Kind of AIBU/WWYD - Holiday club letting 5 yr olds watch PG films

Just that really. My 5 yr old DS came home from his holiday club today quoting Simpsons the Movie, and when asked he said they were allowed to watch the DVD today. I am a little concerned that we weren't asked if it were ok for him to watch a PG film whilst in their care. I don't think I would have let him watch it at home.

What do you think/WWYD? Am I being a bit precious?

I don't think you're being precious, my kids are a lot older than yours now, and they'd not have been watching The Simpsons at 5. I think I'd be having a word, surely there are enough U films in the world!

Well there's no swearing or sex that I am aware of, in The Simpsons.

Can you specify what you think shouldn't be shown?

YABU. PG films are usually ok for children of that age. Given the strict rules about staffing I would hazard a guess that there are staff on hand to deal with any inappropriate material (though I highly doubt there would be any in a PG).

I'd be annoyed that they didn't ask me, but I wouldn't mind them watching the Simpsons.
Our holiday club got pulled up by Ofsted for letting kids play age restricted video games with parental permission.

YANBU. Holiday club should be checking with parents before showing a PG film to 5 year olds. And of all the PG films around I'd have thought they could have found something more suitable than the Simpsons.

I wouldn't be happy with letting them watch the Simpsons, can you check and see what ones they are planning on playing?

See, the website I looked at recommended PG films for age 8 and over. I don't normally let DS watch PG unless I am sure its ok. I sometimes watch the Simpsons when I am at the gym to pass the time on the treadmill - I thought it had a bit of adult humour. And was a little violent... Perhaps I am a bit over the top here lol!

I used to work in an After School Club and would put a Dvd for the last half hour or so if raining and would only ever put a U on. YANBU. PG should be for the parent to decide on the specific films not the club.

I was worried that the kids at the club were a bit older than DS - Mostly 7-10 with some days there being 4,5 and 6 yr olds. Today was spectacularly rainy and mostly older kids. So I suppose rather than have them all driven wild by staying indoors, they thought it best to put a DVD on.

How on earth do I bring this up without sounding petty? The woman who runs it can be a little 'overbearing' so I imagine her reaction will not be great to any criticism. Oh bugger. I hate confrontation.

YABU. If you are that worried find alternative care, they probably chose the best dvd for all the age groups there. PFB by any chance?

Last year I was asked for permission from my ds's school to let him watch a PG film, and he's in Y6. I can't remember the film, but it definitely wasn't one that would have made me think twice about allowing him to watch it at 11 years old.

The school I work in will only show films with a U rating during wet playtimes, so I just assumed that it was standard to get parental permission about PG films.

The Simpsons does have a lot of adult humour it in - it goes right over kids heads.

You chose this holiday programme knowing there were older kids there, so therefore there would have to be a balance - you can't expect them to all want to watch A Turtles Tale or Fireman Sam.

You will sound petty if you bring it up - really, there's no need, it's The Simpsons not Cloverfield.

Toy story is a PG would u have objected to that?

Oh! Ha! No, I don't think I am trying to project PFB. I just wish she had asked about PG films. I could understand if I had complained about him being fed regular white bread rather than organic seeded batch bread, or crisps and juice instead of carrot batons and mineral water!

It's not as if I think he has been scarred for life, I just feel a bit uneasy that he has been watching something that I wouldn't normally let him without watching myself first.

I have watched Toy Story with him before, so wouldn't have a problem with that. But then I don't think it contains as much adult humour as Simpsons. I suppose I just see it as more of an older kids movie.

The Simpsons Movie has Homer Simpson sticking his middle fingers up, and Bart skateboards nude and you see his penis through a hedge. There are also sex references in the film. My 8 year old brother watched it and kept on saying 'bountiful penis' over and over, so no, it doesn't go over kids heads. YANBU

Pixar PG and Simpsons PG are quite different things, like the most Pixar films would have is 'mild peril' or 'mild threat.' I think The Simpsons film should be a 12+ or scrapped because it was shit

I used to teach and school policy in every school I ever taught in was we could only show kids U films without out signed permission slips. Toy story is great but if it is PG then the patents needed to approve it for their child. I did not think that was unreasonable I thought it was respectful of the families.

When DD (11) had a sleep over in school they were not allowed to take any PG cert films to watch, had to be U as the teachers said they could not show a PG without getting permission from every parent for every film. I assumed this would be the case with any childcare setting.
