To find the "breast cancer awareness" Facebook status thing unfunny and stupid?

As far as I'm aware no breast cancer charity supports this and it's no better than a chain letter. If you want to help prevent cancer, give money to a charity. Last year it was appalling as the status updates could mislead friends and family into thinking you were pregnant, and this year it's all about getting them to think you are about to take an extended trip abroad. At best it falls flat, and at worst it could cause real upset.

I am sooo with you OP, I hate those and I'm a breast cancer survivor!

Unfortunately a lot of my friends keep doing it, often probably thinking of me. I cringe in silence and don't have the heart to tell them what I really think!

These are mostly intelligent and articulate women... Not sure hiw they get drawn into this kind of thing.

Doodledumdums · 12/08/2013 00:19

It's similar to that 'campaign' on FB a couple of years ago where everyone was supposed to change their profile picture to one of a cartoon character in order to raise awareness for child abuse. How on earth was that helping anyone?

AnyOldFucker · 12/08/2013 00:19

Winter, you are expressing yourself perfectly !

if you lose the "battle" against cancer, it's because you aren't kick-ass enough

right ?

fucking wrong

I'm another breast cancer survivor who doesn't get this whole Facebook status thing and also hates the 'kickass' advert.

CiderwithBuda · 12/08/2013 04:31

I hate them too. Just want to type "Just check your bloody breasts!" whenever I see one. But then I feel like a party pooper for some reason.

Panzee · 12/08/2013 04:45

I've only ever been sent a message about this once. My friends must know what I think of it. :o.

I'm a daughter of a breast cancer survivor. Medical research and wonderful support from Macmillan is what helped my mum. If all these people posting vague statuses gave a fiver...

I also hate the aggressive advert. Plus "Cancer, we're coming to get you", really? You're trying to get cancer? Grammar fail. :o

SunshineBossaNova · 12/08/2013 06:12

YANBU. It's nonsense on stilts, and sexist to boot.

I'm sure that kind of crap really helped my MIL deal with breast cancer Hmm

RichManPoorManBeggarmanThief · 12/08/2013 06:30

As soon as I open a message and see ' okay pretty ladies' ( vom) my immediate reaction is 'leave conversation', 'defriend' . I cannot deal with the triteness if it all.'

treaclesoda · 12/08/2013 06:35

oh, I'm so glad to see this, I hate all that pointless crap too, and can't believe how many of mh intelligent, articulate friends fall for it. One person I know posted that she was off to New York for three months, it got back to her boss and developed into such a row that she was lucky not to lose her job over the head of it. Like that would have helped breast cancer sufferers Confused

Trazzletoes · 12/08/2013 06:35

Doodle it actually led to me setting up a monthly DD to the NSPCC. I know it's not much, but they have a tiny bit of extra regular income from me - something that I doubt I would have done without the cartoon characters.

However, I appreciate I'm likely in the minority there.

Sondosia · 12/08/2013 06:38

Oh yes, sooooo annoying! And getting more annoying over time too, because the original one (bra colours) was at least vaguely related to breasts, but the whole pregnancy/going away statuses have got sod all to do with anything!

stillenacht · 12/08/2013 06:39

It annoys me with the 'lets keep it a secret from men'. My DFIL had breast cancer 4 years ago.

AntoinetteCosway · 12/08/2013 06:40

I don't even understand it. What's the point of the place and the length of time? Are they supposed to mean something?

Tee2072 · 12/08/2013 06:47

Oh god is it time for this fuckwittery again?

SunshineBossaNova · 12/08/2013 06:47

I also hate the statuses that read something like 'All children with want is to be treated normally for one day. Share if you agree.>

See also: soldiers meeting their dogs after being on tour, adults with a variety of conditions...

mrssprout · 12/08/2013 06:49

I have had these a couple of times, both times I replied in the private message about breast cancer not being secret women's business, men watch women partners & family go through it, men can get breast cancer & both times I was totally ripped to shreds by the "it's all a bit of fun" brigade. I have decided to ignore it if it appears again but I am glad to find others that agree it is a rubbish idea

Pawprint · 12/08/2013 06:52

I hate them too. The one where you implied you were pregnant was in very bad taste.

Isabeller · 12/08/2013 06:58

I am not on FB but DP said his sister had put something but it was about breast cancer and my reaction was 'men get breast cancer too' and Hmm even more so now I've read this thread.

i really dislike (being extremely polite here) the suggestion that someone who is not 'winning their fight against cancer' might somehow be not trying hard enough or not 'thinking positive'. The telly ad thing seems part of this attitude in my mind. In fact I could almost do a bit of ranting so I'll stop here.

MrsBungle · 12/08/2013 07:05

Yanbu. I think it's a stupid way to try and raise awareness. I don't even think it does raise awareness. And, to exclude men like this is immature and wrong. My dad and brother were extremely affected by my mum's cancer. It really annoys me. Don't even get me started on that ridiculous 'we are coming to get you' advert.

picnicbasketcase · 12/08/2013 07:05

Couldn't agree more. Giggling behind your hand at the bemusement of others not 'in the know' doesn't raise awareness of a fucking thing other than making people aware of what a twat you are.

MarshaBrady · 12/08/2013 07:11

I haven't seen it, but his ridiculous. Why are men a problem?

Gah that makes me cross. Because no woman has been supported through cancer by their husband, or partner etc.

And that advert was crap too.

MarshaBrady · 12/08/2013 07:11

Sounds ridiculous.
