Okay this is more a cry for reading suggestions similar to the "Game of thrones" series. I am almost at the end of book 5, I started watching and reading the series in may and have been completely drawn in. admittedly this happens to me a lot but I have never read a series with such long books, normally I would read min of one book a week.
I read a wide variety of books and thanks to the amazing tuebl site have downloaded dozens for free but none are in this genre. So please if any one else has any similar recommendations please share.Smile

Wheel of Time is great for the first 6 or so books. The rest are somewhat disappointing particularly the last one. I was devastated that I had waited nearly 20 years of my life to reach a very disappointing conclusion.

Katherine Kerr's Deverry Cycle series of books are great of which there are now 15 books so that should keep you going for some time.

Also anything by Robin Hobb, particularly the Farseer Triology.

To the poster who suggested David Edding's Belgariad - I started reading these at the age of 13 and to be honest that it is the right age. On re-reading when I was older the books seemed quite childish and poorly written.

Miniph · 05/08/2013 21:27

I'd 2nd Janner's list but add:

Raymond E. Feist - Riftwars Series

(I'm just re-reading Game of Thrones, I hate it when I run out of books in a series I enjoy)

If you fancied something a bit different, slightly more sci-fi then I'd also sneak:

Kevin J Anderson - Saga of the Seven Suns

in to the list.

Williammarshallmissus, you are misinformed tuebl is a legal site, check it out if you don't believe me. It also has a take down policy where authors can remove their books if they wish. There are loads of links and info regarding this matter if you are interested in learning more.
For me personally I am saving some money downloading from tuebl but the upside is that I am now reading books by authors I had never previously heard of and genres that I had not previously considered. So when one of these authors releases a new book, it won't be available on tuebl for a while so I buy it from amazon for my kindle.

lockie I am sad for days and if I can't get into the next book I get so annoyed! Agree with the kindle thing. Even if it tells you how many pages you've read and how long you have left its still unexpected sometimes. I'm reading "out stealing horses" by Per Petterson at the moment. So far so good :)

DontPanicMrMannering · 05/08/2013 21:33

Oh no Garcia really? Was just considering digging them out of the garage bookcase, might leave them there to sadly gather dust then so as not to ruin them iyswim!

What about The Redemption Of Althalus? Always wanted to read that one again but it is oddly linked to an emotional time of life, perhaps I should leave it there......

muppetthecow · 05/08/2013 21:34

Another vote for Wheel of Time and Robin Hobb's Farseer trilogy (and the others set in that world- I love them all!). The first book of WoT takes a while to get going, but once it does it's a bit addictive!

ThePortlyPinUp · 05/08/2013 21:38

I loved David Eddings and David Gemmel books, our DD2 is named Elana after the Princess Ehlana in the Sparhawk books :)

I'm now finishing GoT book 5 part 2 and I think I'm going to end up re reading them all as I've loved them so much, I was very dismissive when Dp first started watching it on TV but the books really got me into it.

Williammarshallsmissus · 05/08/2013 21:39

Cacamilis Actually there are many books that have been uploaded to that site without permission of the author or the publishers, and while some people may be discovering new authors, the state of publishing due to sites like this mean less new authors will be able to make a living at it.
TUEBL is legal IF the user submitted material is a but if it breaches copyright without permission then it isn't.

muppetthecow · 05/08/2013 21:41

panic DH essentially refused to move in with me unless I read the redemption of Althalus. Apparently he couldn't contemplate a future with someone who didn't like it Grin he also wanted to name ds Emmy if he'd been a girl

Garcia10 · 05/08/2013 21:43

Dontpanic - I would leave them. I don't know about you but they were the books that first got me into fantasy writing and whilst it was comforting to reconnect with Polgara, Garion, Silk etc it was a bit disappointing too.

I've just remembered The Mists of Avalon (don't know how I forgot it) by Marion Zimmer Bradley. It is one of my most favourite books of all time. I have the paperback version and have had to Sellotape the front cover back on. The Firebrand by the same author is also excellent.

ExitPursuedByABear · 05/08/2013 21:43

.

MrsBradfield · 05/08/2013 21:47

Ian irvines view from the mirror quartet is very good. Also stephen kings dark tower series.

GoldiChops · 05/08/2013 21:48

Raymond E Feist- Magician. My favourite book ever, and the series just never stops- but broken up, trilogies and sets of four. The 3 empire books are amazing!

I'm the same, I mourn for the characters and the world they live in at the end of a series. TV too, I'm still not over Firefly! I'd really recommend going to the YA/teen section of the library- so many good sci-fi and fantasy books, end of the world, dystopia type books out there now.

PrettyKitty1986 · 05/08/2013 21:50

The Hunger Games Trilogy. Wonderful, wonderful books, the best I've read for ages.

Trills · 05/08/2013 21:51

There are 14 (very large) books to the Wheel of Time series.

Start here

The series has been completed too.

Trills · 05/08/2013 21:54

I disagree with "anything by Robin Hobb".

The Assassin books are good. Fool books are great. Liveship books good.

But the Soldier Son books were dreadful, and what I've read of the Rain Wild ones were a it meh.

Funghoul · 05/08/2013 21:58

If you like zombies then Mira Grant has a trilogy, first book is called feed. There's also a very short ebook that ties in. I found it to be a different take on zombies, a more scientific approach and have read this books over and over.

Caoilainn · 05/08/2013 21:59

cacamilis just tried again and I can get on it! Grin only used Amazon til now but someone posted about it the other day and the site was down. What is the calibre app?

Looking forward to spending ages looking at amazing books Grin

lockie I'm on 3% and its annoying me! I will persevere though!

miniph I remember Kevin J Anderson from X Files books many moons ago, assuming it is the same author, did enjoy reading his books.

nosleeptilever · 05/08/2013 22:09

Anything by Guy Gavriel-Kay. Tigana especially.

muppetthecow · 05/08/2013 22:12

Trills weren't the Soldier Son books awful! I actually didn't finish them, and I'm one of those people who will usually plough on to the bitter end. I have to say, I did enjoy the Rain Wild ones though Smile

cacamilis · 05/08/2013 22:15

William I am not interest in getting into a debate on this matter, its not as simple as you have stated as you failed to mention public domain, anyway as I said that's me done on this topic, I am only interested in discussing new reads which may make me VU but I can live with that. ;-)

Re the calibre app you need to download this onto your computer to convert books from e-pub to mobi file which is kindle friendly. It sounds a bit tech but its easy do a you-tube search and it will show you how.

I think I have read those zombie books by Mira Grant, I went through an almighty stage of zombie reading last year and think I managed to buy the majority of promising ones amazon had to offer. One of my favourite zombie series is "Zombie fallout" by Mark Tufo but there are loads I enjoyed. Area 187 by Eric Lowther was excellent am eagerly awaiting the sequel which I will buy the day it finally comes out.
If anyone wants any more zombie recommendations just ask and I will go through my library in amazon and recommend the ones I most enjoyed.

The passage and the twelve very good, I couldn't put them down. The third one is due next year apparently.

Garcia10 · 05/08/2013 22:26

I concede - The Solider Son Trilogy by Robin Hobb was pretty awful. I think I blocked it from my mind Smile. I thought the Rain Wild Chronicles were worth reading.

If Arthurian stories are of interest Stephen Lawhead's Pendragon Cycle are a good example of the genre.

A new series which I'm enjoying is Patrick Rothfuss' Kingkiller Chronicle. The first two books have been published with the third expected in 2014. Just seen that the books have been optioned by Fox - not sure if that is a good or bad thing.

Williammarshallsmissus · 05/08/2013 22:28

Cacamilis - My husband's novels are on there illegally with no permission from him or his publishers and Tuebl are, and have been ignoring the take down notices. It's not public domain just because someone has the bought the book and has decided piracy isn't stealing.
Another vote for Ken Follett's - game of thrones without the magic and for Old School fantasy Melanie Rawn's dragon prince trilogy but pay for them please :-)

Garcia10 · 05/08/2013 22:29

Agree with Doshusallie that Justin Cronin's The Passage Trilogy is very engaging but would argue whether they are the same genre as GoT, WoT, Robin Hobb etc. More SF than fantasy.
