I want to apply for a job that I know I would be good at but have no formal training for. Am I mad?

It's a catering job at a residential home, just cooking proper home-cooked meals for 22 residents and baking cakes/pastries.

Not blowing my own trumpet, but I am a good cook and can make naice cakes. I would love to work in a job with food and this one would be perfect for me... at the bottom of my street, nice hours that fit in with school runs... but I have no formal experience. The job description says previous experience preferred and baking experience essential. Well, I have baked all sorts of cakes but not in a professional capacity.

I haven't applied for a job in over ten years and feel a bit out of my depth, pathetic as it sounds. Do you think it's even worth me applying?!

Good luck this morning. If you have any cake left over you could send it to me

TerraNotSoFirma · 02/08/2013 09:49

< drums fingers impatiently waiting for news>

MarmaladeTwatkins · 02/08/2013 11:11

Oh thank you everyone!

Just got back! I know the woman who interviewed me as she used to run the toddler group I used to take ds to! It was very informal, just told me what type of food I'd be asked to cook and about hours/wages etc. She wants me back on Tuesday but I am struggling for childcare, agggghhhhh!

She has to feed back to the owner of the Home and she has the most input in deciding who will get it, she tipped me the wink when she said it Grin

Bakewell tart went down well, the carers were all clucking over me! Ha ha!

LeGavrOrf · 02/08/2013 11:26

Oh that sounds brilliant, well done.

Could DH take a morning leave to look after your son? I hope you can find childcare.

It all sounds very promising.

Tabliope · 02/08/2013 11:32

That sounds great. I think/hope it's in the bag.

Peacocklady · 02/08/2013 11:34

Been lurking and thinking of you! Well done, came back to check how you got on, hurray! Let us know when it's in the bag!

ChippingInHopHopHop · 02/08/2013 11:35

Well done you :) Grin

I hope you can find childcare for Tuesday. I'd offer, but I'm working and can't shift the day (minor consideration being I don't know where you live exactly, but really, nowhere in the UK is that far away Grin).

RandallPinkFloyd · 02/08/2013 11:40

Huzzah! That all sounds fab Smile

magimedi · 02/08/2013 12:20

Fantastic news - hope you can get things sorted for Tuesday.

springytotty · 02/08/2013 12:34

oh that's GREAT Smile Smile

Just a thought: you could gird your loins and say Tuesday doesn't suit you as you have prior engagements (shows you are loyal and have integrity!), could another day be arranged.

Start as you mean to go on....

Blardy well done you blardy amazing woman Flowers

ListWriter · 02/08/2013 12:50

Well done! Sounds very promising...

MoreThanWords · 02/08/2013 13:34

Is there a childrens centre nearby that would have childminder details?

You will need a food hygiene certificate for a start as you would be cooking for vulnerable people (I am a chef although I don't do it any more)

If they say experience and qualifications required, it's for a reason.

colourmehappytheresasofainhere · 02/08/2013 13:57

Oh dear Nigel that was a bit of a dampener!! Well done twatkins :-)

OhDearNigel · 02/08/2013 14:01

Sorry !!! Serves me right for not reading the thread. I thought the OP had said experience was required.

Well done OP, from the hours it looks like you won't have to worry about menu planning or budgeting, just cooking. I'm guessing there's a head cook. Good luck :)

LeGavrOrf · 02/08/2013 14:07

Haha at 'gird your loins'

Picturepuncture · 02/08/2013 14:08

Well done OP! Good luck Tuesday Smile

SarahAndFuck · 02/08/2013 14:10

Well done, and good luck for Tuesday xx
