cancer awareness" Facebook status thing unfunny and stupid?

As far as I'm aware no breast cancer charity supports this and it's no better than a chain letter. If you want to help prevent cancer, give money to a charity. Last year it was appalling as the status updates could mislead friends and family into thinking you were pregnant, and this year it's all about getting them to think you are about to take an extended trip abroad. At best it falls flat, and at worst it could cause real upset.

Oh! I thought an acquaintance was going to Miami for six months! Everyone else did too. She had loads of replies asking about it.

These things are like chain letters yes. Waste of everyone's time.

Tee2072 · 12/08/2013 07:30

I just posted this status. Feel free to steal:

------------------

All my bras are beige, I'm not going anywhere else on holiday this year or for an extended visit and I am certainly not pregnant.

That's right, it's Breast Cancer Awareness silly season again.

Do you want to raise awareness about breast cancer?

Donate to an actual breast cancer charity with either time or money.

Sponsor someone who is doing Run/Walk for the Cure. Or run/walk yourself.

Posting something idiotic on your Facebook status does nothing but make you look, well...idiotic...

------------------

And then put a link to Run For The Cure.

MalcolmTuckersMum · 12/08/2013 07:35

Thanks Tee. Doing that right now to hopefully warn my selection of fuckwits off before any of them start! My mum is a BC survivor and I know the hideousness of this disease - anyone who trifles with that reality is going to find out just exactly how very fucking unreasonable I can be. Smile

ThisIsMySpareName · 12/08/2013 07:47

Oh - so that's what it is all about. So does that mean my SIL isn't going to the other side of the world for 12 months?

I agree complete load of tosh.

Isabeller · 12/08/2013 07:52

Is there a uk Run for the Cure?

fluffyraggies · 12/08/2013 08:00

Really? Confused

What is wrong with folks?

This is all one more reason why i'm utterly content to be a non Face Book'er.

Tee2072 · 12/08/2013 08:04

Race for Life Isabeller.

SamHamwidge · 12/08/2013 08:11

Hate the picture of (for example) child with DS and 'share if you think she's beautiful'. That sort of thing . I find it patronising and offensive.

swampytiggaa · 12/08/2013 08:14

If i see these from friends i respond by asking why they are posting pointless rubbish pretending to raise awareness of breast cancer. Oddly enuf since i pointed out how sexist and pointless they are people have stopped posting them. And i don't care if people defriend me over it.

I had to hide one person as i got fed up with all the 'like if you are against cancer/animal abuse etc. They just cluttered my feed and gave me the rage.

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 12/08/2013 08:26

Thank you Tee, I've nicked that
Havent had any yet that I've noticed, but best to nip it in the bud before it starts Grin

thegreylady · 12/08/2013 08:43

I have had breast cancer. It isn't pink. It isn't fluffy and it certainly isn't funny! As for "Don't tell the men!" Without my dh I would have died during chemo and without my male oncologist and male surgeon I'd have died anyway.
If you want to help with BC research donate to one of the charities. If you want to 'fight' BC check your breasts, have your mammograms that's how to be aware. I hate the fb nonsense.

primallass · 12/08/2013 09:09

I refuse to do the stupid facebook things. Instead I get off my (fat) arse and walk a marathon every year to raise money.

MrsMook · 12/08/2013 09:20

There's lots of other cancers that need awareness and research, some gender specific (cervical/ testicular) and some that don't care what sex you are. There's plenty of other nasty diseases that need research and awareness too.

Sharing some pap on FB isn't doing anything constructive about any of these conditions.

Pigsmummy · 12/08/2013 09:32

The current message doing it's rounds on my FB is to put a heart in your status. I haven't done it, it isn't breast cancer research week, it's a stupid chain mail message. What is the point?

PurpleKittyKnitting · 12/08/2013 09:40

I hate the fb status garbage too, I've seen the TV ad a few times and not keen on it. Surely they do some sort of research on adverts to see how well they will be received?

I was very tempted to choose a destination not on the list and update my status with the fact that I am going to say Blackpool for 5 weeks or something but realised it was a bit childish!

FrancesDeLaTourCoughngIntoABin · 12/08/2013 09:45

Sorry what is the point of the travelling thing?
Not seen these statuses yet

PurpleKittyKnitting · 12/08/2013 09:47

Exactly it really serves no purpose at all

FrancesDeLaTourCoughngIntoABin · 12/08/2013 09:50

can someone explain what they say?

StuntGirl · 12/08/2013 09:51

Its something like the month and day you were born equate to a place and a time on the list. So there are posts like "I'm going to Miani for 22 months!"

I'll be honest I skimmed over the explanation when she sent it to me. As soon as I saw what it was the rage started boiling over Grin

AnyOldFucker · 12/08/2013 09:52

I haven't seen the pg one

I just don't get it at all and I know I am not thick

FrancesDeLaTourCoughngIntoABin · 12/08/2013 09:52

Oh I see
Confused

FrancesDeLaTourCoughngIntoABin · 12/08/2013 09:52

I am obviously a man as I am on the outside being laughed at :o
