Okay this is more a cry for reading suggestions similar to the "Game of thrones" series. I am almost at the end of book 5, I started watching and reading the series in may and have been completely drawn in. admittedly this happens to me a lot but I have never read a series with such long books, normally I would read min of one book a week.
I read a wide variety of books and thanks to the amazing tuebl site have downloaded dozens for free but none are in this genre. So please if any one else has any similar recommendations please share.Smile

Oh watching as I haven't found a replacement either (other than hunger games)

An old old series to try would be David Eddings belgarion stories.

SarahAndFuck · 05/08/2013 20:34

Perhaps Pillars of the Earth and World Without End by Ken Follett?

Turniptwirl · 05/08/2013 20:36

Not quite but try these:

Patrick Ness - trilogy started with The Knife of Never Letting Go

Garth Nix - another trilogy, starts with Sabriel

Lord of the Rings

Stephen Kings more epic books, It, The Stand, Under the Dome (the latter took me ages to get over the Simpsons movie connection and isn't as good as the other 2). Same sort of thing with the huge cast of characters and story lines all coming together, especially The Stand. Also his series, I forget the name and haven't read it myself though.

Turniptwirl · 05/08/2013 20:36

Oh and Gormenghast

PollyPlummer · 05/08/2013 20:40

I started reading them again.

I have heard the wheel of time series is good. Have got the first book going to start on it when I have read through again.

squoosh · 05/08/2013 20:40

Seems to be a question a lot of other people are asking on google!

I don't read fantasy myself so can't recommend but can sympathise with coming to the end of a book and having to leave that world.

Any other Shardlake fans? Not those would make an amazing series!

cacamilis · 05/08/2013 20:42

I actually have Hunger games on my kindle, it looks a good series but I am afraid I will be disappointed after the epic Game of thrones.
Re The Lord of the rings, I really could not "get" the films would the books be better? I don't think I would have got Game of thrones either if I hadn't read the books first. Does anyone else have trouble following series like this on tv, or an hour just a little dumb.Grin
Thanks a million for all the recommendation I am off to see what tuebl has to offer.

I have heard the Wheel of Time series is good too.

I would love to find an answer though ... I am sort of still pining for the series too (and I finished reading it a year ago)

lockie1983 · 05/08/2013 20:45

And yes about not "getting" it on tv without reading the book. A friend recommended me series 1 which I watched and thought it was ok. It was only after getting the books and rewatching the series that I got it

OddFrog · 05/08/2013 20:50

YY to wheel of time (Robert Jordan) and Belgariad (David Eddings). In a slightly different direction, have you tried the Black Magician trilogy (Trudi Canavan)?

cacamilis · 05/08/2013 20:52

Thanks squoosh, that's a good link. I love forums like this where other ladies read different genres. My female friends only read crime and chic lit. They don't understand my reading tastes, especially my zombie books. Sad

MrsNoodleHead · 05/08/2013 20:52

Robin Hobb's original Farseer trilogy. Such good storytelling.

lockie1983 · 05/08/2013 20:55

Ooh zombies Grin

Have you read The Passage? Not zombies ... But post apocalyptic vampires. Forget sparkly whimps pining over silly girls and think grotesque zombie like beasts !

DrHolmes · 05/08/2013 20:58

thefirstlaw.org/w/The_First_Law_Trilogy

I have only read "The Blade Itself" from this trilogy but it was very good and I think you will like it.
I know what you mean when you come to the end of a good book, it's so sad!

DrinaDancesInParis · 05/08/2013 20:58

YY Robin Hobb. Farseer and Liveship Trilogies are my favourites but she has lots. She's the closest to GoT in terms of scope, storytelling and awesomeness IMO.

Fairylea · 05/08/2013 20:59

Brandon Sanderson mistborn series - dh is an avid fantasy reader and he says these are the best he's read in a long time!

cacamilis · 05/08/2013 21:00

Thanks a million, so glad I posted, keep them coming. I love apocalypse books too so will be checking out the vampires also.Grin Grin

Yyy to Joe Abercrombie.

Caoilainn · 05/08/2013 21:08

I've just downloaded the first of Games of Thrones, not started it yet as I wasn't sure I was gaining to enjoy it (99p in kindle sale).
Will make a proper start tomorrow as it seems lots of you have enjoyed it.

I love series of books. Hunger Games were good, not read Sabriel but Garth Nix's days of the week saga I stole from DS and enjoyed. Also Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch is a good, though not an entirely interlinked series.

Broken: Girl in the Box by Robert J Crane and Shadowmagic by John Lenahan are cheapy enjoyable kindle reads.

Just found tuebl bit it's not workin for me! Any ideas?

SmiteYouWithThunderbolts · 05/08/2013 21:10

I second the recommendation for The Passage. Bloody good. Vampy but not in a Twishite sparkly way. Good and grippy.

cacamilis · 05/08/2013 21:12

What about tuebl is not working for you? Apparently it does have a fair bit of down time but I personally have never encountered it. The search function can be difficult you need correct spelling and you put authors surname in first, sometimes you need to do a Google search of tuebl.ca and book and author name.
Have you downloaded the caliber app to convert books?

OP posts:
Williammarshallsmissus · 05/08/2013 21:12

YABVU using Tuebl - if you illegally download books the authors don't get paid, so they won't be able to afford to write anymore of those books you are so enjoying.

lockie1983 · 05/08/2013 21:13

DrHolmes It is sad, I sort of grieve the end of a good book. Kindle makes it worse as sometimes the end just creeps up on you.

caoilainn Game of Thrones is a bit of a grower so hang in there ! Ooh and check out series 1 once you are a GOOD way into book 2 :/)

lockie1983 · 05/08/2013 21:14

Smite have you read The Twelve too? Am just getting into it, so far so good.

CSIJanner · 05/08/2013 21:19

Stephen Donaldson -Thomas Covenant
Robert Jordan - Wheel of Time
Ursula Le Guin - Earthsea
Anne McCaffery - Pern saga
Tad Williams - The Dragonbone chair (I've bought this three times!)
David & Leigh Eddings - The Belgariad and Malloreon

Have fun! Am signing off to find a book Grin
