I want to apply for a job that I know I would be good at but have no formal training for. Am I mad?

It's a catering job at a residential home, just cooking proper home-cooked meals for 22 residents and baking cakes/pastries.

Not blowing my own trumpet, but I am a good cook and can make naice cakes. I would love to work in a job with food and this one would be perfect for me... at the bottom of my street, nice hours that fit in with school runs... but I have no formal experience. The job description says previous experience preferred and baking experience essential. Well, I have baked all sorts of cakes but not in a professional capacity.

I haven't applied for a job in over ten years and feel a bit out of my depth, pathetic as it sounds. Do you think it's even worth me applying?!

Excellent news! Are they paying you for the trial?

SwedishEdith · 07/08/2013 15:14

Excellent! Well done - I'm sure it's in the bag Flowers

MikeOxard · 07/08/2013 15:23

Yay, well done! :D x

DiaryOfAWimpyMum · 07/08/2013 15:26

Well done OP, it sounds like a great job!!

It sounds more like you're interviewing them on Saturday, best of luck.

claudedebussy · 07/08/2013 15:26

oh wow!!! congratulations!

ParsingFancy · 07/08/2013 15:32

Oh I'm so pleased for you, Twatters! Looks like you could get your cafe after all, but with a captive audience.Grin

Onetwothreeoops · 07/08/2013 15:37

So it's yours if you want it then!

Congratulations!

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 07/08/2013 15:48

Well done!! That's great news!

Dejected · 07/08/2013 15:57

Fantastic! Good luck for Saturday!

MarmaladeTwatkins · 07/08/2013 16:02

Thanks everyone Flowers

They were talking about how to pay me for the trial and they said something about adding it on as overtime on the week I started. If they don't pay me, I'll make up the amount by carrying out as much baking equipment as I can carry Wink

Wonderful news - keep us posted!

ChippingInHopHopHop · 07/08/2013 21:02

Well done you Flowers :)

So excited for you!!

(You can find threads you started hidden under 'Threads I started' Grin Wink)

Lomaamina · 07/08/2013 21:26

I'm so glad to hear they mentioned pay. That sounds like they a) mean business and b) that they're business-like, if you see what I mean

SarahAndFuck · 08/08/2013 00:07

Well done and good luck again.

Not that it sounds like you need it Smile

SarahAndFuck · 08/08/2013 00:09

Oh, and has the thread about the wedding and the crap colleagues dropped off your list? I wrote a poem and everything on that one and it was so bad I killed the thread Grin

LeftyLucy · 08/08/2013 03:08

Excellent. Congratulations! I hope you do like it.

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 08/08/2013 03:22

Yay!

Tittypulumpcious · 08/08/2013 03:25

This is lovely news, congratulations' Wine

ZillionChocolate · 08/08/2013 07:01

Yay!

Helenagrace · 08/08/2013 07:08

De-lurking to say congratulations!

Also to say you inspired me OP. I have been following your thread and I saw a job advertised that was a much higher grade than I was planning to look for (it's one below board level - the level I was at pre-DCs 12 years ago). Inspired by you I put in a last minute application and I have an interview next week!

Thank you!

Lomaamina · 08/08/2013 07:35

helenagrace assuming OP doesn't mind the digression: good luck with the interview! I bet you're amply qualified. It's a well known fact in my field (academia) that men put themselves up early for promotion and women do so late...

MarmaladeTwatkins · 08/08/2013 11:23

Sarah, ha ha ha! Did you kill the thread?! I will go and find it now Grin

Helena, that's brilliant! Wishing you lots of luck with the interview. Let us know how you get on.

Flowers

Thanks everyone for encouraging me to apply. I honestly wouldn't have done it if you lot hadn't have persuaded me to. Even just getting a second interview has made me feel more confident in myself because I've managed that off the back of just being me and not by a list of qualifications. The only thing I am kicking myself for now is all of the jobs I have liked the look of over the years and not applied for because I've thought 'No way would I get it.' So thanks, really. Flowers Wine :)

So pleased for you. You are right- we can all undervalue ourselves, and look at the formal qualifications we don't have, rather than focus on the skills and qualities we do have. Remember- you are there because you deserve to be!

Lucky old folk, they will get some stunning cooking now.... Hw old do you have to be before you can move in?

SarahAndFuck · 08/08/2013 12:17

I think it died a slow death after my post yes, Grin because I never saw it again after that, but I really wanted to know what the annoying colleagues did in the end.

MarmaladeTwatkins · 08/08/2013 12:21

Strangely, they didn't do anything after my snippy reply. Grin
