Luckily my in laws are so thick that they don't really get most of it, the Sun is their bible.

I don't think the DM is particularly bad. It reflects its readership's views as does every other newspaper to a greater or lesser extent. Anyone who believes the Guardian to be a purveyor of unvarnished and unnuanced truth is as gullible as a Sun reader believing the same. The broadsheets are in general a little subtler and the red tops unbelievably blatant, with the Mail and the Express somewhere in the middle.

Personally I read the Times (mainly for the cryptic Xword and killer Doku) but I also read Private Eye and its "Street of Shame" column to keep me suitably cynical about all papers. Love reading the DM when it is lying in a coffee shop, though...

The Mail online today:
"Jennifer's Top flys low" and "Jennifer Hudson shows off her ample cleavage" A story about a woman with a low top that shows a lot of chesty substances.

"Enjoying the view?...Toni Garrn shows off her model figure in a black bikini" A story about Leo Decap's girlfriend wearing a bikini.

"Selena Gomez shows off her pins" You can see a model's legs when she's modelling.

Tulisa wears leather miniskirt to friend's party. Lots of pictures.

"Could this be the answer to sunburn?" With picture of lady in bikini rubbing lotion onto skin.

Jenna Dewan-Tatum "Flaunts her thin pins" (by wearing a skirt)

Chelsee Healey wears minidress to her 25th party. Lots of pictures.

"Bikin-clad model Leilane Dowding parades her incredible figure" by wearing a bikini on a beach and on a jetski. Lots of pictures.

"Kirstan Dunst shows off her super-toned physique in tight black gym gear." - Actress leaves gym not wearing a duffel coat.

Another "ample cleavage" actress.

Another "plunging white swimsuit" reality star.

Somebody"...shows off her fabulous legs..."

Another "....displays her toned midriff..."

"...Showing off her jaw-dropping cleavage..."

"...Toned midriff..."

"...shows off her svelte figure..."

"...shows off her fresh tan and endless legs..."

"...bares her toned midriff..."

They really do like midriffs at the mail don't they? All those quotes are from the lines accompanying photos of attractive female celebs. And we go on...

"Female lawyer swaps her wig and gown for a bikini..."

"...shows her racy side in plunging dress..."

"...shows of her 63-year-old bikini body..."

"...she dares to bare in sheer..."

"...photo of her pert bikini-clad behind..."

"Charlie Sheen poses with 3 topless women..."

"...is loud and proud...in a skin tight mini and thigh high boots..."

"...push up bra that can give anyone a cleavage..."

Acrtess "...flashes some side-boob..."

Actor "...shows off ripped abs and bulging biceps as he joins male topless selfie trend..."

"...shows off her dancer's legs in tight trousers..."

"...covers up her bombshell curves..." Don't worry! The Mail put an older picture up as well to remind you of what whoever it was' bombshell curves look like!

Actress "...shows off her sensational figure..."

"...flashes skin..."

"...pants that will give you curves like Kim..." With pictures of Kim showing her curves...

etc...

I am a journalist, although not at this end of the market, but I do have a couple of acquaintances who have worked for the Mail.

It's worth remembering it is not a newspaper. It is an editorial sheet. As such it is not really in its remit to report news in an unbiased manner.

It is an irritant, and very good at it. It is as much designed to outrage as it is to win nods of assent.

For exampleDo you honestly think Samantha Brick is ingenuous?

Its majority readership is women, split 5:3 between the ABC1/C2DE demo.

It is very good at what it does (sell newspapers by winding up its audience and drive traffic to its U.S.-focused website) and wins copious awards.

I'm not sure what the problem is? To anyone with even a halfarsed education it is obvious it is biased, so it can be ignored if your quest is for spot news.

TiggyD, when you put it like that.... OMG what a vile piece of steaming online turd. Reading it is like drinking poison to kill off any shred of self-respect or self-esteem you once had.

Pirate, just out of interest, why is your self esteem reduced after reading it. Why does it have that power?

It's not, Clare, because I don't read it. But then you don't get why the DM is a problem, so I don't have much faith in your ability to put yourself in the shoes of the many millions of women who ARE affected by this kind of bilge.

Report
clarequilty · 07/08/2013 10:30

Yes, but why does a newspaper or a magazine or an advert have any power to affect your self esteem? It's a genuine question.

I am able to try to put myself into another person's shoes. I would just like someone to explain how the process of exogenous imagery informs a person's identity.

Unless we are all narcissists....(another debate worth having)

I can't stand the Daily Mail. It's full of crap and the comments section is full of reactionary nutters. Rabid loony right wingers and woman haters.

But I think that Mumsnet is the opposite end of the same battery.

It is also full of reactionary nutters. Rabid loony left wingers and man haters.

It takes the hoiking of judgey-pants to a whole new level.

Everything is the direct fault of an "immigrant" (illegal if possible - although I suspect someone at the DM thinks all immigrants are illegal).

Nice women stay at home baking cakes & nurturing their DCs - however, they are also being selfish for not contributing financially to the household income. If they work, they are lazy & only doing so to avoid raising their own children.

Anyone who has ever claimed any sort of benefit is scum & undoubtedly "on the fiddle".

Need I go on?

The Sun has just started charging for on-line access, so you can't post links to it any more.
I'm hoping that the Mail will follow suit very soon.

I don't think the DM is particularly bad. It reflects its readership's views as does every other newspaper to a greater or lesser extent.

But how can any journo live with the fact that their writing attracts people with the sort of views expressed on MailOnline? Seriously, I've seen comments rejoicing at the death of children because they were asylum seekers. Despite the fact that their rules forbid racism, their moderators seem entirely happy to let overtly racist comments be published. To say nothing of the very sad misogynists who never miss an opportunity to slag off women, and the damaged types who salivate over the notion of corporal punishment for children.

As for that Littlejohn column where he said that the deaths of five murdered prostitutes really didn't matter: how can anyone bear to be associated with a paper which thinks it's OK even to print that, let alone to continue to pay a fortune to the piece of scum who churned out?

DM is lightweight rubbish.
I occasionally read it coffee shops etc and after a few pages it just irritates me.The opinion columnists in particular come across as being narrow minded.
So many reasons not to read it.
I much prefer the Times.

Quenelle · 07/08/2013 13:33

Because it encourages otherwise sane and reasonable people like my parents and my ILs to come out with statements like:

We can't even give a child a cuddle any more.
Well of course Big Ears was banned from the Noddy stories.
Men aren't allowed in playgrounds unaccompanied nowadays.
What is wrong with voting UKIP?
A woman who accuses Rolf Harris of rape must be lying.
Well your uncle is lucky because he has that mobility car - I can't have a mobility car - and he doesn't have to queue to go up the Eiffel Tower.

All true and yet its readership is mostly female. It is the only national newspaper that has more female reader than male.

I've never understood that.
