If we talk we are being nosy, if we don't talk we are rude!

If we say hello we are being pushy!

We can't win :o

Absolutely bang on! littlemiss
But don't you just love all the perfectly well mannered customers that we serve Grin

30ish · 10/08/2013 17:12

I feel your pain - I'm a teacher. We never get it right either Grin

rottentomatoes · 10/08/2013 17:14

It's not really like that though is it? I think most staff are perfectly good at their job and occasionally a staff member will show a genuine interest in a customer and pitch it just right. There is a certain talent and art to that.

timidviper · 10/08/2013 17:14

I never cease to be amazed at the type of person who assumes that all shop staff are beneath them and can be spoken to like dirt.

JerseySpud · 10/08/2013 17:15

I was a nurse

Apparently we never got it right either.

itsnothingoriginal · 10/08/2013 17:15

Definitely a fine line I agree but a genuinely pleasant and interested member of staff can make my shopping experience so much nicer. John Lewis and m&s staff usually get it right!

Having worked in retail for quite a few years I know how hard it can be to keep a smile on your face with some customers though..

But have you recently told anyone they could not afford a handbag?

MissMuesli · 10/08/2013 17:19

There are good and bad in every profession which is what I remind myself! I personally like the chatty ones, and LOVE shop assistants that are nice to my friendly 2 year old! That is important to me.

Pawprint · 10/08/2013 17:24

Ha ha - Little; I guess you have read my 'pregnancy test check out guy witticism' thread!

It's true - there is a fine line. Personally, I like to chat with the checkout staff. I have worked in shops before and liked getting to know the customers. This guy was just being silly - he was just a teenage boy. I certainly wasn't going to complain and get him into trouble. He was probably being paid a bloody pittance.

As for the Oprah handbag scandal - I don't know what to make of it. Part of me thinks that Ms Winfrey was more peed off about not being recognised than anyone else.

And what is it with handbags? It seems to me that the more expensive the handbag the uglier it is.

Xihha · 10/08/2013 17:28

This is why I would never work in a shop, at least working in a pub I can tell people I think they are being a dick.

Have to say though I went shopping yesterday and got fantastic service in all the shops I went in, even whilst DD was being fussy and awkward, so those 4 shop workers had found the right balance at least.

Bruthastortoise · 10/08/2013 17:28

Try working in a jobs and benefits office - we are not only incompetent but also vary between rude and just plain evil.
