The Duke and Duchess gave their occupation as prince and princess of the United Kingdom on the birth certificate register

Thought their occupation was helicopter rescue pilot and housewife

"Princess of England" as an "Occupation" is ridiculous. The father's occupation is an RAF helicopter pilot. Prince, isn't an occupation.

These are titles not occupations. Or have I got this wrong?

Saved her putting 'avoided' in the occupation box.

If it were my job I would write it graffiti style on bus stops and say things like "fuck off I'm a princess" so can't say I blame them.

It is a big deal because she is the first royal mother to have an occupation in that box, it was in the paper today. Diana had nothing in that box.

It is a cool job, I want it. Grin

But how come she isn't Princess Catherine then like Diana was known as Princess?

George's sirname is Cambridge, they had a choice. Officially William's is Mountbatten-Windsor as is Harry's but they both go by William Wales and Captain Wales plus William is also Duke of Cambridge.

And the other day in the paper got me thinking so hopefully someone can shed some light for me, Charles children are Prince's William and Harry, Andrew's children are Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, Edwards are Lady Louise and Viscount James and Anne's are just plain old Phillip and Zara. Why aren't they all Prince and Princesses as that's what one of their parents are?

'Likewise, Kate is a Princess currently on maternity leave.'

But coming out of hospital and being photographed by hundreds of press was a Princess job. If she has been made to work while on maternity leave she needs to complain to HR.
Unless it was one of her keeping-in-touch days?

I thought it was a bit off that they had "Hrh Prince" before his name, because that definitely is a title.

Have done a fair bit of family tree stuff in past year and it is not uncommon in the past to have "gentleman" as the occupation on a census of birth certificate.

My DS aged 2 has a birth certificate beautifully written with fountain pen, think it depends where you live.

Crapbag.

I may not explain this very well but its to do with whose who and how they came about.

Diana was not ever officially princess Diana she was Diana princess of xyz only daughters of kings and some daughters born to certain children of the monarch are formally princess such and such,

Its why none of the other royal children apart from Beatrice and whats her face. Edward and Sophie's children are not.

So a royal born Freda would be either princess Freda or Freda princess of slough depending on who her parents are.

Crapbag - think they can chose the titles. I am sure I remember something about Prince Edward not wanting his children titled as Prince and Princess.

And didn't Anne refuse any titles whatsoever for Philip and Zara? They could have been HRH's but she said no.

SofiaVagueara, their surname is NOT Windsor! The family name is but their surname, should they ever need one, is Mountbatten-Windsor.

"For the most part, members of the Royal Family who are entitled to the style and dignity of HRH Prince or Princess do not need a surname, but if at any time any of them do need a surname (such as upon marriage), that surname is Mountbatten-Windsor."

Princess Anne decided that her children should not have the HRH title or Prince / princess (by the way it's Peter and Zara). It was up to the parents how their children should be addressed.

Crapbag -

Someone said on another thread that you are only Prince X if you are the son/daughter of a reigning monarch or the child of the two first in line to the throne. So William and Harry get Prince. Beatrice and Eugenie got princess. Edward's kids aren't - but have other titles.

Anne's kids have a commoner father so didn't get a title from him. The Queen could have granted them titles, but Anne didn't want her to.

The Queen signed a special thingy to make Prince George Prince George, as traditionally he wouldn't have been. Presumably because it would have been historically very unusual to have a reigning monarch and three heirs alive at the same time.

Diana was never Princess Diana. She was HRH Diana Princess of Wales. As is Camilla, though she never uses it for obvious reasons.

I think Zara and Phillip have no title because Princess Anne specifically asked that they not have. Quite sensible I think, unlike Prince Andrew and his (perhaps) former partner.

Prince William and Harry are princes because they are children of the son of the monarch.

Princess Beatrice and Eugenie are princesses for the same reason.

Captain Mark Philips refused a title on marrying Princess Anne as they decided that their children would not be titled. It was expected that he would have become the Duke or Earl of somewhere and that their children would become Lord and Lady.

Prince Edward's children, as children of a son of the monarch, would normally be HRH Prince and HRH Princess but it was decided that they would be styled as the children of an Earl and not bear HRH.

Prince George would always have been Prince George. The reason for the letters patent was that only the eldest son of the eldest son of the eldest son would be Prince X, and other children would be Lord or Lady, so if Kate had had a girl, she would otherwise have become Lady X. The Queen issued new rules so that, had they had a girl, she would have been Princess X of Cambridge.

Harry's children, given the rules at present as long as the Queen lives, would be Lord and Lady. This, of course, will change when Prince Charles becomes King.

Scrap the last line if she married in she would be Freda princess of slough.

I know there were some changes made last year but before that it was only male line born daughters and granddaughters who got the princess or prince xyz and I can't remember exactly why but it matters which prince your dad is,and I think exceptions are always made for the prince who is deamed to have the highest princy title

No! In fact it was just The Queen.

Also, Diana was never HRH Diana, Princess of Wales.

She became HRH The Princess of Wales on marriage and then only became Diana, Princess of Wales, when she and Charles divorced as is the style for the former wives of peers etc.

And according to wiki, the Queen also announced on his wedding that Edward will become the Duke of Edinburgh once both Philip dies, and Charles suceeds. So he will be a duke eventually.

Wasn't it that only the children of princes got to be princes or princesses? But Edward declined that for his two and just went with the courtesy title which Anne could also have had but decided not to?

The birth certificate is as it is because it's in a particular royal register isn't it? I noticed it was numer 207 or something like that - wonder who was number 1!
