Okay this is more a cry for reading suggestions similar to the "Game of thrones" series. I am almost at the end of book 5, I started watching and reading the series in may and have been completely drawn in. admittedly this happens to me a lot but I have never read a series with such long books, normally I would read min of one book a week.
I read a wide variety of books and thanks to the amazing tuebl site have downloaded dozens for free but none are in this genre. So please if any one else has any similar recommendations please share.Smile

lampwick I could literally kiss you right now ! Orynx and Crake is one of my favourite ever books - how on earth did I not know about the sequel? My quest has ended !!

Nice to find lots of people with similar book tastes. This has all of my favourites and lots of new ones in :-) my kindle wish list is going to be significantly growing today ...

thegreylady · 06/08/2013 08:05

Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth series is wonderful. There are 7 I think. The first is called Wizard's First Rule. If you like Game of Thrones you will love these (I prefer them). Robin Hobbe also has several series again my favourites were the Mad Ship ones but they are all interlinked so you could go on and on with them. Have you read Anne McCaffrey's Pern books? I love The White Dragon.

FriedSprout · 06/08/2013 08:33

I totally understand your being unsettled when you come to the end of a series, it leaves me all out of sorts.

I recommend the following authors and series series, which should see you through the next few years or so:

Patrick Rothfuss Name of the Wind

Peter Brett Painted Man

Brent Weeks Night Angel Trilogy

And you will never, ever regret reading Lord of the Rings, forget the films just grab the books prepare to not resurface for several months, get supplies in and stash chocolate. See you next year Smile

Bernard Cornwell's Arthur books are excellent too with a touch of realistic magic (if there's such a thing!) Winter King, Enemy of God and Excalibur.

BitchyRestingFace · 06/08/2013 10:27

I knew this would be about Song of Ice and Fire before I clicked on it! I was absolutely bereft when I finished it (this was a few years ago and I am now nearing the end of a full re-read and feeling angsty again Grin ).

I found actually that trying other fantasy and sci-fi books straight after didn't work for me - they just felt "wrong" and inferior and made me hanker even more for Westeros. After trying a few, I decided just to go for something completely different and read The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins.

Some great recommendations above, though. I would also suggest that you might like John Connolly's Charlie Parker series. It's not fantasy or sci-fi or zombies, and fair warning, the first book is heavy going and a harrowing read, but the series as a whole is brilliant. He's the only author other than GRRM whose books I buy as soon as they come out, no question, don't care what it's about, just hit buy Smile

Gully girl, they are the books I mentioned earlier, I said they were from the voyager series but I think it's actually the outlander series. I love them and can't wait for the next one.
There are so many authors and books mentioned whom I never even heard of, it's opening up a whole new world of reading for me.Thanks

YY to Robin Hobb, David Eddings . Also if you like Ben Aaronovich you may like Benefict Jacka- Fated, Cursed, Taken and Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere.
The Dune series by Frank Herbert is brilliant too.
Try bestfantasybooks.com for some useful suggestions. They have lists of favourite books, voted for by the public.

Have finished Games of Thrones no 1! Was amazing! Have downloaded number 2 and only just started, paid for the second again cos it was only £3 and I had a voucher. So annoying that it doesn't start where the last one finished! Thank you again for the recommendations, love having a series that I'm only just starting.

Can anyone tell me what the tv series is like? I tend to not like screen adaptations, how would you get dragons to suckle with out it being really weird?!

ConfusedPixie · 08/08/2013 22:15

David Gemmel books? A bit of fantasy and creatures and legends, I need to reread his books. They all interlink with one another and the protagonist of one series will have a cameo in another and so on.

MrsBradfield · 08/08/2013 23:41

CorrineFoxworth great username, not that's a good series.

MrsBradfield · 08/08/2013 23:42

now

MilesAwayGirl · 09/08/2013 16:42

I came on to agree absolutely with Patrick Rothfuss 'The Name of the Wind' and suggest 'The Lies of Locke Lamorra' and 'Red Seas Under Red Skies' both by Scott Lynch. I love the witty, skilfully woven narratives.

CorrineFoxworth · 09/08/2013 16:47

Thank you Mrs Bradfield. I re-read it every decade or so. A lot went over my head on first reading when I was eleven and the books were hidden in my Mum's cupboard!

kungfupannda · 09/08/2013 18:23

Definitely Katherine Kerr's Deverry series - I started reading it at school and finished a couple of years ago when she wrote the final book.

Also agree with the Knife of Never Letting Go trilogy - a bit weird to start with but very readable.

PollyPlummer · 09/08/2013 21:45

Oooooh CorrineFoxworth A blast from the past, will have to nip up to my parents loft to see if I can find my old VA books.
BRF I have read John Connollys little book of lost things and enjoyed it so will definitely try the Charlie Parker series.

Garcia10 · 09/08/2013 22:59

Just remembered another fabulous series. Not sure if you can get it as an snook but Louise Cooper's Timemaster Triology is awesome as is her Indigo series.

Garcia10 · 09/08/2013 23:02

As an sook!!?? Bizarre autocorrect. I meant ebook. Doesn't seem to be on Amazon.

AlpacaLunchYoubringyourbooster · 09/08/2013 23:10

Phillip Pullmans Dark Materials

FondantNancy · 09/08/2013 23:12

I also recommend Pillars of the Earth and World Without End. I read them directly after GOT and they definitely scratched an itch.

UnexpectedStepmum · 09/08/2013 23:13

Lockie me too! Can't believe I hadn't heard of the sequel before. Thank you Lampwick - cracking nickname btw, hope you got rid of those ears.

UnexpectedStepmum · 09/08/2013 23:15

Oh and Squoosh YY to Shardlake, they are amazing, especially the last. The next is due soon!

saintava · 09/08/2013 23:32

Wheel of time - brilliant books, and 14 of them to keep you going

Brandon Sanderson - Mistborn books - just finishing these, very good

Sword of truth by Terry Goodkind, not read them all, just first 5, very good as well

Well of echoes by Ian Irvine

Shannara books by Terry Brooks

I loved all of these and got very caught up in them all Smile

saintava · 09/08/2013 23:34

I'll be looking up so e of the other suggestions on this thread. I love reading and am really hoping DC do too as they grow up, they already have 2 shelves of my bookcase full of their books Grin

Nassau · 10/08/2013 18:05

The Women/Men of the Otherworld series by Kelley Armstrong are good as well. Witches, demons, vampires, werewolves etc. Can be read out of sequence but better read in.
