To be stressed out about DD's name 8 months in?

(Namechanged for obvious reasons!)

DD is called Evie, I have loved the name for years, DP loves the name, and I wasn't to keen on any of the long versions. But from about 4 months onwards I have been getting ridiculously upset about it not being a "proper" name and how its going to affect her. I don't know why it kicked in then, I'd thought again and again about it during pregnancy and felt fine about it then because of there being lots of other Evies.

I wish I'd called her Evelyn, I don't think I'd have ever "called" her it, but I feel like I've doomed her to being stuck with a cutesy name and she's going to really resent me for it when she's older.
What do you think about it as a full name? Is she likely to hate it? There's not much I can do now but I can't stop stressing out about it.

I'm a real traditionalist for names. But you know what, I think Evie as a birth certificate name is fine.

I felt I had to have the 'proper' long version for DS2 despite the fact that he would only be known as the short version.
It just seemed right at the time.

He hates his long name.

He got really upset in year 1 when he saw his long name on his tray and books, he sat and sobbed quietly so his lovely teacher changed it all for him straight away.

He's old enough to understand now but sighs if anyone uses that name.

If your DD will only be called Evie, then keep it as Evie. It's a beautiful, stand alone name :)

I have an Evelyn , we call her Evey on a day to day basis. I only call her Evelyn when she's being naughty. It generally stops her in her tracks.. I'm happy with my choice of a long name on the bc and using a short name.

Do what is right for you, don't be swayed by anyone else's opinion.

Melanie- first cousins, both called David?! That's bizarre!

BlackholesAndRevelations · 12/08/2013 07:18

Ps the more I read this, the more I love evelyn/Evie!!

I know a few Evies, only one was Evelyn, though she was never called that unless she was in trouble.

frogspoon · 12/08/2013 12:11

Just to add to what I said earlier about Evie being popular, in stats released today www.ons.gov.uk/ons/rel/vsob1/baby-names--england-and-wales/2012/index.html Evie was the 11th most popular girl's name in England and Wales for 2012.

In case you are interested:

Eva was 24th

Evelyn was 57th

Evangeline and Eve were not in the top 100.

So you clearly made a good and popular choice!

bababoom, me too. Always called the pet name version, which is highly girly, with a proper name on the birth certificate 'to give me options'. Hated being called the full version all through school, dumped it with my old text books the day I left and have been happily using a girly pet name ever since ;) It feels like me, where all through school I was called by a name I didn't have any associations with at all. At the age of five I had a row with the headmaster of the primary school who had to get out the register and prove to me that yes, that really was my name.

Girly names don't make for girly people!

themaltesefalcon · 12/08/2013 14:50

I'd change it to Evelyn, formally, while you have time.

Madmum24 · 12/08/2013 14:55

I think that Evie is lovely and a cutsey name that fits all ages. I know Alfie's, Lewie's, Emi's, Rudi's and I don't think all of those names work past the early years.

At the end of the day it is up to you OP.

MistressDeeCee · 13/08/2013 03:08

Evie is such a lovely name. Far nicer than Evelyn. Just saying..!

alepetrucci · 25/08/2013 00:09

It's not too late! You can still change her name on the birth certificate (you don't even need a deed poll).

I think it's even free if you do it this way! Smile (You have to do it quick though, because once she's 1, it's no longer an option.)

Zombie thread I no but I would like to add ....
we registered our daughter Elizabeth always known as Betsy. It got to the point when she was 6 months that I really didn’t like that her name on her bc wasn’t her ‘ real’ name in our eyes as her parents she was our Betsy. So we changed it to the short version. I knew some people thought we were crazy but I hated t when we went to the doctors etc and she was called Elizabeth it didn’t seem her

makingmammaries · 08/08/2019 21:53

Evie is pretty and cute, but I also think it’s not a ‘birth certificate’ name. If you don’t like Evelyn (I don’t), there’s Eve, Evelina, Evangelina, all of which I think are gorgeous.
