I want to apply for a job that I know I would be good at but have no formal training for. Am I mad?

It's a catering job at a residential home, just cooking proper home-cooked meals for 22 residents and baking cakes/pastries.

Not blowing my own trumpet, but I am a good cook and can make naice cakes. I would love to work in a job with food and this one would be perfect for me... at the bottom of my street, nice hours that fit in with school runs... but I have no formal experience. The job description says previous experience preferred and baking experience essential. Well, I have baked all sorts of cakes but not in a professional capacity.

I haven't applied for a job in over ten years and feel a bit out of my depth, pathetic as it sounds. Do you think it's even worth me applying?!

Good luck both of you!!

I'm so glad you went for it and the interview was a success. How funny that you knew the interviewer already Grin I really hope you get it - it does sound as if you will.

Lomaamina · 02/08/2013 14:36

Good luck! sounds promising. I agree with the others that you shouldn't be shy about asking for an alternative time for childcare, but then make it clear that you will be able to make regular arrangements for this in the even that you get the job.

garlicagain · 02/08/2013 15:06

Congrats! I knew it :) We all did! Agree about rescheduling Tuesday if you can't make it. Have a nice weekend Grin

EvaBeaversProtege · 02/08/2013 17:24

Oh well done!!!

Is childcare going to be a problem for you if you get the job or is it just this Tuesday?

LizzieVereker · 02/08/2013 17:45

Oh well done, that took guts! Fingers crossed for Tuesday. I really want a bakewell tart now, BTW.

phantomnamechanger · 02/08/2013 17:59

well done marmalade!! (any chance interview lady is a MNer?)

as for taking over the school kitchen, as far as I know the contract with the catering firm the LEA were using was up for renewal, but schools were not obliged to opt in and could make their own arrangements - was about the same time as Jamie Olivers campaign - 2 mums proposed healthier, locally sourced meals and were given a chance! Instead of frozen dinosaur shaped nuggets etc, they have proper food eg chilli, Chinese beef, fish pie, roast dinner, pasta bakes, and a help-yourself fresh salad bar in addition to the choice of hot veg every day.

BoundandRebound · 02/08/2013 22:55

Congrats

Jinsei · 03/08/2013 08:11

YouStayClassySanDiego · 07/08/2013 07:33

Did you get it?

MarmaladeTwatkins · 07/08/2013 09:29

Hi everyone!

Sorry, I couldn't find the thread as it dropped off my Threads I'm On list.

So, went back yesterday for a second interview and they want to trial me on Saturday. The manager said she wants to give me the job but she wants to make sure that I like it first. She said that they won't throw me in at the deep end but let me do a few weeks with another cook (who will be leaving when I start, if I get it) to get the hang of things.

So haven't found out for definite yet but it's looking good! Grin Flowers
