AIBU to think that I should be able to wear work uniform in my size?

Have namechanged to avoid outing myself.

I work in a job which has a uniform. We can wear any trousers/skirt, but have a polo shirt and sweatshirt with a logo on them. We have to wear these tops to work.

I have recently lost a lot of weight and gone down from a size 20 to a size 10. My work tops are now like tents on me. I asked if I could have some in a smaller size and was told that I couldn't until everyone had new tops (which won't happen in the near future). I offered to pay for new tops myself, but the company which embroiders them can't accept an order from anyone but the company, and my boss has vetoed it. She says that clothes that are too big are not a problem and that I don't need new tops.

AIBU to think that this is ridiculous?

I can understand them not wanting to pay out for new tops every time someone gains or loses weight as they will pay more per top on a small order, but since you have offered to buy your own I don't see the issue.. Work should ideally keep a few spares in all sizes for if anyone new starts etc

Surely that just looks scruffy and reflects poorly on the company!

I might be way off the mark here but is there a possibility your boss is jealous?

AKissIsNotAContract · 09/08/2013 15:17

Well done on your weight loss.

That is ridiculous. Are you in a customer facing role?

RegainingUnconsciousness · 09/08/2013 15:20

YANBU.

I used to work in several places with polo shirt uniforms and was routinely given a humongous one.

I eventually started asking if they would put a size 20 person in a size 10 shirt? Of course they wouldn't.

It's amazing how awful a badly fitting work shirt can make you feel.

Well done on your weight loss. I hope your employer can see reason.

Could you cut the embroidered section out and attaych it to a smaller top?

WilsonFrickett · 09/08/2013 15:25

What do they do when a new person starts, surely they must be able to do a one-off order? TABU

burberryqueen · 09/08/2013 15:26

that is a great idea mortified.
what would they do for a new recruit then?

WilsonFrickett · 09/08/2013 15:26

^^ That's they are BU, not a demand for a discusting 80s liquer.

KirjavaTheCat · 09/08/2013 15:28

Do you have a local embroidery/logo place? We have a few places that are happy to embroider company logos, you show them what you want and they do it. Failing that a lot of places online do this.

Could you possibly get a plain top and do that? They'd have no reason to complain providing you got a very closely matching top.

Justforlaughs · 09/08/2013 15:32

Is there a head office you can appeal to? Failing that I would wear something as close as possible to the uniform and if necessary, cut the logo off the original top and sew it onto the replacement. Very bad response from your boss. Sad
But VERY well done on your weight loss. Envy

Thank you. I'm so glad that nobody thinks IABU.

It is a small business, which is why I can understand that they can't afford to pay for new uniforms every verse end. But I don't see what the problem is with me paying for one myself.

The polo shirts are embroidered by a local company, and the order has to go in from my boss. So I can't get around it that way.

I have however found identical (plain) polo shirts on ebay and have just ordered some. I will then cut the logo off my old ones and sew them onto the smaller ones, that is a great idea.

I work there 5 days a week and it is soul destroying to wear clothes that are far too big for me every day, I feel like such a frump. They just order workwear in an XL as that is the size that everyone except me takes (and obviously I used to too).

Good for you on the weight loss. If everybody else takes XL maybe they are a bit jealous...
