To rant about my children's now ruined brand new clothes?

I know I am BU but I am so pissed off I don't care.

My parents took my children camping at their expense for two weeks. This is awesome and I am incredibly lucky to have such a close and supportive family.

As the weather was hot and they've grown since last summer, I had gave them their holiday clothes for our holiday this year.

My parents have allowed them to go a play park in their brand, spanking new white shorts. They have not soaked the resulting stains as soon as they occurred, they've been through the wash twice with surf, vanish in wash and vanish spray on stain remover, nothing has touched it, they're now soaking in the sink with half water, half vanish. They're obviously going top need replacing Angry

I know I am lucky that my kids got a free holiday and in the grand scheme of things they're only shorts, but I am so fucking annoyed that no-one thought to ask them to change into more suitable clothing for going to the park in the mud. They'd only worn the shorts once.

White Shorts and Camping Grin[grin}Grin[grin}GrinGrin

Seriously what were you thinking? Of course the clothes were stained - they were living in a tent!

D0oinMeCleanin · 02/08/2013 16:33

The play suits both have splotchy purple/indigo marks all over them.

The shorts were clearly a 'dressy' outfit for evenings, not for playing in the park in.

Lot of fuss for 2 pairs of shorts (I think it's just 2?). What did they cost to buy new?

2468BONJOVI · 02/08/2013 16:34

Next time your daughters go away without you, you will have to send a proper lady's maid. this problem arose because you were trying to stint on untrained staff. If you had sent their usual gel, she would have administered their clothes properly and would have laid out their "going to the pub in summer evenings" shorts on the bed at 8pm, and removed them when they came back. She would also have hand washed their "cerise play suits"

dreamofwhitehorses · 02/08/2013 16:34

I know the OP is a regular, and generally a reasonable poster, but I have the absolute rage over this! 14yrs, and all I've had is two school trips and a weekend my brother had them last year. 'I'm very grateful but...' is not nearly enough of an acknowledgement of how bloody lucky you are to have the support of family like this.

StayAwayFromTheEdge · 02/08/2013 16:34

Smiley fail Grin

We camp every year - dark clothes that we don't mind getting ruined. If it isn't too hot the children are permanently in waterproof trousers to protect what is underneath.

Sirzy · 02/08/2013 16:35

Do people really get dressed up in the evenings when camping?

jacksgrannie · 02/08/2013 16:35

Grandma's perspective here. Be very very careful OP. You are coming across as very spoilt and ungrateful. For goodness sake, the children can still wear the clothes can't they? Are you going to some chic French hotel inhabited by the Beckhams and they need to fit in? I pity your poor parents (probably terrified you are going to "say something"). Totally your own fault for sending them camping with inappropriate clothes.

StayAwayFromTheEdge · 02/08/2013 16:36

You do not need dressy clothes on a campsite - Did your parents ever take you camping? With the best will in the world your clothes get dirty.

D0oinMeCleanin · 02/08/2013 16:36

I assumed so Sirzy, but I've never been camping. I always have to stay home to look after the aforementioned aggressive dog and exotic birds.

theoriginalandbestrookie · 02/08/2013 16:37

The only time I have been camping I ended up wearing the same clothes for the 3 nights we were there. I felt so permanently dirty despite showering, that it seemed a waste to bother changing.

Perhaps my trip would have been enhanced with a special outfit for the campsite disco, who knows.

blueballoon79 · 02/08/2013 16:37

YABVVVVVU!

I'm a single mum to two DC's both with a disability and so far this summer I'm incredibly grateful to my parents for babysitting for me for 2 nights.

That is all, 2 nights and I'm thankful they did it because I got a much needed break and let's face it, they didn't have to bother at all!

If I'd packed two pairs of unsuitable coloured shorts which had both got ruined I would think it well worth the cost of two nights break!

Your parents have taken your children away for two whole weeks and paid for them and all you can do is whine and moan about two pairs of shorts!

You sound unbelievably spoilt and ungrateful. Awful.

cansu · 02/08/2013 16:37

If you sent really expensive clothes then its kind of your fault. If they are cheapish clothes then balanced against the fact that your kids have had a free holiday and you have had two weeks rest from looking after them then this is very good value. Tbh if someone offered to take care of my ds for two weeks for free and all it cost me was a few new clothes I wold be ecstatic. To enable you to get a bit of perspective for my ds who is severely disabled to have a holiday of seven days costs 2500 pounds of which I have had to pay 1000 pounds.

Will get some Shout. I don't think we have a Sainsbury's but I am sure my mum works near one, I'll ask her to call in and get me some.

lljkk · 02/08/2013 16:42

I think Doonme is getting unfair flack (but then, you should have known better & posted your vent in Chat not AIBU).

Come on Doonme, tell us how much in total did you pay for the ruined items?
Even if it was 30p each, if I liked them, I'd be peeved about them all being ruined.

How old are the children, too?

oscarwilde · 02/08/2013 16:42

Have you got any Napisan lurking in the back of the cleaning cupboard? Might salvage the pink shorts.

YABU and you know it, however I can appreciate your irritation at the ruined clothes and people not using their heads to pick something appropriate for the venue/occasion.

The playsuits ? Have they got stains from the denim? Sending clothes that have not been washed before/run in the wash/need special washing - lesson learned I think.

Are you going overseas for your holiday? You'll be able to buy summer clothes there if everywhere in the UK is sold out.

fromparistoberlin · 02/08/2013 16:42

ARE YOU FOR REAL

i actually think you are, especially with that username!!!!!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/08/2013 16:42

'Hi mum. I know you've already taken the kids off my hands for a fortnight and tried to wash their clothes etc, but I'm too busy cursing you on an online thread to go to Sainsbury's, so please will you go for me, whilst I carry on moaning about you for a while. Oh, perhaps you could pick up some white shorts and several expensive cerise playsuits whilst you're there, too?'

Sorry OP - I know that you are usually completely sane on here, but this thread is so hard to take seriously.

I think the ruining of the cerise play suits is almost certainly a blessing in disguise. In much the same way it was if your parents wouldn't buy you a shell suit in the early 90s....

Tuppenceinred · 02/08/2013 16:43

You're being really silly op. Just go to Primark, Matalan or EBay and get some cheap shorts. Or, just dye the stained white ones a dark more sensible colour. As for the playsuits... get over it, honestly.
If you moan about any of this, or make passive-aggressive "jokey" comments to anyone you're being an ungrateful mare.

I think your children have had a great time, playing happily without you hovering over them worrying about special and expensive outfits being worn at the wrong time or getting dirty. Next time buy cheaper and chill.
Grin

jacks365 · 02/08/2013 16:43

Rewash in the machine but instead of using fabric softner use lemon juice instead then dry in sunlight. I can't promise but I find it effective for most stains. I've camped with the dc for years and they literally lived in skorts from tammy. I never bother with posher clothes.

dexter73 · 02/08/2013 16:44

I will have to say something if I cannot save the play suits I'm afraid.
I'm voting this for MN quote of the week Grin!!
Thanks for this thread - it has really made me laugh!
